So. Who else is going to have a Bionicle media marathon?

I plan on playing all the games I have and watching the movies. Just for kicks.

I know I'm popping my BIONICLE Heroes into my Wii this week (not the best version, I've heard, but it's the only one I got). And also maybe reread all of my Scholastic books. Maybe watch every single promotional video.

Speaking of promotional videos, I re-watched the

and it just reinforced my firm belief that 2008 would have been the perfect year to end BIONICLE. Bara Magna was cool and all, and the Glatorian were nice and getting Mata Nui as a set was incredible, but actually ending with what was advertised to no end as "The Final Battle" would have been the right way to go. Especially considering the incredible surprise of what we can definitely say is the end of the story of the Matoran Universe.

Maybe we would have gotten HF a little early, and then maybe we would have eased into CCBS a little easier, and then the return of BIONICLE would have been just a bit more glorious.

Wow. I was just considering selling some of my old bionicles, but this might make me reconsider.

IF this is real, (I'm not completely convinced just yet) one thing I would like to see is better armor pieces. What I mean by that is the armor on most heroes are just flat. They can have printing sometimes, and small pieces can be attached, but it just seems kinda plain after a while IMO. So I'm hoping they add a bit more variety like the old bionicle. Just a nitpicky thing.

Oh, and I would love it if the piraka came back. Vezok was the first bionicle I ever got, and remains my favorite one.

Yes. Yes so much. If there was only one thing that they could keep from the original BIONICLE, it would be this. It speaks of great wisdom, it speaks of there being more than just the now. More layers of story than just the immediate conflict that most action themes boast.

Forget Tahu, forget the rest of the other characters, maybe even forget the masks. Hearing, or heck, even just seeing this simple phrase in the impending promotional material is a sure sign that the BIONICLE we're getting is at least just as good as the first one.

It is definitely a very cool way to introduce BIONICLE's legend. It is a bit similar to Ninjago's "Long before time had a name...", but Ninjago hasn't really used that lately.

I just made a pleasant discovery. The Ignika from Mata Nui fits over the Brain Attack heads perfectly.

Here's my own attempt from a while back, though obviously you can ignore the Hero Core. I imagine if Tahu were to appear in a Toa Mata–sized set today, he'd be more complex than this, though. This one was designed to use 33 pieces, same as the original, but I imagine that if Tahu came out this year or next he would be a $10 set and would include between 40 and 50 pieces. This was also designed to use parts in existing colors — a set would be able to include new recolors, not to mention new molds.

The two Tahu MOCs I've seen in this topic are rather tall. Personally, I'd prefer if new Toa kept to a smaller size of around 7 inches or 18 centimeters like the original Toa Mata or Toa Nuva, as well as most small Hero Factory figures. No reason to stretch things to the proportions from the medium-size Breakout sets, or worse yet, the proportions of Toa Inika sets.

Something I just noticed looking at the store set up picture is the sets are in boxes instead if the usual canister. I was kinda hoping that the canister would return. To me, that was one of the most recognizable things about it (in the store anyway) and it wouldn't be quite right without them. Or maybe I'm just too nitpicky.

Personally, I'm gonna miss the bags. Simply brilliant on a functional level. There's never been another type of LEGO package quite so convenient for me.

I wouldn't be surprised to see HF-style bags used instead of canisters or boxes; remember that the display picture is potentially quite early in development, a rough draft if you will, and the boxes shown on it may not be the final packaging type - although I do think that the boxes will remain present for the titan-scale sets

I spot a Superheroes chest on the lavasurfer's boxart, and I tend to think that this kind of torso fits better "tall" characters.

By the way, why on earth can't I see MY OWN prowile and ones of other memebrs?!

Is it because I'm new?

On the issue of bags; both BIONICLE and Hero Factory have experimented with a number of different packaging styles over the years. Regardless of what the next constraction line is, unless it's a one-off, I'm sure we'll see new (or old) styles of containers by the end.

On the topic of tahu, I don't mind larger figures at all, but tahu seems better as a smaller size. I didn't really care for the mistika version.

Also, looks like LEGO has discontinued the whole canister concept, because of muh ecology.

Yeah, just found out about that, thanks arc!

I'm really excited for this, but I'm hoping for the story, that it is a far future setting that won't require prior knowledge of lore so that it is accessible for new fans but doesn't discard all of the old continuity either. When it comes to sets I hope that the villains capture the evil, monstrous look of bionicle creatures as opposed to the more cartoony hero factory villains.

Even so, what frustrates me about many taller models is that they often feel so awkward and gangly, like the Toa Inika. Most of the extra height is in the length of the legs, not in the torso. Now, it can still be made to work. CHI Worriz has proportions that are very similar to your model, and I think that's a wonderful-looking set (though to be fair, he's supposed to look a bit monstrous). In any case, I think making those proportions the benchmark for a typical Toa should be avoided.

I was a bit doubtful about that, but I just checked that and you're right. Even the Creator mini sets stopped using canisters just this year. Personally, I don't mind, though. Canisters were flashy but I much prefer the creative things being done lately, such as the Hero Factory pouches, the Friends packages with the beveled edges, and the new Speedorz packages for this year that have really elaborate shapes all formed from the same folded cardboard as your typical box. Even if plastic canisters are in fact gone for good, I think we'll continue to see all kinds of innovation in the years to come. It's not like a set's shelf presence is any less important today than it used to be.

I say good riddance to canisters. HF spoiled me with easy storage, and if we aren't getting the bags with Bionicle, I welcome boxes. I can throw away boxes.

Though that's not to say I didn't like canisters and their creative designs. But they take up space.

I'll miss the canisters, but I'm intrigued as to what Lego will come up with next with the designs. I got into Bionicle in the '06 year (personal favourite) with the DVD Inika boxes.

Would have been a bit of a dark note to end the story on, though. And any attempt to end it more happily would have severely rushed Teridax's role IMO. Maybe I'm just biased 'cos 2009 was probably my favourite year of Bionicle. :/
