Lyichir Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 (edited) Can you picture "It warms me that you have chosen to accept our trust. Vakama will be pleased" and "It is imperative that the villages build fortification and prepare for a final defense" being spoken with the voice of "Kohlii head! You could've been lava bones!"? I certainly can. There's a difference between formal and informal situations. Talking with a newly met acquaintance is an example of the former, whereas chastising a friend who has just done something unbelievably stupid is the latter. Just as a point of comparison, contrast this: "A threat has been made against Canterlot. We don't know who is responsible for it, but Princess Celestia asked that I help provide additional protection." With this: "Twily! Ah, I've missed, you, kid. How was the train ride? I–" Those are two lines spoken by Shining Armor, a character in My Little Pony with essentially the exact same voice as Jaller from Mask of Light. The first is spoken with grave earnestness, as a military matter. The latter is a cheerful greeting to his younger sister, and is obviously quite casual. So I don't really need to imagine the two lines you mentioned in the same voice, since I've already heard similar lines that prove it can be done. Edited September 10, 2014 by Lyichir Quote
ToaofPlasma Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Collectable masks. 'nuff said Agreed. By the Way as soon as I get a FlickR account, I'll post a modified version of Aanchir's Matoran Model! Quote
TheGreatSpirit Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 I personally really liked Jaller's portrayal in Mask of Light. You must've forgotten the (annoying) opening to the movie "TAKUAAAAAAAA, TAKUUUUUAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, TAKUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!" Quote

I also found Kiina engaging and even a little bit inspiring, and I know a lot of people absolutely HATED her unbridled enthusiasm. Even Pinkie Pie from My Little Pony is hated by a number of bronies I've encountered, but I think she brings a healthy dose of levity to most of her scenes (though some of her songs were a bit annoying back in seasons one and two). Agreed. Every once in a while is fine, but for nearly every comparison is a bit too much. We get it, you like Mlp:Fim. That's all fine and good, but please regulate yourselves on using it for comparisons. Quote
Aanchir Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Agreed. Every once in a while is fine, but for nearly every comparison is a bit too much. We get it, you like Mlp:Fim. That's all fine and good, but please regulate yourselves on using it for comparisons. Sorry, but sometimes it's the most apt comparison I can come up with off the top of my head (especially since it has a surprising amount in common with BIONICLE). If I were a Transformers fan, then it's entirely possible that I'd be making Transformers comparisons instead. But I'm not, so I don't. Quote
Sir Kohran Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 (edited) Talking with a newly met acquaintance is an example of the former, Going by the changes in Jala's dialogue box over the game, he meets Takua just after Ga-Koro is attacked but before Takua goes there, and a second time when he congratulates Takua on helping there. What I quoted from is actually their third conversation, in the buildup to the Ko-Koro trip. The point being Jala maintains his formal tone even after he becomes familiar with Takua. whereas chastising a friend who has just done something unbelievably stupid is the latter. True in itself, but the problem is that Jaller in the movie never speaks as he does in the MNOLG. He uses his informal/modern tone even in serious situations. A good example is when Takua leaves him in the tunnel and he says "then you ditch me". I'm fairly sure that using the third word as a verb is a fairly recent trend. The more formal Jala seen in the MNOLG would probably have said 'abandon' instead. I merely jest, but seriously, ponies being brought up every other post is starting to get irritating. Away with the ponies. Edited September 10, 2014 by Sir Kohran Quote
Aanchir Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 (edited) Away with the ponies. Gee, you're a friendly bunch. I already apologized once, but honestly I don't see why a few references to something else I happen to genuinely like is viewed as an unwelcome intrusion. I can't imagine there'd be this kind of reaction if somebody were drawing frequent comparisons to Star Wars, or Transformers, or Skyrim. Edited September 10, 2014 by Aanchir Quote
Timeline15 Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Indeed, transformers has been mentioned quite often in this thread, and I didn't here anyone complaining. We only use the MLP comparisons because they apply. Six coloured heroes harness the elements to fight of villains with shadow powers. Sound familiar? A power rangers comparison would also be apt, if rangers ever had any semblance of character. Quote
Jetrax99 Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Indeed, transformers has been mentioned quite often in this thread, and I didn't here anyone complaining. Oh? I haven't seen any tf comparisons. Quote
Lord-Vorahk Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 That's probably because those three have strong similarities as epic good-versus-evil fantasies, while MLP only has a real story approaching that tone during the first and last episodes of a season. There's a huge gap between Bionicle and slice-of-life shows. Just because some voice actors from the movies are in MLP, and both exist to sell toys to kids, doesn't make them the same, if those villains are barely a thing. Six heroes with individual powers fighting a dark villain isn't a thing that's unique. Six heroes is basically your standard five man band, plus the extra guy that always shows up, and villains often have shadow-based abilities because people are scared of the dark. It's not exclusive to the two franchises, and it doesn't make it a worthwhile point of comparison. Furthermore, I might not be a Power Rangers fan, but just from watching Linkara's recaps, I can tell that some of the seasons had solid character writing, while MLP's overexposure on TV Tropes has led me to conclude that their version of elements are only elements in the loosest sense of the word, while the Bionicle elements, and many other franchises that have elemental powers, use the actual elements and throw in a few extras to fill out numbers. The MLP elements are more like Dragonballs or Chaos Emeralds than legitimate powers, a set of macguffins to break out whenever the villains get uppity. I can't imagine there'd be this kind of reaction if somebody were drawing frequent comparisons to Star Wars, or Transformers, or Skyrim. I have to agree - I mean, really, as long as you're making a legit comparison, where's the harm in referencing the same show more than once? As long as the comparison makes sense, it shouldn't matter. Quote

Actually, the Elements of Harmony are more like physical manifestations of the characters' defining personality traits. But that's neither here nor there. I'm not trying to make this an argument about how BIONICLE and is or isn't like other series, guys. I'm not trying to "force" ponies on anybody or shoehorn them into conversations where they're not relevant. My point is just that if I'm trying to say something about BIONICLE or Ninjago or any LEGO theme and I feel like a comparison would strengthen my case, then I'll make a comparison... and My Little Pony is one of the shows I happen to know well enough to draw meaningful comparisons to. I don't know much about Power Rangers or Transformers or Skyrim, but if you feel like making references to those things, be my guest. I'd be happy to learn a thing or two. In the meantime, I'll TRY to reference more things other than My Little Pony... but I'm not going to dig around for a slightly-relevant reference from shows I barely know or care about when there's a much more relevant one staring me in the face. I know that sometimes the amount of pony references on the Internet might be irritating for some people. But it annoys me that I mentioned ponies twice in the past two days (and my brother mentioned them once), and all of a sudden three separate people blew a fuse. If other people liking different things than you on the Internet bothers you this much, maybe you have some issues of your own that you need to work out. But all of these "offending" posts were pertinent to the points my brother and I were trying to make, and YOU'RE the ones who derailed the conversation to focus on the references we were using and not the actual points we were using them to make. EDIT: Sorry, VBBN, missed your post. I'll drop this now, but I HOPE the issue doesn't come up again. Edited September 10, 2014 by Aanchir Quote
Clone 01354 Productions Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 On the box art, why is Tahu in the same setting as Kopaka (an icy terrain), yet he is riding a lava wave? Very peculiar..... Quote
Jasonified Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Does anyone think the Skull Spiders may have a jumping ability rather like the IFB jumpers? They're made of a different build, of course, so it's unlikely. (Also, first post. Been following this thread for a while though.) Quote
