I think the Toa have innate environmental elemental powers like the night-vision, strength, fire-resistance of the classic Toa that hint at their full powers, but gaining the masks could be compared to Harry Potter getting his wand and learning to concentrate his powers.

Yeah, but still....Tahu couldn't use any fire powers, Lewa couldn't fly, Kopaka couldn't use the shield-bubble, etc...So it just doesn't make sense for Pohatu to control sand before he unlocked his powers.

It would seem that gaining the gold masks fully unlocked their powers; powers that they already had access to, but only weak access. That's likely how Pohatu made his sandstorm. Also, idk if the character bios are regarded as canon or not (since LoSS shows up in all of them but doesn't in the animations), but Lewa is definitely flying in his bio before retrieving his gold mask.

I thought that too... until I saw that none of the Toa used them until they got their Golden Masks.

I think it's to emphasize the fact that they get more powerful. If they were shown using their elemental powers before getting the golden masks, kids could have been confused about what the golden masks' purpose is. They wanted to make the difference clearly visible, methinks.

Wow, so much discussion of stuff... Cool!

Anyways, I'm not sure if anybody brought this up but looking at the Forge in the ancient city, it looks like an anvil! The protrusions on the roof are asymetrical to give the building an "anvil Look". Clever....

Most of the supplementary material refers to the Toa having elemental powers, which is why they're called "Masters" of their respective elements; the gold masks are then meant to be that much more of a desirable item because they make the Toa even MORE powerful.

So since the Toa are basically in berserk mode on over 9000 power with the golden masks, it's not too surprising LOSS was such a pushover =P.

Since Ekimu and Makuta use anvils as part of their job, it's a good motif to have.

Yeah, pretty sure the masks only serve as a power-up.

That combined with the fact it was 6 Vs 1, their combined strength overwhelmed him. Though, i would'nt be too suprised if either LoSS was just designed to gaurd the city against singular foes or is simply a random large spider that happened to make a nest their. Either way, LoSS's strength comes from over-whelming the enemy with his size or his army of Skull Spiders. Neither were here to help him when he fought the Toa.

How I'm seeing things until proven otherwise:

-Toa and protectors are different species of Biomechanical beings (Good comparison are the Galvanic Mechamorphs from Ben 10), that are born in the same way humans are. They're born elementless, and the first mask they wear (normally chosen at birth) infuses and defines their element. It doesn't mean they can't use other element powers, but their defined element is the one they feel most "at home" with.

-Protectors can grow into toa-like figures, and some can gain the height of them (similar to how some people can be really tall where others are short). This does not mean they are Toa, it means that they just look like it.

-The skull spiders are created with the Golden Mask of Skull Spiders (which I'm going to refer to as the Skull Krata), and anyone who holds it/wears it has the entire skull spider army at their feet to do their bidding.

-Makuta has always had an evil streak to him, which was only amplified by instability in the MoUP, and he was the one that forged the Skull Krata.

-Ekimu and Makuta aren't exactly "Mata Nui and Teridax", more "Artakha and Karzahni"

-The Toa have their G1 mask abilities in them anyhow (Tahu can make fire shields, Lewa can levitate/fly anyway, Onua is the strong guy (explains size), Kopaka's scopes allow x-ray vision, Pohatu's 'rangs can allow him to run fast, and Gali's water powers includes water breathing)

-The villagers wear different masks for casual events, the protector masks are for formal/big events (akin to wearing a suit), it's considered slightly rude to not wear one to such an event.

-Despite them owning the largest forge and making the best masks in the land, Ekimu and Makuta aren't the only ones that have forges and the ability to make masks. However, they are the only ones capable of infusing elemental power, everyone else can infuse passive abilities (like G1 mask powers).

-Skull Spiders can share powers with host bodies, so a Silver mask would make the host super fast, the Green one gives x-ray vision, and the blue one makes the host very resilient to damage (and thus are the hardest to remove.)

I think that covers everything, I think.

Hmm, I never thought of it that way! I always hated the trans-pieces, but pretending they're "magical" does add a nice little effect to the sets.

Yeah, I actually read an interview in BrickJournal saying that that's one of the big reasons LEGO often uses transparent parts for treasures like the LEGO Atlantis treasure rings, the moonstones in Monster Fighters, or even the energy crystals in themes like Power Miners and Rock Raiders. Transparent colors convey a sense of magic or energy, especially when they're a bright or fluorescent color that looks "glowy".

In the new BIONICLE sets, I think the transparent parts help the characters' limbs (and the Protectors' masks) look like they're pulsing with elemental energy (kind of like the transparent limb pieces of Toa Inika Jaller and Matoro). It's a pretty cool effect. And some sets have used it in interesting ways, like how CHI Panthar and the new Pohatu each have one normal arm and one "energized" arm that they use for attacking.

That's how I've felt about it, and I agree. It's very neat. It shows that these characters aren't just dudes who use and control elements, but rather they're infused and have a deep connection with them. Puts a sort of spiritual spin on things, in my eyes.

I was rewatching episode 9 and felt a little worried about something: what happened with the golden Skull Spider mask? We never saw it at all. This is likely it for the winter story, so what are the chances it'll be featured in the summer story? (I'm asking this as a legitimate question, were there ever any Chekov's guns like this in G1 sets that didn't get addressed at all till the next wave?)

^^Pohatu: Built entirely out of Australium.

Hehe, well said.

It was probably just included to give LOSS a golden mask. I doubt it'll have any effect on the story.

Well, the site specifically says that it's for controlling the Skull Spiders, so it's "canon". But I pointed out earlier that it's an easy thing to omit from the episodes, so we probably won't see it again.

There's actually a good chance that it will be featured later at some point, because it is actually placed specifically as a Chekov's gun within the animations. Once LoSS has been defeated, Pohatu looks over at the podium standing in the center of the bridge and asks something along the lines of "what went here?" only to be interrupted by Tahu loudly proclaiming his latest vision from Ekimu.

If the Toa get to be advertized in the summer cartoons, there isn't any reason that LoSS or the Skull Spiders that actually come with the Toa couldn't too.

I haven't visited this thread in 3 days....I see we still on this subject.

Since we've covered a broad range of discussion topics in the past 24 hours alone, I'm having trouble understanding which "subject" you're referring to.

I thought the mask was supposedly where the MOCR was, not the Golden Skull Spider. Well, we'll have to wait and see....

But yeah, there is no reason why LOSS shouldn't show up again. While the Skull Spiders are (supposedly) defeated, he still has to play some larger role in this other than "I am a spider. I roar." I, personally, am still holding out hope that LOSS is either Makuta or Skull Grinder.

I know that the Toa couldn't brutally smother LoSS into bits, given that BIONICLE is targeted for young children,

but I still can't get over how LoSS is "defeated". Falling into huge depths while unconscious... not how a spider dies.

Yeah, I tend to either shoot them, or set them on fire. But really, I think his "death" is ambiguous for a reason....They made so much hype about him, he appeared in every character bio, he has his own set, and he appears for a 1-minute showdown? Either they just made him as a "filler" set, or he's appearing again.

I would be very surprised if LoSS doesn't join the skull gang in the ancient city so that there are 6 enemies to face off against the 6 Toa.

This, i believe we covered about three vastly seperate topics ranging from reproduction and the reason for transparent pieces to the canonisity of the Golden Skull Spider mask...

Look what i have here guys

It seems that the "Basket glitch" worked and i received two Polybags with one order  (11€ shipping but...worth it :sadnew: )

I know that feel... I know that feel very much...

Not trying to boast, hence the spoiler tags, but yeah... order glitches are cool. Expensive to order, but cool.
