You mean for the Toa or the Protectors? On the Toa it looks fine. On some of the Protectors it does look a bit funny, though. I think it looks best on the Protector of Fire, for whom it doesn't stick out quite so far.

The Protectors... Yes, I thought it looked funny. On the Toa it's fine...

I understand why some of you BIONICLE fans doesn't like him - he is surely good as the 2001 Rahi sets....

The problem is that the Toa doing everything that the 01 Toa do, have articulation, dual weapons, and their golden masks included, and a bonus skull spider. LoSS has one of those features. Meanwhile, the the Toa are, IMO, better than any other Toa sets we've had. Even the Hagah, because ball-jointed shoulders. LoSS is equal to the 01 Rahi, which were surpassed by their successors in later years.

I'm definitely going to have to see a review of Lord of Skull Spiders before I can judge it, because a lot of the complaints I've seen like the lack of articulation are things that seem to make a lot of sense to me. My brother built an eight-legged spider out of Hero Factory parts, and with that much articulation, posing it was a bit of a chore. Not to mention that the function seems like you'd want to avoid having "recoil" on the legs.

I'm not prepared to say that the set is as good as the 2001 Rahi, because it seems to me like its competitive play potential is a little bit one-sided, with no built-in failure state. But it seems to offer a very good value for money, and I like its shape, so if the function works smoothly then there's not much more I could ask for. I'm not sure what other sets might be coming in the summer, but it would be very cool if Lord of Skull Spiders were foreshadowing even more creature sets with creative Technic functions.

Aha, I knew DV was designing these sets

dangit i was trying so hard not to make that comment :P

First I should probably make it clear that LoSS's function is built using a rubber band- you can't keep his legs in a "closed" position.

Second, on each side of the spider, each set of three legs is on one axle that rotates down. There is no focus on the front legs- I had assumed the function was that the front legs could pick up a mask, but that is not possible. Let me put it this way, imagine you set him on your arm, with his face looking down the length of the arm. When you squeeze the trigger, all of his legs would wrap around your arm.

As for weight, he is actually pretty heavy, and actually a bit front heavy.

well, I knew all his legs closed. What I meant was that the back of the box showed him picking up a mask with his front legs, which is where I got the idea that it was made with the front legs in mind, but I guess that was wrong.

I think LOSS would be much better if he had a similar design to the Visorak. He'd retain his six legs but only the front two would grab while the back four could be pose-able.

Actually, I might mod him to be like that. I'll have to see him in-hand first, though.

Jungle definitely has back armor. Stone uses a "fat" design, carbon copy of the Ice Protector's body so I would assume he has back armor too. Water does as well.

Edit: Aanchir, could you revert your avatar to the one with hair and stop being a ninja?

Not sure what you mean about the Protector of Earth. He has no back armor and is very different than the Protector of Ice due to the chest-mounted blaster. I guess you meant Stone?

Once a ninja, always a ninja.

Nah, in all seriousness, I'm just lazy. I'll change it back eventually.

D'OH. Yeah, I meant Stone. Fixed it now.

So I did my first round of photoshooting today, here's a sneak preview using my favorite set of course

By the way, no, Protector of Stone does not have back armor. But he has those DELICIOUS trans neon yellow/green flame pieces.

I'm not sure whether this has been brought up before, but LOSS can be seen in Pohatu's box art, but he looks a bit more... green, than usual.

All the Toa save Gali have LOSS on their box art, creeping around in the background. I'm assuming they just couldn't find somewhere to put it in Gali's background. Either that, or it's there and I just have yet to notice.

Gali looks wonderful. Need to see more pictures of Pohatu before I decide which is my favorite.

It's funny. It seems that no one really liked Gali (well, her mask at least) from the preliminary pictures, but it's turning out she's one of the best.

Something I actually discovered when comparing Gali's new mask to her old mask is that it's more similar to the old one than people give it credit for. From the side, the curve of the forehead is even closer to the original than either version of the Kaukau Nuva. The chin is really the biggest difference from previous versions, I think — but that's also one of the areas where I think the design is most improved!

Well, I'm still unsure on her mask. I've warmed up to it (far more than I have to the Mask of Jungle, which still looks ugly to me) but I still have reservations on it.

Posted

I think that her new chin looks more like a train's cow-catcher then anything. I do like her new mask a lot though, it is befitting of the old Kaukau while not having to be oddly translucent.

I too think the kaukau does look better than I previously thought, (especially in the real out of box pics) but no matter how hard I try, I can't get used to that miru. I just don't like it.

This pose makes her pretty feminine. Nice Work!
