My biggest complaint for LOSS is that the body feels like a block. There's only some slight shaping from the plating, but otherwise it just feels very rectangular and unshapely.

The 2001 Rahi were better as far as shaping is concerned, before anyone brings that up. Even the Nui Jaga, arguably the blockiest in body shape, had a more animalistic body than LOSS, IMO. The only one blockier is the Manas, which was built around a clunky RC piece.

I'm also still really not feeling that chest plate face. It's just not doing it for me.

EDIT: looking at pictures to refresh myself, the plating does a better shaping job than I thought, but there's just something about the whole thing that gives this very rectangular impression. idk.

Now I've looked at those new LOSS pictures, I've got to say that those angles actually make it look rather weird. I'm not usually one for modding sets based almost entirely on Technic, but I think adding some more parts to the (vestigial) "abdomen" handle to give it a proper abdomen will help a bit. I'll probably also work on the legs and try to give them more articulation whilst at the same time keeping the function. However, it's not the first time a spider themed model has been made with completely static legs besides a striking function, one only needs to look at this set to find a recent example of this. I get the feeling that LEGO doesn't really like giving much articulation to anything with more than 4 legs nowadays.

That said, it's not the worst set I've ever seen, and it looks like a good parts pack for those who like to use plenty of Technic. The use of a chest plate as a face is genius, and even if you don't like it being used as a face, there is always the option of removing it and sticking it on another figure in place of their current chest piece to give them eyes in their chest. Shame Halloween has already passed this year

By that logic, is every Technic set or G1 Rahi also "just some random Technic parts with limbs"? Pretty much the set's whole design is built around its function. There's nothing the slightest bit random about it.

Pretty sure he just meant the sets not too easy on the eye. In which I would have to agree. IMO it looks a bit of a mess.

With good reason, I'd say. My brother made an actual eight-legged spider with multiple points of articulation in each leg using Hero Factory parts, and posing it turned out to be a real chore. Definitely gave me a new appreciation for all the four-legged and six-legged spiders LEGO has released.

I don't have any problem at all with the shaping of Lord of Skull Spiders, but with that said I haven't been able to get a good look at the actual set from all angles. I've reverse-engineered what I could on LDD, but I'm nearly 20 parts short and still can't completely figured out how the function works. Still, from what I've seen it's no less elegant in its construction than the 2001 Rahi.

You'll all get to see the LoSS from many angles very soon

And the rest of the Toa and Protectors too, why not

can't wait for the LoSS review! As I've said before, I'm a huge fan of LoSS, so I hope the function isn't a let down.

Please hurry. I don't think I can hold on much longer.

I'm glad LOSS isn't very realistic, mainly for a self-centered reason but I always liked that while rahi were clearly based on animals, most took artistic license and made a really cool alien-looking animal. IMO, LOSS does a very good job at artistic license while still being recognizable as a spider.

I'm glad you brought this up.

Everyone's complaining LOSS isn't/doesn't look like a spider, but back in the day, we had tigers and bulls that had treads instead of hind legs. :P

Don't forget the Tarakava lizards, which looked nothing like lizards :P

Yay! So I'm guessing a review's coming pretty soon? No one has done LoSS's yet!

I still kinda wish we'd save some of the reviews for the actual year they're released, but I understand they want to be up in time for the holiday season, just in case. LOSS is definitely one I'm looking forward to, though.

Plus, it's a new theme, so I can understand why Lego would want to send out the first wave of sets early, to increase awareness of the new line.

I think he's a great size. He doesn't need to be a 20-foot monster to pose a threat.

Spiders are small but still pack a punch.

Isn't there some rule about arachnids, maybe scorpions in particular... the smaller they are, the worse their venom? :P

Did VBBN just say he had the Protectors and LOSS, or are they on the way?

I'll give you one guess :D

Sorry, I haven't been keeping up with the discussion but does anybody know if this set is going to get released and when its coming out? Thanks.

-snip-

That is a fake.

Ooh! Flood Of Newness! Take your time, and get quality views.

Is that the black Brain Attack creature on the lower right?

That is a fake.

VBBN don't be a troll. Gnuklear is the Gold-Skinned being! Remember? He's the one that transported the Toa Nuva to the new future reality of Okoto. Now they have to fight to get back to the past and default the warlock Gnuklear for all time.

I will look forward to those reviews! Theres probably a few I'll skip out on though just to have the clean, totally new experience of opening them for myself.

Someone should totally MoC Gnuklear and review him though.

Y'know, I think that getting LEGO sets for free (and early) is way cooler than getting a gold mask

edit: BTW, can you post step-by-step photos of the more-interesting bits of the Protector builds? And a video demonstration of the new blaster?

Good news everyone! My NYCC Hau arrived today! :sweet: Should I open it, or wait for BZPower's comps?
