Lord-Vorahk Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 I think we had a conversation exactly like that last week, which spun off into an ongoing rant that got DV and Scarilian suspended. Yes, the contest is a bit... poor... so let's hope we'll get something better for the MoCr. Quote
Dorek Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 I like the idea behind it, but the resulting winners are often a little bit underwhelming. That said, the previous contest had the opposite problem where overcomplicated and unnecessarily grandiose entries were often the ones being rewarded, so I don't mind a bit of simplicity here. Quote
Nekchir Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 I wish I could sue Lego over this competition, I swear. Quote
mysteriouspi Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Is it just me or is this contest, like... really lame? Like, I don't get the idea behind it. The winners don't actually resemble the real masks, and are just sort of vaguely face-shaped sometimes. How is this even judged? They're not supposed to resemble THE masks. They only need to look like an imaginary mask and have a main color correlating to one of the six elements. Quote
mysteriouspi Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 ^Anything can look like a mask. Well...then a basic mask, with eyeholes/visor and maybe something representing a mouth. Technically anything could be a mask, yes, but the purpose of the contest is for masks that kinda look like faces. Objects that kinda look like masks that kinda look like faces. ...yeah. Quote
MakutaOfWar Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Then say that. >_< Just kidding. :P Anyways I've never been one for these contests, although I did make an entry in 2010 regarding Garrdus(?). I thought claiming it was the remnants of Teridax left over in the fallen robot was good too... Quote

I thought claiming it was the remnants of Teridax left over in the fallen robot was good too... That is pretty good. Hell of a lot better than "Random Nynrah Ghost experiment #568". It being Teridax would even justify the model's overwhelming hideousness, since Teridax can appear as a random jumble of parts with a Hau for a face. Quote
MakutaOfWar Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Thanks! It actually hasn't occurred to me until now that they both had Hau's. Hm. Quote

It puzzles me how many people can't understand the idea behind this contest. Personally, I think it's brilliant, and I've been quite impressed with the entries so far. Certainly I think it's nicer than a sweepstakes/raffle that doesn't actually require any sort of creative thinking. Being a winner in this contest means opening your mind and looking at the world around you through a different lens. But unlike a building contest or art contest, the kind of creativity it demands is completely independent of your level of skill or experience. A particularly open-minded and creative kid can win this contest just as easily as a 22-year-old fan with a design degree who's been following BIONICLE since the beginning. Quote

MakutaOfWar Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Dumb question but was Gali's blue ever used in constraction? I never collected blue sets in the early 01-03 days. Quote
Shakar Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 It's completely new to constraction, yes. Pretty rare for System too- it was mostly used for the Alien Conquest line. Quote
Lyichir Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 (edited) It's completely new to constraction, yes. Pretty rare for System too- it was mostly used for the Alien Conquest line. Actually, it was barely used at all in Alien Conquest, only used for minifigure parts and basically nothing else—but since that was one of its first appearances, that's one of the main themes it's known for. As far as actual building elements go, it was more prevalent in Legends of Chima (particularly in the first year's Gorilla and Eagle vehicles) and in Galaxy Squad (for the human "blue faction"). Oddly, despite ostensibly being introduced for Friends alongside colors like Medium Azur and Medium Lavender, it has seen relatively little use in that theme. Edited May 2, 2015 by Lyichir Quote
DraikNova Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 (edited) It was used last year as bone pieces, though. And Queen Beast had a lower jaw in that shade of blue. Edited May 2, 2015 by DraikNova Quote
DraikNova Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Seriously? That's just plain weird. Why introduce a new color when you have a nigh-identical one already used for some parts? Quote
Takanuinuva Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Seriously? That's just plain weird. Why introduce a new color when you have a nigh-identical one already used for some parts? Maybe cause medium azure could be confused with teal. And dark azure is more blue in color. Quote
TheOneVeyronian Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Seriously? That's just plain weird. Why introduce a new color when you have a nigh-identical one already used for some parts? Personally, I would have liked to have seen Gali use Medium Azure purely since CCBS parts already existed in that colour and just would have provided a bit of consistency between old and new. But I think the designers might have gone with Dark Azure as it's a closer colour to original blue, and I think the darker azure works better personally. But yes, it's a bit of an MOC'er's nightmare, since the two azures are so similar, they do clash pretty horribly (in my opinion anyway). Which is why I avoided the medium azure bones in my PoW modification. For those few that might be unsure of how the two colours look together, here's a quick comparison pic Quote
Lyichir Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Seriously? That's just plain weird. Why introduce a new color when you have a nigh-identical one already used for some parts? The two colors were introduced at the same time, in 2012, as different shades of essentially the same color (like Lavender and Medium Lavender, which were also introduced at that time). I personally think the difference is significant, and while the more faded Medium Azur looked neat as a bone color in IFB and previous sets, Dark Azur is much richer and better as a primary color like on Gali. Quote
MakutaOfWar Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Yeah, prior to getting Gali I also thought that she used the IFB azure(pretty hard to tell from review pics) but I'd say I like her blue a lot better as a primary, especially over the blue that we've gotten over the last 4 years. I do hope they use the metru blue again though, as armor that is. Quote
