That was a good episode. They're really building some suspense here for the coming episodes.

Also, I can't decide if Kulta's actually being possessed by Makuta or if Makuta is just giving him orders. The wording wasn't very clear and only said that Makuta was "controlling him," which I feel could go both ways.

Wow. That actually was a pretty good episode. Ekimu's voice is no longer annoying, he really does sound like an old man (though he doesn't act like one  ) and there was at least a bit of explanation about stuff that was going on. Still wondering about the "they call him Skull Grinder" and when we're going to see the Toa ask Ekimu about their memories of him (please LEGO, don't make it an entire year away)

I don't know why but I love Ekimu. He's not your everyday ancient wise dude that only speaks wisdom and knows the right way and stuff. I kind of like him more than Mata Nui to be honest.

I think he's better than Mata Nui because he's more substantial...isn't playing the role of a central deity.

Well, Makuta wears the Mask of Control... so I don't think it's super important what form that takes since we don't quite know the extent of the powers of that mask, or of Makuta's apparent resurrection, which the book was deliberately vague on. It's a mystery; supposed to be unraveled over time. Probably won't even get answered fully next year =P.

I thought the Mask of Control was lost after Ekimu and Makuta duked it out?

But yeah. Doesn't really matter in the long run. I just want to know if Kulta is a singular, conscious entity or if he's being possessed.

The very first animation said that the three masks were scattered across the island. It shows the MoC in an altar on a jungle, but if that's the case, how did it get from the jungle to the City of the Mask Makers?

It's a bit of a plothole but whatever. Maybe we'll get it all clear next year or as the animations draw close to the end.

Plothole? Hardly. I doubt that particular scene was meant to be anything other than symbolic.

Well, they did say "lost" and it seems a lot of people know where the ancient city was =P. But maybe it was a holdover from when the city was still supposed to be located in the jungle region, as opposed to just bordering it.

I mean, if the Mask of Creation was really originally on the pedestal on the other side of the bridge from the Ancient City (where the Toa fought Lord of Skull Spiders), then it doesn't need to be a holdover from anything. After all, the Toa emerged from the jungle to meet at that bridge—if the mask was right there, then the only differences in setting might simply amount to the edge of the jungle being pruned away.

You'd think a jungle would GROW over time as opposed to receding (especially since the books mention that the region was relatively untouched by the cataclysm), but it's really a minor detail anyway. Could just as easily have been for show (although I still wouldn't have described it as "lost" =P).

If it was right across the bridge, then presumably some of the ground around it (containing trees and similar foliage) may have simply collapsed into the chasm. And that's not even getting into the fact that Kulta's minions (which were tasked with finding masks, and presumably DID find the Mask of Creation) might perform a little deforestation of their own to clear a path.

If we're going by the animations, it was Kulta himself who went out and got it (which is a bit odd in and of itself anyway), but it was way more than likely just to emphasize that they were supposed to be hard to obtain. A minor point among minor points.

I'm more curious as to why Kulta would want to actually destroy it; destroying the Golden Masks powers himself up, but isn't Makuta supposed to a "mask hoarder"?

Thanks, but 1.) we've already been discussing those in the 2016 topic, 2.) this is the 2015 topic, and 3.) it's against the rules to post confidential pics here at Eurobricks...

Just a heads up!

Oh ok, thanks for the info!

I have a theory that he wants to destroy Mask of Creation as some sort of revenge on his brother, since Ekimu's masks were more treasured than Makuta's.

In G1 destroying a Legendary Mask like Artakha's MOCr meant releasing its energy, creating havoc. Maybe it's the same here, though I'm not sure how it'd work with Makuta's plans.

Makuta would want to destroy the mask for the same reason as Kulta would end up wearing it to defeat the Toa—he's a pragmatist. The Mask of Creation may be powerful, but it also belonged to his brother Ekimu—preventing Ekimu from regaining his full power takes priority over collecting masks, just like defeating the Toa using the Mask of Creation would take priority in that instance over destroying it once and for all.

There may be other factors in play–perhaps destroying the mask would allow him to channel its energies into something greater, or otherwise further Makuta's plans. But the main reason for trying to destroy the mask seems to be the same reason Makuta had for rebelling in the first place—jealousy and spite.

I'm not really a fan of Ekimu's voice still, but I really do like how the animation's are going story and character-wise.

I nabbed Onua and Korgot a week or two ago, so I now have all of the Toa and five of the protectors, though Kopaka and Lewa are in pieces, as are all of the Protectors except Korgot. I need to start buying dupes.

But he's described as a "Hoarder", which is the opposite of wanting to destroy it. Quite possibly there's something in destroying it that would help him (as there was for the Golden Masks) but the back of the book also states that: "Craving power, the evil Makuta searches for the three mythical masks that will enable him to take over the world". Obviously there's a more nuanced reading of it, but the impression we've been given so far is that he wants to collect the masks for something. I'm just wondering what destroying it would accomplish.

Makuta is hoarding the masks. So attempting to collect the MoCr fits into that goal, it's just that by destroying it he apparently removes all hope of the good guys winning.

Posted

Yeah, he has goals, but he isn't an idiot. Better to destroy a valuable resource if the chances your enemies' will acquire it otherwise are high.

So he didn't have faith in Skull Grinder? =P. I'm probably overthinking it, but it just seems to run counter to his goal of wanting to collect the masks by destroying one. But maybe they'll address that in the future, who knows?

Makuta's objective is to find the Masks of Power. Makuta's goal is to use them to take over Okoto. By stealing the MoCr Makuta fulfills part of his objective, by destroying it he ensures victory over the Toa and his dominion over Okoto and the lands beyond and has fulfilled his goal.

But then that's not really using it, that's just destroying it. I didn't get the impression that his plan was to steal said masks only to destroy them, based on the language used. It does hinder the opposition, obviously, but it also removes it from play for his own personal use, which I'd like to know more about what his plans were for.
