TheGreatSpirit Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Well,Lego is willing to butcher the already nonserious HF fora new Bionicle, then some elements must carry over. Sure, it will be sillier, but as long as it treats itself seriously, then I believe everyone will be satisfied. Quote
Floundie Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Is this the picture you guys are talking about? I'm quite a bit skeptical about this, but I'll be damned if I'm not excited anyway! Quote
SoupOrFishOil Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 I couldn't get into the Ninjago series, myself. I have only watched the first few episodes, but that isn't exactly what I would want out of BIONICLE. Aanchir does bring up some good points, but Ninjago still seems to embrace the campiness more than I would like in a BIONICLE series. No, I didn't mind things like the taxi crab and I would actually love to see Tamaru return, especially with the rest of the chronicler's company, but I don't know how easily I could accept Lewa and Pohatu playing video games in between encounters with Ankhomu, who is raiding a village for candy. Anyway, maybe I should try a few more episodes of Ninjago to better assess what I would like and what LEGO might be willing to have done. I never did get as far as the episodes which it seems get all of the praise. Why can't we have a Bionicle series with the same sort of tone as Avatar: The Last Airbender? One that takes itself seriously for the most part and has an underlying mythology that is constantly being explored... That is exactly what I was thinking when this topic came up. That doesn't seem to be the kind of thing Cartoon Network would go for, looking at some of the shows they have cancelled, though if the toys sell well, there might be an exception. And the president and CEO who was seemingly behind that "toys and boys" policy was removed. Anyway, I guess, that maybe some other channel more receptive to that kind of show could pick it up, unless CN and LEGO have some exclusive contract. Quote
MakutaDreadscythe Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 (edited) Sorry 'bout bringing up shells again, but I do think it's a good point. I noted different designs would be cool, but I think the line would have a good time if they utilised the modded shell used on Breakout Rocka during the animated movie (the one with an axle hole on the side) or variants of it. It would also solve the usual complaint that technic and CCBS have some trouble mixing sometimes. Oh, and in regards for the story, I imagine they'd probably have it along the lines of Chima's story, somewhat serious with a few jokes inbetween. That I would not be totally opposed to, be a nice break from the whole "Everyone is a traitor. Plot twists are our bread and butter. This guy is a great spirit now because he is brown." thing they had going. Edited July 10, 2014 by MakutaDreadscythe Quote
Shakar Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 I'd actually love if BIONICLE returned to having some even smaller $5 sets, like Matoran or small Rahi. Clearly there's still a market for sets at that price point, judging from the Mixels, Friends animal packs, etc. Furthermore, judging from current constraction set prices, a $5 set would probably have to include between 20 and 30 pieces. With the flexibility of this building system there's no reason the LEGO Group couldn't do that. They might even be able to use a similar business model to the Friends animal packs or Ninjago booster packs and rotate them out more frequently, so we could have a new wave of three small sets every four months. The only question is whether the constraction category is strong enough to support that many sets in addition to regular $10–$35 sets... but with a theme like BIONICLE I would certainly hope so. Yes, I agree! The XT4 torso seemed almost tailored for that but they never followed on that. I'd love to see some Matoran or small mook villains like the Bohrok Va. Quote

Aanchir Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 (edited) Allegedly :U He doesn't have to say "allegedly". Whether he's right or wrong, everyone can tell he's alleging it. :P Anyway, here's a Matoran MOC I designed! It's 21 pieces and stands 10 centimeters tall, so should be fairly well-proportioned next to a 7 inch/18 centimeter Toa. I think he'd be a good $5 set once you add tools/weapons: Edited July 10, 2014 by Aanchir Quote
Floundie Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 That is the image, and it is legitimate I'll try my best to believe you but honestly this whole thing feels very bizarre. I feel like I'm in shock. Quote
Infernum Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Nice build and idea Aanchir! Why the toes though? Quote
Lyichir Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Nice build and idea Aanchir! Why the toes though? Matoran had two toes for a long time, from 2001 to 2006 (as did a few Shadow Matoran as well in 2008). Additionally, that foot design is one of the most well-suited to a figure that size, but so far it only comes in black. I've taken his Matoran design and am working on tweaking it somewhat to create a diverse set of six Matoran of different elements, all of which use only parts in existing colors so far. Quote
TheGreatSpirit Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Nice concept, but the toes and the completely straight arms bother me a bit... As for the legs, might i suggest 2 of the smallest bonepiece piece per leg instead of just the one? It would add proper knees, and I believe not too much more height. Quote
TheOneVeyronian Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 I really like the Matoran idea as well, the one thing that I feel Hero Factory was missing was readily available extra small sets like that. I know I'd buy a ton of them just for parts (especially if they all used XT4 torsos, I can never have enough of them and they're quite pricey compared to the other torso parts on Bricklink). After all, LEGO have proved that they can do extra small sets like this year's Breez polybag, so why not take that and put them into "normal" set production? I think they'd sell pretty well if priced right. Aanchir's Matoran looks quite stubby to me though, but I don't mind that Quote

I would love to have CCBS shells that connected to axles! But "somewhat serious with a few jokes" is not n any way how I would describe Chima's story, at least not the one of the TV show XD. As for a Bionicle series, I would quite like it to have the sort of tone that mask of light did. it had light/comedic moments, but was overall a fairly intense story. Quote

Aanchir's Matoran looks quite stubby to me though, but I don't mind that I actually kind of liked that about Hero Factory; because the focus of the line was actually on the impulse buy sets, they took a step-up in caliber. Nothing against Aanchir's design (love the toes!), but that's not the kind of thing I would want from a set, since the playability is less than what we've come to expect. Quote
XONAR Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 (edited) Nice MOC, Aanchir. Has this picture been posted yet? Yes, and people have been working very hard to get it taken down from everywhere. I would suggest removing it, because it puts the leaker's job at risk. Edited July 10, 2014 by XONAR Quote
Aanchir Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 (edited) Nice concept, but the toes and the completely straight arms bother me a bit... As for the legs, might i suggest 2 of the smallest bonepiece piece per leg instead of just the one? It would add proper knees, and I believe not too much more height. You could fix the straight arms if you swapped them for two 3M beams each. It could actually make the set slightly cheaper, I think, since you'd be using more of the same parts (so it would be less of a logistical hassle), though he'd be a bit bonier. But there were a couple reasons I didn't do that. For one, I feel like having more shells and longer beams offers slightly more potential to build and rebuild than just having a bunch of shorter beams with only two connection points each. Additionally, 3M beams come in pitfully few solid colors, although of course my option isn't using entirely parts in colors that exist anyway. Finally, having a beam and a shell offers more potential for variety, since you could use different size shells or no shell at all depending on the set. Either way looks fine I think. I deliberately chose to avoid knees mainly because I was trying to evoke the relative height of a 2003 Matoran, in accordance with my earlier 2001 Tahu sketch. Back in 2003, Matoran and Turaga alike were about half the height of a Toa, while after 2003 they tended to be closer to 2/3 the height of a Toa. I don't particularly think a model this small needs knees, but this design could work just fine whichever way you prefer, since with knees it'd be closer to the relative height you'd expect from post-2003 Matoran. I think it'd still be about a $5 set either way. Edited July 10, 2014 by Aanchir Quote
The Overlord Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 (edited) Nice MOC, Aanchir. Has (link to photo snip) been posted yet? Last thing I heard about that one is that we're trying to avoid it to protect the leaker's identity. I, for one, don't want anyone to lose their job over it. Mr. Gundam Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Speaking of Matoran.... I found this image on an india website, these small designs of chima below. The reason why im posting it here cause this could be the prototype design of CCBS Matoran. I quite like it, Also my bad about the hotlink, doing this on my phone Quote
Sir Walter Maugham Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 (edited) I'm not trying to be a jerk here or anything, but the leaker did leak that right? Doesn't that mean he already took the risk into account and wants it out there anyway? Edit: dat filter Edited July 10, 2014 by Sir Walter Maugham Quote
Dorek Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 (edited) The perennial argument of anybody who reveals classified info that they aren't supposed to. The long and the short of it is that people still don't want to lose their jobs over something, so they want an image that people see but that can't be traced to them. All things considered, I find the whole "cloak and dagger" routine pretty ridiculous, which is why the "leaker" role is so incredibly suspicious to me. (Also these CHI minis, while doubtfully a prototype for anything, are adorable and I want them) Edited July 10, 2014 by Dorek Quote
Bob C Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Is Bionicle's fanbase centered around the US? It seems like all the elaborate Bionicle marketing things were done here in the US. Quote
