Bigger Fish Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 My idea is that the MOUP is just a sentient manifestation of evil.....Sort of like Satan. Nothing really creates it, nothing controls it; it just....is. Also, I'm starting to feel the real story hype now: who gave the Mask Makers their masks?! Were there former mask makers, or are Ekimu and Makuta the first of their kind? Also, I have a pretty good idea of who their father is....... Those were the perfect words to describe it: campy and lighthearted. A story doesn't have to be dark in order to be good; in fact, stories usually suffer because they try to make it TOO dark. Right now, the characters are quirky and bright, but they're not bad in any way. I, personally, love the new BIONICLE: it's bright, it's fun, and it feels like '01! And anyway, do we really want to see another incident like....<sniff>....Matoro? So that's why Ekimu isn't named Mata Nui! -The ruins don't seem so much post-apoc as post-cataclysm/whatever, but I get your point there. It IS exciting to have mystery back. -As for the skull spiders being actual villager skulls...I'm skeptical. Considering that 1) the villager skulls are likely their head frames, which look nothing like the skull spiders, and 2) the skull spiders are face huggers--it's really hard to hug a head with another head--that scenario seems unlikely. I know it was said here before, but a story does not have to be dark to be complex or good. Does the darkness add a dramatic element? Sure. But there are many other ways of doing that. Which path TLG will follow yet remains uncertain. Also, I think it's really funny that people point to 2006 as the darkest story year. Because when I think of 2006, all the animations of the Piraka being incredibly stupid come to mind first. The Piraka rap was beautiful art and no one can deny that. Quote

(No but seriously it was basically everything else about 2006. The constant use of death, the fact that the Piraka are a "gang", etc.) Quote
Quisoves Pugnat Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 (edited) I'm not denying that the story has its decidedly darker elements, and I certainly wasn't expecting "sunshine and rainbows." I don't think anyone was. But there is a difference between, for want of a better term, "Voodoo-Dark," like 2001's portrayal of Makuta, and Grimdark, like the Piraka. The former draws its menace from being primeval and alien, the latter from being thuggish, cruel, and callous. Post-apocalyptic worlds tend to go for Grimdark, and so the connotations of such a style are inevitable. Of course, Okoto as we've seen it has suffered from a cataclysm , but I wouldn't qualify it as "post-apocalyptic." The island's society has gone backwards, but it still is an ordered, functioning society. PoF comic and PoF set PoI comic and PoI set PoJ comic and PoJ set Unfortunately, only the PoF links work, but on the basis of those photos, I should say there is a difference between the similarities there and the ones I mentioned. The Fire Protector picture, though obviously based on his box art, doesn't immediately strike me as a copy. It has its own, distinct identity. The panel with Lewa and the PoJ, while not identical to their box-art, instantly strikes me as a drawing of them. Of course, that might just be me, but here are the pictures for comparison. Comic. Box art. Edited January 23, 2015 by Quisoves Pugnat Quote
Bigger Fish Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 I love how casual and uninterested PoJ looks in that comic when faced by a Skull Spider. Quote

Box art. Nuts, I took a shortcut with the images, didn't pay off. The Protectors gallery should explain what I'm talking about. Dum!Dum!'s style is slightly more exaggerated, but they're often the same poses down to the letter. The other comics are just less stylized and more direct. Both contain a unique art style as it is anyway, so I'm perfectly okay with getting more of the European versions. Quote
mysteriouspi Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 What are you talking about? This is the epitome of evil and darkness: I tremble. And not out of fear. Quote

The only other Protector I can see whose comic is blatantly copied from his box-art is the PoI, and it, like the PoF's comic, has its own identity, or so it seems to me. Part of the difference might be the setting. The Dum!Dum! Protectors are fighting oncoming skull spiders. The Post-Apoc Lewa and PoJ seem to be jumping on a pair of grazing skull spiders. The former looks natural, the others seem cut-and-pasted. Quote
Aanchir Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 Just wanted to share, I took some new BIONICLE photos today! 70789 Onua - Quiet Wisdom by Aanchir, on Flickr 70784 Lewa - Daring Enterprise by Aanchir, on Flickr Quote
Quisoves Pugnat Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 Not bad! Onua is wonderfully poseable, isn't he? Quote
Takanuinuva Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 (edited) For my mods I made a custom torso to work with the gearbox. It works for all of the Toa except for Onua due to his torso armor. I made it since I didn't like the exposed balljoints on Gali, Lewa, Tahu and Pohatu. And I didn't like how Kopaka's shoulder armor was placed. I could provide an LXF file but I want to wait for an LDD update that adds the new gearbox. Though if anyone really wants to see it. I'll build a temporary gearbox for the torso instead. vl_cn Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 (edited) Hey guys, my personal impressions on the G2 sets so far... Lewa - Peter Pan (Owned by Disney) Pohatu - Master of Spinjitzu (The brown one) Gali - Surge and Breez had a daughter!? Tahu - Captain Okoto (The tropical warrior) Kopaka - Snow Vader (Now also owned by Disney) Onua - The Mighty Hulk (With the voice of Groot) LoSS - Hagrid's former pet (Now with 25% less legs!) ...I must say I liked the G1 story better. Risgrynsgrot Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 ...I must say I liked the G1 story better. What story? We've had 4 clips, each just a few minutes. Give it some time before you start to complain. Quote
Timeline15 Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 I've personally never liked the idea that just because something is young, you can't complain about it (not that what he said even sounded like complaining). Obviously you do have to take into account how little we've seen, but at the same time, it's not like the story's just started. We're already at the 'find the golden mask' bit. The toa have met their protectors, had Okoto explained to them, and gone in search of their masks, in the space of about 5 minutes on our end. As much as I like the style of these shorts, they're a phenomenally bad way of telling this story. Quote
Logan McOwen Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 (edited) I just wanna share this GIF because it makes me smile like the biggest idiot. zoop there he is It's also the sole reason why I want to buy PoF, which is terrible. Edited January 23, 2015 by LewiMOC Quote
MakutaDreadscythe Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 LEGO has started posting various Bionicle stop motion animations on YT, they've got Onua, Pohatu, Tahu and Gali at the moment, though this will likely change soon. They're pretty interesting IMO. Quote

Alright, sure. Now 2015.... Use mask powers which allow them to control the very elements, fight terrible monsters (AKA skeletons with weapons), liberate an entire city, liberate an entire island, find masks of incredible power, awaken Ekimu, etc. They're basically the same, actually. Toa had to in the end get golden masks in 01. They're just doing it quicker now and with a lot less fluff. It's January. Hardly time to even judge. Heck, if we went to 01, we'd be annoyed at MNOG for being about beach travel. =P Quote
Clone 01354 Productions Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 What I meant to say, in short, is that; use awesome mask powers, fight terrible monsters, defeat Makuta, save Mata Nui sounds a lot cooler than find recolored versions of their otherwise meaningless masks, fight insects similar to masks in size, defeat man-eating-but-otherwise-not-evil spider, establish feudal system over Okoto Anything could sound simple when you say it like that. Here: Gen 1 was just: -Wake up a sleepy robot so he can blow up a bad guy. See that? It's exactly what you did. Right now in Gen 2, the story is: -Find powerful golden mask to unlock the Toa's true potential, in order to defeat a horde of villains who threaten the island. They must also re-awaken the ancient mask makers, and destroy a (supposedly) sentient Mask of Ultimate Power. People complain just to complain. Quote
Rayskull Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 Well, I thought it was that piece, with the wheel piece on top of it. The thin technic wheel in trans light blue comes with the new agents helicopter! Quote
Kalhiki Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 I'm glad G1 was brought up again, because yes, early G1 and G2 a pretty much the same. -G1 had 6 Toa being summoned to an island, fighting creatures, collecting masks, going to an ancient temple, and fighting a bad guy. Later a horde of new villains (Bohrok) awaken. -G2 has 6 Toa being summoned to an island, fighting creatures, collecting masks, going to an ancient city where they'll presumably fight the bad guy (LOSS). After that new villains (Skull Army) awaken. That's pretty much the bare-bones version. And as you can see, the story in that perspective (for either generation) isn't very complex or deep. Also, I'd like to take the time to point out that in G2, the Toa are still learning about their powers. At this point in time, a horde of head-sized spiders would still pose quite a threat to them if they don't have full control over or are unable to use their elemental powers. Quote
The Kumquat Alchemist Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 (edited) The one big difference for me between G1 and G2 is that G2 doesn't have an equivalent of MNOLG. That game was so great for fleshing out Matoran as being more than 6 weird clone sets from Happy Meals, and I feel like the Okoto villagers could stand to have the same done to them. Right now they're pretty much scenery whenever they do appear, with exception of the 6 Protectors. Edited January 23, 2015 by The Kumquat Alchemist Quote
