Nekchir Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 (edited) Well, I'm going for the whole 'evil lizard robot' look. And it's roughly the size of Tuma--slightly larger. Though, I keep running into ideas that are too simplistic for the look I want for said MOC. (for the double-knee'd legs) Edited October 22, 2014 by MonkeyChud Quote

Logan McOwen Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 I don't see anything that's "unquestionably a lighting setup". Never noticed the little hydraulic rams in the fins! That's a nice touch! Quote
wghost Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 (edited) Kopaka really needs an actual shield [...] I may be a minority, but I always loved the stylized-yet-recognizable elements in Bionicle (and yeah, I've never been fond of the Chima ultrabuild elements introduced this year or the overly filled, packed, meant-to-be-naturalistic MOCs either). I think the new mould gives off the shield vibe rather nicely. b)the colour of the weapons: something that drives me crazy: they're white like him, while the spear tip is silver. Not only it looks wrong (weapons being the same colour of the wielder is something I tolerate on the Mata only, because they're iconic in their simplicity, otherwise it makes no sense),it's a wasted recolour slot that could've been used for his torso. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the shield being white either, since it is the only new tool in a character's primary color, but bear in mind that Kopaka's shield stayed white even after his Toa Nuva transformation, unlike all the other Toa Nuva's tools which became silver. So it's not like the Toa Mata were the ONLY Toa with colored tools — rather, Kopaka had one even in a series when silver tools were still a defining gimmick! Hmm, I agree with both sides to a certain degree, but I have to admit Kopaka looks a little bit too white - I think either changing his shield or his shell add-ons (or even his feet) to standard silver would have been a great help. Now basically the only things which are silver on the model are the torso and the spearhead - and unfortunately, the trans light blue isn't that much of a contrast either, being present mostly in the form of bones. Yeah, Tahu's and Gali's trans parts don't stand out that much either because of the similar hues in comparison to the solid-colored parts, but still - I would have liked Kopaka to be more balanced out color scheme-wise. But overall, a very solid design. On another note, am I the only one who thinks Onua, on the contrary, is rather colorful? I get the concept of giving golden armor to the larger sets and silver to the smaller ones and also the dual metallic color schemes (silver-gold and silver-dark silver, respectively), but the combination of purple, gold, black and silver seems a little bit much (I suspect the clash of purple and gold to be the main culprit). No, at first I thought this to be the most garish thing in constraction I have ever seen. It kind of looked like a ripoff set with too many different colors. It was all the weird metallic colors that made it look cheap to me. After studying his appearance and comparing it to the years before I found out they are part of quite a few respectful nods to every Onua iteration to date, and so now I am OK and actually excited about his build design choices. I think that every Toa set in this wave actually has a few elements of all 3 (and a half) of the toa's older versions- its just that the original '01 mata influences are the strongest and it kind of distracts from the other details. The metal sheets are like a crossover of Onua Nuva's shoulder armor and Mistika's giant shield. Its like he is using 2 giant shields to make his armor. The most out of place thing really present is that gold in every toa set (except apparently Pohatu) that hasn't really been explained yet. Edited October 22, 2014 by InfurnallDragon Quote
Kalhiki Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 So... I was thinking. How do you want this new Bionicle to sound? Music-wise, I mean. I think it'd be pretty neat to hear a more oriental sound overall. But I think it'd be really neat if every region had their own sound kinda like what the MNOG did. One thing's for sure, though: Po Wahi needs didgeridoos. Quote
Toa of Gallifrey Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 (edited) I'd also like the regions to have their own sounds. I'd love for Ga-Koto and Ko-Koto (that's what I'm calling the regions till we get canon names) to have music similar to the Ga-Koro and Ko-Wahi themes (respectively) from BTG. I'd like something like MNOG Onu-Koro theme for Onu-Koto and something like Bionicle Heroes Matoran Enclave theme for Ta-Koto. For Le-Koto, I think the BTG Le-Wahi theme would be nice. Not sure what for Po-Koto, other than definitely didgeridoos. Edited October 22, 2014 by Toa of Gallifrey Quote
arc Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 I'd also like the regions to have their own sounds. I was gonna say the same thing, I liked how in bionicle heroes each set of levels had its own sound for the region. (I'd love to have a fast paced battle scene with avaks battle theme) but I like all the music from that game, and would be happy to have a similar soundtrack for any new bionicle media. Quote
Toa of Gallifrey Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 Yeah, the Bionicle games might not be very good from a gameplay perspective (Maze of Shadows notwithstanding, that one nails gameplay as well), but they have fantastic soundtracks. Quote
Nekchir Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 Alright, so...I finished my contest entry MOC. Anyone wanna see it and critique it, before I submit it? Quote
Toa of Gallifrey Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 I don't think we should discuss entries in this thread, but if you'd like to shoot me a PM I'll critique it. On the topic of the contest, since the Skull Spider mask is the one being distributed, I'm subscribing to the theory that it's the MoUP. Quote
Kalhiki Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 (edited) ^^You can create a new topic for it and get suggestions there. Improve it based on those suggestions, and then submit the entry. Along with music, I'm also trying to figure out what kind of cultures we'll see on Okoto. If the Toa are anything to go by, Po-Okotans seem to be inspired by aboriginals. Them being nomads would be cool as well. Ko-Okotans might be the warrior types judging by Kopaka's beefy, armored look. Ta-Okotans could be scholars. It'd be cool to see a culture swap between Fire and Ice characters from the original story (Ko were more monks and knowledge seekers and Ta were the warriors (in MNOG at least)). The rest are kinda difficult... Haven't figured what they could be like. Edited October 22, 2014 by Kalhiki Quote

Aanchir Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 The Mata Nui Online Game is the only BIONICLE game whose soundtrack ever really stuck with me, but then again, it's also one of the only BIONICLE games I ever really enjoyed extensively. I much prefer adventure games to action games in general, and even so there are not too many games that I've enjoyed playing all the way through multiple times. Mata Nui Online Game is one of those. In general, I think there are plenty of directions that a BIONICLE soundtrack could take. All I hope is that whatever soundtrack we eventually get will have a uniquely BIONICLE flavor, and won't just feel like generic orchestral adventure story music. Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, and LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu have all had beautifully distinctive soundtracks that use Asian rhythms and instrumentation to define their universes. And The LEGO Movie had a soundtrack with a sound that suited the slightly "janky" stop-motion look that defined it. The music of the BIONICLE movies was definitely memorable, but it never felt as perfectly suited to its universe to me as any of these did. It was a sound that could perhaps have belonged to any number of fantasy adventure stories such as The Lord of the Rings or The Chronicles of Narnia. Back in 2001, BIONICLEmusic.com offered us this beautiful description: "The music of BIONICLE is a mixture of the mystical and the mechanical. Like the Toa, it blends the power of high technology with a raw elemental force." This inherent dichotomy between fantasy and futuristic science-fiction, immediately visible with just a glimpse of the robotic-looking heroes amidst naturalistic island settings, was hardly noticeable in the BIONICLE movie soundtracks. I can't help but hope that the BIONICLE media for 2015 can carve out a musical identity right from the beginning that it will then be able to stick with for the long haul. Quote

I'd like to take a look at it. So, what do you guys think LEGO will do with the other 7 golden masks? If they are giving them out to the public (which they likely are), maybe there could be contests centered around each mask element? For example, the Mask of Stone could have a contest to create some sort of stone-themed character. Edited October 23, 2014 by Zenerius Quote

Aanchir Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 Just saw the U.S. prices. Are those normal for constraction these days? Damn. Pretty much, though it's not really that unusual when you think about it. The sets are priced according to their complexity. The new Toa are around 20 cents per piece, same as the original Toa Nuva or Toa Inika were. It's just that their designs have gotten more complex, and thus use considerably more pieces than Toa used to. Also, in the past few years of Hero Factory, heroes and villains would mostly be split between the $10 and $13/$15 price points. But Hero Factory didn't really have any secondary characters like Matoran or Protectors. Putting the Protectors at the $10 price point pushes the main heroes (the Toa) up to the $15 and $20 price points. Quote
Chro Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 Eh, I dunno. This contest feels too large to have seven repeats. :P Quote
Nekchir Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 They're probably going to do a random drawing, story writing contest, etc. Quote
Toa of Gallifrey Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 Yeah I'm suspecting they'll do a variety of different contests. Maybe another MoCing contest for the Mask of Creation, this time MoCing a good guy. Quote
XONAR Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 Personally, I'd love nothing more than to see another web design contest, but I'm certainly not expecting anything of the sort. Quote
