I was re-reading the Chat with Greg conversation at the LEGO forum, and my attention was grabbed by this.

I found it really interesting the way he didn't want to say anything about the brains and the fact that any canonical description may be changed in an eventual BIONICLE comeback.

COuld we guess that brain will play an important role in the reboot? Sounds fascinating.

He's said that ever since BIONICLE was canceled; about the Great Beings, about where Matoran come from, etc. It has no particular bearing on the apparent return of BIONICLE, because it's something he's always done.

I know, but this time around the sentence was worded differently.

You see, other times he would have done as you said: "BIONICLE is over, everything about origins of things is not my concern anymore".

But this time he explicitly said that any statement about the brains' material would influence in a way or another future paths of BIONICLE.

Why didn't he say "not my concern"? He just said it was his concern!

Maybe it's just me who wants to see hidden hints in what Greg says, but this is food for thought anyway.

EDIT: in case I wasn't clear, if a reboot happens everything BIONICLE G1 said will be thrown out of the windows, so nobody would care about anything Greg stated. So why didn't he answer, or just said that it was part of the things he wasn't interested in touching anymore?

Good ol' Pokemon retcon: redo everything you say is official to match the current generation/year/wave and if anyone questions the reply is nonexistant.

Maybe he isn't involved in the next series in any way, and so has no idea whether or not they're doing a reboot? He's always avoided touching those topics in one form or another. Maybe the reboot is an alternate universe and the old one is still canon, and that's part of the plot. Maybe it isn't actually a reboot. Maybe they haven't fully mapped things about the year yet at all. Maybe he doesn't want to open a can of worms so close to a new series.

Speaking extremely cynically, maybe Greg just doesn't remember what the story team said about those particular mysteries and is avoiding answering the question.

There's plenty of possibilities, and the only change from his cagey answers back in the day and now is the fact that there appears to be a new series on the way.

Good ol' Pokemon retcon: redo everything you say is official to match the current generation/year/wave and if anyone questions the reply is nonexistant.

Is it weird if I like that? I mean, at a certain point it's going to get unwieldy, but I like that they aren't beholden to certain parts of their "canon" (loose as it is anyway), and it enables the reboots to always feel really fresh.

Yeah, the Pokemon one works for me. SUre, HG/SS overwrites G/S/C in the canon, but it still incorporates all three. No matter your version, Ethan/Lyra still gets Ho-Oh, Lugia, and Suicune.

Of course, I am wondering how much of Emerald will be in Alpha Sapphire and Omega Tahu Ruby, but that's offtopic.

Cut the poor guy a break, it seems every word he says is being over-scrutinised by the fanbase! I'm sure he'll drop more obvious hints if Lego allows him to.

And isn't this hella fun?

Now that you mention that, though, I'd like it if BIONICLE had a greater variety of eye colours than in the late days.

I really want this too. The Toa Metru (the series that really got me into Bionicle) spoiled me I guess. All the Toa having different eye colors was really nice. It was a shame when they started having less and less variety.

Sure. I leave the names of all the colours to my good friend Aanchir. I just think of it as tealish, lol.

As for black not being waterish, it reminds me a bit of the Mahri. Not them as characters or even the sets, but the setting. The deep, dark, depths of water. When I think of water I think of that beautiful light blue of shallow waters on pristine beaches, sure, or of that weird aqua green of lakes or ponds in jungles or forests, but the deep dark depths of the water are black. It sort of makes sense if she ends up black too? I'm just ready for real pictues.

That makes sense, actually. You could even say she represents both sides of water- the clear, beautiful one that brings life, and the dark, destructive force of nature. Gali was always both IMO.

In fact, when I think of it, I realize bright blue was never that suited to represent water. I think Hahli was the Toa who did that best, in both forms: I always thought the white in her Inika form represented sea foam (especially when mixed with blue on her two-toned leg and foot pieces), while Hahli Mahri's lime was a reference to seaweed.

It's kinda similar to Onua. I see the black as the symbol of the darkness of the caves, while the tr. purple is reminiscent of the beautiful crystals found deep down. That's what Toa (without going overboard *coughtheglatoriancough*) should be IMO- living representation of their elements, in subtle and charming ways.

And speaking of that, I like that Tahu has blue eyes now. The pink ones from 2001-2002 would've been awesome, but I guess that wasn't possible. Tr. reddish orange would have provided little to no contrast, and you don't even know how sick I am to see fire characters with tr. lime eyes.

I can't tell which eye colours the Toa have, Tahu clearly has blue eyes, Kopaka's are similar, Onua's seem purple, while the other three are next to impossible to tell.

People complain about fairies being in ORAS.

On the bright side of bionicle coming back, I have lots of spares to use. on the downside, I may have to give away my HFparts

Posted

Why would you give your HF parts away? The new sets are going to keep using the HF building system. I'd suggest you to keep them for your future MOCs.

I don't know if this means anything but I had just started watching the Ninjago pilot episodes, and noticed that the ninja were called "master of (fire, lightning, etc)". It's the same in the supposed leaked set names for Bionicle. Could this mean anything?

I always liked that about Hahli's Toa sets. Even if the parts wouldn't be great for reuse, I also really liked the blended parts her Inika form had and would like to see a few shells like that. Anyway, I think that both Gali and the Water Defender have white in their color schemes, which I am happy to see (sea?) return.

And as for the eye colors, Lewa's look green to me. I can't make out Pohatu or Gali's, but I would guess that at least one of them would have orange or reddish eyes, since none of the others seem to.

I love the propellers on the back of the water defender makes it look like an old timey diver.

I initially thought Onua's eye were dark green, but they look more purple now that people mention it. I miss the days of varied eye colour too. My mocs that use metru heads are severely lacking in variation as a result of me not getting properly into Bionicle until 2006.

Warning. The following post contains lunatic rants and absurd, messed up ideas that seriously threaten what you know and love about BIONICLE canon. Please read at your own risk.

Man, I looked it up on BS01 and I forgot just how messed up the whole Earth vs Stone/Rock vs Sand ordeal was. I get what they did in 2009 but IMO Lewa has to stay as the Toa of Air, and the same goes for the Air element in general. It's a unique element that can't be confused for anything else, compared to how similar to eachother the 3 elements I mentioned are (hint: way too much).

Sure, the desert area is fascinating (Po-Wahi was, at least), but I feel Pohatu is the one who should change, not Lewa. I know it sounds like heresy buut- am I the only one who is actually thinking of changing their mind-canon so that Pohatu is the Toa of...the Green/Flora/Plants? I know I know, it sounds absurd, but aren't trees brown? I feel it could work. :look:

Posted

I sort of agree here. Stone and earth as different elements never made much sense, and lack of air would be really odd. But on the other hand, changing Pohatu's color scheme would be lot more in conflict with the classic-reboot idea than changing Lewa's element without altering his colors. Sure, Pohatu's brown could have someting to do with trees, but it wouldn't work without green.

I don't know why people still think this is a reboot. The inclusion of the Defenders, the golden armour, Skull Spider and the jungle backgrounds heavily implies that this is a continuation (though one that is set in the future of the story to separate it from the serials).

Mind you, I don't really want Lego to change established elements like that (and it's not going to happen, Pohatu is clearly in a desert setting in the box art). Mine is just a farout idea I might use in my own mind canon. I agree his colours would need to be slightly tweaked- by adding some green perhaps.

Those things don't confirm reboot nor deny it. But I would prefer a continuation. From whatever point in the future. I just want it to be connected. To know that all that happened, but any of it is not necessary to know when getting in the story. Start of the fan story "Nova Orbis" http://nickinamerica.deviantart.com/art/Bionicle-Nova-Orbis-Introduction-419621319 is what would fit perfectly in the prologue of the new story if it would include a bit of Great Beings. As if it's a continuation possibly Great Beings are large part of the new story.

Well, there happen to be nuva symbols on the pedestal for the mask, not to mention they all have some golden armour - meaning Lewa got out of dinosaur hell, and the fact that they all have golden armor doesn't make any sense for a continuation - because Tahu had all of it and also, the "big baddie" teridax is dead, and the 3 planets were combined, and the "makutas" are almost all dead, so in all a continuation means retconing a lot of story. Also, those red eyes in the corner of the display stand look like teridax.

There aren't any Nuva symbols on that pedestal :l

Ahh, sorry about that! I was half asleep after 2 sleepless 24-hour days when I saw that pic first. It appears it is just runes.

I don't understand how any of those imply a continuation; explicit lack of using any previous gen associated terms (barring the Toa names), generic environments that can be from anywhere, and motifs that aren't from any particular era of the story, but serve as recognizable hallmarks regardless.

Teridax and the Makuta species don't have to return for Bionicle to succeed. There are countless other villains I can think of, most of which have red eyes just like in that picture - TSO, the Skrall, Skakdi, Barraki, Marendar etc. If I had to argue I'd say that the smooth front of the helmet that the red eyes belongs to looks most like a Skrall. Plus, what's to stop them from introducing new villains, like they have done every other year?

And sure, Spherus Magna was reformed, but most of the planet is still untouched upon by story (for example the entirety of Bota Magna).

They don't imply a reboot either. If that's the direction TLC wanted to take, they'd bring it back to basics and make sets with CCBS that closely resemble the 2001 era. Literally the only similarities to 2001 that is in the picture is the jungle theme and the names of the original six Toa. I don't remember the Matoran or Turaga being almost as big as the Toa themselves, nor do I remember golden armour or a special, as-of-yet unknown mask.
