Logan McOwen Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Maybe they're just meant to look cool? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Quote
Shakar Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Dunno, they look really set-like to me. But I can't see them as one of the 3 Beasts, so unless they're 2017 enemies (which seems impossible), I'll just have to accept they're there for show. Quote
Lyichir Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 And I'm just sitting here, still wondering what the heck was the deal with those scorpion-men statues. They're Nilkuu's fursona. Quote
DraikNova Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Or, if you want to ascribe some general worldbuilding purpose to them, they had some religious importance to whoever made the shrine. Quote
Shakar Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 (edited) Ooooh neat. Though Onua got a lot of changes comapred to the other Toa- a rebuilt Titan-tier torso and a lot more trans purple (including HANDS! Darn I want those!). And I wish trans purple could glow so much. It looks really pretty, but since it isn't fluorescent.. I don't see Tera- ahem, any animal this time. (just realized, by the way, that Terak sounds similar to Terra, which is Italian for Earth. Huh...) They're Nilkuu's fursona. Maybe the Elemental Creatures were born from that. Or, if you want to ascribe some general worldbuilding purpose to them, they had some religious importance to whoever made the shrine. That's what I assumed. I wish we could get that sort of villain someday, I imagine the Beasts are a creation of Umarak's or Makuta's, but it would be cool if they were legendary elemental creatures like the Creatures themselves, just malevolent ones. Dorek Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 My favorite art so far, for my favorite set so far. Love it. Took me a second to realize he does actually have his Golden Mask; I think the inconsistency would have bothered me otherwise =P. Quote
DraikNova Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Those purple hands and forearms. I really want those, and like Shakar said, I wish we had a fluorescent version of tr. purple. I wonder if the little glowing spot on the far right is a creature or just Ekimu working. Quote
Bbrink1996 Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Wow, that's beautiful! I love that. Also, it's kind of funny how Gali is standing in a water puddle as if she is afraid to leave the water. :p Quote
Bigger Fish Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 I wonder where Onua goes to the gym? Also, can we start a petition for a Bionicle art book now? I really want more of that art! Quote
Quisoves Pugnat Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 (edited) Charles Atlas torso! Arrrrrgh! That aside, I quite like this. It reminds me a bit of the Mines of Moria. Edited November 12, 2015 by Quisoves Pugnat Quote
GK733 Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 This reminds me, we really need a darker shade of Gold, or copper. If those gold parts on him were as bright as on the actual set it would make this awful. Quote
Logan McOwen Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 I just love how Gali has to be in the one bit of water she could find. Bless. Quote
Tazakk Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 It looks like the activity book has started sneaking out, some people on Amazon have it listed for sale. There's been mention of comics so I'm curious to see the contents. Quote
Voxovan Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 The activity book's been out for a while now in Poland, and if you're pumped up for it, I must disappoint you - there's nothing exciting in it, no new pictures, no new info, and the comics use screencaps from animations. Quote

Well, good to know at least! A little disappointing but not too surprising. Quote
Aanchir Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 That is fairly disappointing, since the comics and stories in the LEGO Ninjago activity books tend to be much more unique. :( Quote
Dorek Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 That is a bummer. Good for people who like that sort of thing in printed form, I guess. Oh well, there's always the graphic novels, which I am super stoked for. Quote
Aanchir Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 I'm sure a lot of us have already seen the set in plenty of detail by now, but if anyone's interested, LEGO recently posted a designer video for Mask Maker vs. Skull Grinder! Quote

Aanchir Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 Well, they at least had the foresight to switch out the poster this time. There's a very real possibility that these videos were filmed earlier than the Mask Maker Challenge videos. Although, having been on the Inside Tour, I ought to mention that the room they tend to use for these designer videos is a very plain white room, and decorations like sets and posters tend to be brought in in specifically to film the videos, so chances are that poster being in that video was no accident. Much more in depth and he actually talks about other things besides the mask, quite a few pronouncing errors but what was really missing was the concept art :( Quote
Dr_Chronos Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 (edited) I'm sure a lot of us have already seen the set in plenty of detail by now, but if anyone's interested, LEGO recently posted a designer video for Mask Maker vs. Skull Grinder! I do wonder why they chose to release this video so late. The possibility of it being filmed earlier yet unreleased until now makes the question even more baffling. While I appreciate that Mr. Ho has taken time out to film these inside looks, it's clear to see he's having a little trouble with the pronunciation of a few words. It might have been better if he were paired with another designer to talk about the set. The most valuable information I gleamed from this is that Grinder's Trans-Orange color scheme was chosen because it contrasts well Ekimu's Trans-Light Blue, and that the combiner model is Grinder's canon powerup form. The rest of the information could have been gained by simply observing the sets or watching reviews. In the future I would like more information about the development of the figures and why certain aspects were chosen. It's nice to see that Lego is interested in giving us an inside look and I can't wait to see more of what the designers have in store. Edit: After rewatching the video, I noticed that when he's talking about the MoCr he mentions the runes on the "crown" are the source of the masks power. This could just be an error. However it's interesting to note that if you count the Nuva Symbols as runes, all of the masks of 2016 have runes inscribed on them. Even the creatures have them! Could magic runes be the source or "mystical link" of the mask's power? And while I don't believe the rules from G1 apply to G2, the Nuva Symbols were the source of the Toa's elemental power. The possibility of it being filmed earlier yet unreleased until now makes the question even more baffling. It might seem late, but when you get right down to it, it's not really that much different from the Toa designer videos. The Toa were released at the beginning of January and the designer video series for them started three months later near the beginning of April. Likewise, the skull creatures were released at the beginning of August and the designer videos are now starting a little over three months later in mid-November. The Toa designer videos were obviously released when they were to tie in with the Bionicle Mask Hunt, which was then ongoing. These ones might instead be meant to generate interest in the run-up to the holiday shopping season. Quote
