What didn't you like about the crane?

Largest technic set ever, and all it did was extend and retract a boom and drop a hook.

Pneumatics worse than useless.

1 nonstandard motor that is not easily used anywhere else.

VERY repetitive build on the chassis, which was 60% of the model. Cherry picker alt model used the same chassis.

no new techniques, no new ideas, just a big yellow beast that sat on my shelf for about a year and then went back into the box.

The best thing about it was the colour: pure yellow (which I LOVED!), and it did use a good number of good old fashioned technic bricks, along with the liftarms. And NO farings! yay!

Compare it to the sets from 10 years ago, which did so much more, with 1/4 the parts.

You make some fair points;

Largest technic set ever, and all it did was extend and retract a boom and drop a hook.

Well, I liked the stablisers and the steering, and the boom was in three parts (even though much of the length is wasted) and I thought the transmission was well designed.

Pneumatics worse than useless.

Arguably true. It needs at least another two cylinders.

1 nonstandard motor that is not easily used anywhere else.

I agree here completely. I have tried to integrate one in the crane to propell it, but I can't find a way to do it neatly. (I have two as mine had gear problems and Lego sent 2 replacements.) I have tried to use it in other MOCs but it is just too oddly shaped. I look forward to the new more compact motors.

VERY repetitive build on the chassis, which was 60% of the model. Cherry picker alt model used the same chassis.

I agree here as well. I didn't bother making the alt model.

no new techniques, no new ideas, just a big yellow beast that sat on my shelf for about a year and then went back into the box.

Isn't this the first time a transmission has been used to allow one motor to act as two? Eitherway, I do largely agree.

I don't like the fairings much either, and I definently agree that the older sets had less parts and more functions. I blame studless designs as many of the parts are just pins. I think overall I am biased as I love cranes.

Thanks very much for taking the time to tell me your opinions.

Well, having endured one moderate disappointment (8421 giatn crane) and one utter disappointment (8285 the Tow Truck), I find myself having a hard time getting excited about anything Technic related for 2008. I think that NXT (which I really don't like) also kinda dampened my interested in the entire Technic field.

When I came to EB I was all Technic and Castle, but for me these days the action is clearly in City with the incredible Cafe Corner and almost as good Market Street. Even the smaller 6-wide sets are great - the Garbage truck is my fav set of the year so far after CC.

I agree the bulldozer looks promising - maybe it will restore my enthusiasm. The small and medium sized sets annouced for Jan 2008 certainly won't.

Hah! Another techinc discusion with 8421! Great! were to begin..

Your points about 8421 are spot on glyman. But i still feel there's hope for it yet. For me, the only real problem with 8421 was like you and sinner already have stated was the pneumatics. Why lego only added two cylinders is way beyond me. It has just enough power to lift the boom. And it crashing down? Ya. No need to go into that. I added an additional 2 cylnders to mine and it works just fine! I also closed the open ports in the clyinders back to the switch. This drasicly helps the boomcome down alot slower. Other than that, i think this was a good techinc set. But i'm preeety partial to cranes. I look forward to lego's next one.

Asfor the tow truck, what didn't you like about it? I agree that it isn't perfect (the boom should have had pneumatics as its not geared low enough to lift it with any load on it.) Also i'd wish there was some way to lock the the extending portion of the boom, as it tends to slide down when you tray and hoist anything up.

Like i said, its not perfect. But not bad either.

Hopfully this new bulldozer opens up a lot of posibilites for techinc. I can see these motor function being used for the next generation crane, and such. We'll see.

It's not that these sets are useless (like say, the recent firetruck, or the Ferrari racecars, which truly are). It's that the ratio of parts and cost to functionality is so high.

The redeeming feature of 8421 to me was the colour - it did look good.

8285: it was a riot of colours, and heavily stickered. The number of fairing panels was greater than the number of technic bricks and pneumatic elements combined. Also, it felt... dunno.. flimsy, hollow, hard to describe. This is the natural consequences of using panels or vertically placed plates to make the walls/sides.

8421 was very heavy and solid feeling at least.

The remote functionality of the upcoming bulldozer is what has me excited. I tried to remotely control some of the older models, but it wasn't really doable - they were all built so compactly that there was no way to get the remote setup in there without totally changing the model. Looking at the pics was very promising -lots of technic bricks, and only a few fairings. But, I recall that when they showed some videos of the thing in FRELUG I was vaguely disappointed.

Hope springs eternal....

LEGO Creator 4996 - Holiday House EUR 29,99

Tks Sam for the find ;-)

OH thats something I'm really looking for 8-

Yay? I'm crossing my fingers that it's not white with red roof this time around. That would be boring, to be frank, but I'd probably still buy it.

I hope it has a blue roof. They have not make common sets with that since 1985.

5604-supermarket,come on lego,dont screw this up! :'-)

this will be a great year,I can feel it!

It's Duplo, don't forget ;-)

I found these Creator sets on Amazon.de:

LEGO Creator 4837 - MINI Courses (?) EUR 4,99

LEGO Creator 4838 - MINI Vehicles EUR 4,99

LEGO Creator 4994 - Gruselige (?) of Animals EUR 9,99

LEGO Creator 4995 - Freight Helicopter EUR 19,99

LEGO Creator 4996 - Holiday House EUR 29,99

Thank you for the news, sam89!

LEGO Creator 4996 - Holiday House sounds very promising and the price (EUR 29,99) seems to be humane, too.

I hope that TLC will give us a Lego City Holiday House in the style of http://www.peeron.com/inv/sets/6388-1?showpic=7846 ,too.

Something like http://www.peeron.com/inv/sets/6500-1?showpic=6344 would be a dream for me ...

new.

Bionicle 2008

Lego BIONICLE 8944 - Tanma

It's Duplo, don't forget ;-)

:-$ darn,I was exicited.well there are always the summer releases... *y*

I think we are due for some new locomotives and railcars some time soon.

This discussion about the 8421 is right on time! :-)

I have broken apart my copy yesterday and I

I'd love to see the next crane come with suspention. Attually,it been a while since any techinc set had a suspention system.

I am with you there. I also want gears...

EDIT: I forgot to mention, eventually I did find a use for my spare race buggy motor; I built a pneumatic pump around it and it actually works quite well.

Woah, so much new stuff! Time for detailed comments on all the new stuff yet again! :-P

Technic - Hm, Beach buggy? Motocross bike? I'm liking the sound of this stuff, even though I never buy Technic. :-)

Lego City - Okay, of course I'm not happy about the new police station, since I like the old one fine, but this new version will probably be on a standard baseplate, so folks who hate BURP baseplates will probably be happy. And the other sets: well, actually, I'm kind of happy! To tell you the truth, I was hoping that we'd get a new surveilence truck, and the new air police sets will help the nearly non-existant City air police force nicely. ;-)

Impulse - .... Okay, not what I was expecting. Hope TLC isn't wasting a lot of money on tiny sets like these, but who knows, maybe they will turn out okay. Can you say Parts Packs? :-)

Exo-force: Very cool names. I have high expetations for next year's Exo-force kits. :'-)

Bionicle - Well, I guess my theory about the Toa Nuva being 2008 canister sets was right! But why only 3 Nuva? And what are the others? So many questions.... *wacko*

Duplo - I wasn't going to comment on this, but when I saw that they are making a supermarket for DUPLO, well... it just got to me. :'-( WHY, TLC, WHY? Why can't City get a supermarket too? *sing*

~~END~~

They now produce Croissants for Market street, why not making a bakery, with a shop, a bakery with oven , a seller and a costumer who buys croissants.

I totally agree with you, Wout!

We need (food) shops for our Lego Citys!

Edit: Why don't you complete your nice set proposal of a bakery and add it in the following topic? http://eurobricks.hosting.ipsyn.com/eurofo...opic=9448&st=90

Since I'm not interested in the new 2008 police sets I decided to speculate about the other City sets (I think there will be more than only the police sets in 2008) coming in 2008:

Since TLC released a gas station this year, it would be consequent that there will be a fuel tanker (as truck) next year.

Since Lego continued the Train theme of last year with a passenger train station this year there might be a cargo train station like http://www.peeron.com/inv/sets/4555-1?showpic=6840 or http://www.peeron.com/inv/sets/4557-1?showpic=6905 coming out in 2008.

Since TLC always released a new level crossing when there came out some new trains, a new level crossing might be possible, too.

Since TLC is going to release some harbor extension bricks in 2008 (was mentioned some pages ago), it would be consequent that there will be a new harbor set like a depot, too. (A set like this would be universal adaptable for the harbor, the train and the "normal" city theme, too.)

Since TLC is on its right way to release classic themed sets in new style (for example the airport sets last year and the harbor sets this year) TLC surely will continue with this decision, I think. Consequently some sets like a new main street similar to http://www.peeron.com/inv/sets/6390-1?showpic=1989 , a new bank similar to http://www.peeron.com/inv/sets/1490-1?showpic=7633 , a hotel and some shops might be possible.

After my opinion a set like a main street will come out in the next years - in order to give more action to it perhaps with a bank, a shop, a police car, another car, a burglar, two police men and some other citizens.

What do you think?

But pleace notice that these things I wrote above are only my wishes, ideas and thoughts according to new 2008 Lego City sets and no official or unofficial information!

LEGO Creator 4995 - Freight Helicopter EUR 19,99

LEGO Creator 4996 - Holiday House EUR 29,99

I reckon these sound like the goods! Something just that little bit different to give an added interest to Lego City Inc! :-)

hmm...

small rebel battlepack -> 4 rebel minifigs -> 4 flesh minifig standard smilies and flesh hands -> price will drop on those parts...

:-/ X-O :-P :-) :'-) :-D X-D

Lets hope those impuls sets are small minifig packs!

(where was the time you could get 3 small sets and a lego beach ball for 7.5
