Did you guys notice the very small flap protruding down the middle of the boxes? Perhaps they could act as set "previews" you flip up to view more info. Maybe it could have a clear view of the parts, backstory, or functions.

Something vaguely similar to the rotating wrapping on the Mata canisters? That'd be beast.

I actually think that could be a sign that these packages are, in fact, resealable. Looks like there might be a tab on the bottom side that folds behind that. But hard to say for sure at this point.

;)

Actually, that makes a lot of sense. Definitely more likely than a story-flap - as cool as that would be :P

Something I've noticed about these new sets is that they've tried to appeal to every bionicle fan (The functions and armor aesthetics to name a few). It's a great effort, and they are doing pretty well at it, but there simply isn't a surefire way to please everyone. All of those "diehard" Bionicle fans will likely hate it since the reboot will "ruin their childhood" because of CCBS. Really, it's kind of pointless to complain. After all, we are just people playing with kids toys.

Ah, that's inevitable.

The "oh-wunners" think that if it isn't from 01-03, it's trash.

Tbh, I would prefer these new sets to not have any major functions. There's a reason why they phases those out except for that BA rock beast.

If you look at new Tahu, you can barely make out a "backpack" of functions. Imo, it looks kinda misplaced.

Wow, there sure has been a lot of discussion going on! I'm personally excited for boomerang Pohatu, I feel the weapon fits him pretty well, although it would have been nice to see some boots as well.

Is there any speculation on what the defenders are meant to be? Matoran replacements, or something else? I dealt like since they all had the same head and no names, that they're probably more than one of them, like the bohrok.

That 'flap' is actually present on all the Chima Speedorz boxes where the cardboard is folded, which means we will probably be seeing that used rather than the foil bags. Good job noticing!

I think that LEGO believes that these sort of boxes catch the eye better than the pouches. I'm thinking that these boxes may be larger, too, in order to take up more space. If someone can make out the box dimensions in the second leaked image from way back, please let us know.

I have to agree on the visual appear of boxes over the pouches. It also doesn't help that the pouches are sloppily wrinkled and bent on the shelves, which turns me away a bit. I was just thinking about this earlier, actually. If there would be any reason to go back to canisters, it would be shelf appeal. That, of course, won't happen, but boxes or any sort of solid packaging would do wonders for the shelf appeal of the new sets, IMO.

Why did they ever get rid of canisters? I loved them, and you could actually save them. Cardboard boxes rip, and bags are hideous (seriously; what's next, Ziploc?)

A huge gimmick of Bionicle's was the canister; no other theme did it. I wish they would bring them back, as a hexagonal shaped canister would be epic.

A huge gimmick of Bionicle's was the canister; no other theme did it. I wish they would bring them back, as a hexagonal shaped canister would be epic.

Canisters are expensive, canisters cannot collapse flat for storage, canisters are not very environmentally friendly from a production standpoint, canisters cannot be displayed on a hanging rack in stores, canisters cannot be printed on all surfaces from edge to edge... there are a lot of advantages the foil pouches have, all things considered. I think the pouches are both brilliant and beautiful, and their beauty has been increasing each year. The Invasion from Below bags are especially elegant, with art on every side of the package including the bottom! And the Legends of Chima constraction sets are fantastically colorful with flame or ice patterns covering the entire front of the package.

Don't get me wrong, canisters were great for their time. But all things considered, I already have more canisters than I'll ever need and they're taking up loads of space in my room. The pouches effectively take up no room, unless I have stuff in them in which case they take up exactly as much room as they need to for their contents: no more and no less. That coupled with their light weight made it much easier for me to transport my Hero Factory sets to and from college than my previous BIONICLE and Hero Factory sets. I also feel like I'm getting more LEGO for my money than I would be if part of my money for each set were going towards a clunky plastic canister. Incidentally, I also feel like the pouches hold up pretty well. I have not had to worry about any of the graphics on my pouches getting damaged considerably whether in use or storage, whereas a lot of my boxes get bent out of shape and some of my canisters' labels are peeling.

The new boxes look creative, but after the brilliant practicality and efficiency of the Hero Factory pouches, they'll have a LOT to live up to.

Also, PLENTY of other themes did canisters. The Knights Kingdom II sets came in plastic or metal canisters. The Dinosaurs sets all came in plastic canisters, other than the baby dinosaurs. The RoboRiders and Throwbots sets all came in canisters, though in the case of the Throwbots the canister itself was inside a cardboard box. A lot of impulse-priced LEGO Creator sets came in canisters. There are probably other examples I'm not remembering as well. BIONICLE was hardly unique in that respect, or even a pioneer in that type of packaging.

You know, I gotta say, despite the use of CCBS and the collective fear of Gen1ers (or whatever variation of the term pleases you most), I haven't seen too much "BIONICLE was better in my day!". Obviously that'll change the further we get into the line, but I see more people putting down the hypothetical of gen1ers than I actually see people making the complaint.

ToaofPlasma:

1) How dare you insult Lewa. He is cool-awesome, and I love-enjoy everything about him! (Sure the mask is different, but it is nice.)

2) Love the Akaku too; It looks exactly like the Mata one.

3) I'll just use the lavaboards as weapons. They do have technic axles, so.....

4) Why such hate for Gali's mask? I quite like it.

5) Yeah, I couldn't figure out the stand-image either, since the mask blended with the angled chest. And the lack of tan really does kill him......

6) Onua is TOO bulky. Gali was supposed to be a girl; did they exaggerate those traits? Pohatu was a fast runner; did they give him super-beefy legs? No. Hinting at things is okay, but exaggerating it to the point where Onua is shaped like an Earth is too much.

Maybe your righ about Onua. I want him to be bulky but not too bulky.

Pohatu only runs fast because of his mask lol.

Lewa looks good (Colors aside) he just not all that Lewa-like.

Btw Pohatu and Lewa are my favorite characters, but I just don't like them. Maybe they'll grow on me.

One last thing, a thing a dislike about all the toa : Their Feet.

I've noticed the same, honestly. Today I dared to go on deviantART to see what people were saying about the new sets, and to be honest... there was not a whole lot of nastiness. There were some people who said that the new sets lack what they loved about BIONICLE, but for the most part, they were reasonably polite about it. Some even said they were not terribly fond of the CCBS, but that the designs were good and they would probably buy the sets and enjoy them.

Honestly I think I saw more fanboy rage BEFORE this latest series of leaks than after. I even saw an oddly heartwarming image macro describing the situation.

Honestly I'm pretty hyped about the gear functions and I never liked those back in the day.

Well, okay, except for the Bohrok. But the Bohrok are responsible for many exceptions.

I think that's being far too cynical. Most people seem pleased with the sets so far, and what criticism there is has been fairly reasonable.

Which is interesting, since this seems, to me, at least, to be purposefully harkening back to that era specifically. I have always felt those were the best years, as far as story and design direction (mask and part design specifically). These new sets seem to be doing their darnedest to replicate that.

I, for one, love that.

Pretty much this, I also adore pouches due to their mobility and smaller prices but they are something that doesn't really catch an eye, especially when in most cases they are just stored on the selves and not even hanging from anywhere. It could very well be one of the reason why HF sells werent that good.Yeah it's not hard for me to spot one but think when a kid or his parent come there and try to find heads and tails of the package. They forgot that package is partly advertising itself.

I'm looking forward to these cardboard boxes as they seem to be an answer to many said problems. I still feel kinda sad that we will never see Mata Nui robot in a giant sack :D

Yeah. I'm a die-hard BIONICLE fan, but I love that CCBS is used on it's exciting reboot,

then you're not the kind of "die-hard fan" that zenerius mentioned. :classic:

good to know that the old fans is more open minded now. i also know a friend that says' "too bad it uses HF piece" but admit that they're pretty much gonna ends up buy the set at the end.

and yeah, that picture is much more heartwarming than the other pictures.

I can't say I do, no?

Its been great reading the news about the new pics. Looking at the Protector design, I attempted to make the skeleton on each one. Water and stone look the tallest while winter and fire are the shortest. I also love the fact that each one is build differently. But i don't mind faces matching, it makes their species look simpler compare to matching bodies with different mask. This whole push for 2015 bonicle oddly is handling every complain about the old bionicle toys and solving them in one shot.

I'm also reading you guys take on what you would like to change in the final sets, very creative.

Lastly, just looking at these promos I'm excited by the new weapon molds. All of them have a possible double function will see in other sets maybe even in the summer set. This mix of Mata and Nuva visuals are just great. You can even make an takanuva and Lhikan. Man can't wait to see the Combiners, crossing my fingers for Protector/Toa combos and Toa Kaita

Guys! take a closer look at Pohatu, theres a Guurahk staff sticking out the back
