My my, aren't we picky. :P

There really haven't been any Viking BLOCKBUSTERS, but there was Prince Valiant in 1997 and a retelling of Beowulf in 1999.

What about Erik the Viking? That came out in 1989 and that was a great Viking movie. WASN'T IT???

By blockbuster, I meant "popular" or movies that were a big hit and sadly, I've never heard of those movies.

Speaking of movies, have any of you seen that 2-part series, Supervolcanoes? It was originally a BBC production but since I don't get BBC, I downloaded the movie and I was amazed at the quality for a TV movie.

But the thing is, I'm not much of a fan of old movies, other than Jurassic Park and Star Wars, that's why I said I like Pirates of the Caribbean and not older movies but there aren't any fairly recent (1998+) blockbuster movies centred around the Vikings.
It was good, but not in the 'recent' timeframe he was looking for.

Isn't 1989 classified as 1988+ ???

Somebody doesn't know how to count... :P

I said 1998, not 1988. See the 8 comes BEFORE the 9.

You learn something new each day.

Suddenly my dreams of becoming a mathematician were shattered! Or maybe that's an indication I should indeed get some sleep instead of sitting up all night and post messages...

Amusingly enough, The Thirtenth Warrior is an adaptation of Beowulf.  As movies go, its quite entertaining, and the Vikings in it are very well done.

Akkh

It's interesting. I'll have to read Eaters of the Dead now, I've been putting off that Crichton book for a while.

EDIT: Phes, that's the only one with Viking in its name, but I always thought that this was the most Viking-ish ship in existence right now:

mister phes,

While I find great value in BOTH Pirate and the new Viking sets, I cast my vote for the Vikings. For rather selfish reasons though, as I plan on obtaining Viking sets for the sole purposes of plundering the sets of special and unique parts that will integrate perfectly with my bionicle mocs. ;)

I voted for Pirates of the Carribbean. REASON: Pirates have been one of Lego's best historic themes and a future pirate theme gives the opportunity to add to your existing models. I predict that Vikings will be a short lived theme (somewhat like Western in duration with limited sets). Vikings just doesn't seem to offer the opportunity to add many sets to the line or sub-themes later. Great for a collection; however, if limited.

Also, Pirates of the Caribbean was a much better movie than the 13th Warrior. In fact, I don't recall a really good viking movie ever. This adds appeal to pirates. And lastly, pirates provide a great deal of mystery and imagination with burried treasure, jungle adventures, and tales of marauding pirates. Vikings just doesn't have the same appeal.

Now if another theme like Sinbad or Greek Mythology is introduced, this may give Pirates a run for the money!

I am confident, once more, that we will have a new pirates line ;)

Why you ask? because of movies. Pirate of the carabbeans "Dead Man's chest" is due in 2006 :) . It is actually being shot.

Here is a brief plot summary found on the net at imdb: "Once again thrown into the world of the supernatural, Captain Jack Sparrow finds out that he owes a blood debt to the legendary Davey Jones, Captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman. With time running out, Jack must find a way out of his debt or else be doomed to eternal damnation and servitude in the afterlife. And as if this weren't enough, the Captain's problems manage to wreck the wedding plans of a certain Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, who are forced to join Jack on yet another misadventure" (thanks Kelli for the summary).

Also, Pirates of the Carrabeans 3 is in pre-production ;)

2 movies in production ;) , so TLC must release a new pirate line ;)

Yes they should. But will they have the sense? Not only because of those two movies, but from my observation that Pirates seem to be the "in thing" these days. Best Block realise this and released a Pirate ghost ship and some other Pirate ship last year (or the year before).

Instead of a 4+ Pirate theme why couldn't have Lego made a creepy Ghost Pirate sub-theme with a Ghost Ship, Hideout, Raft, Cave, etc? They could have used those scary skeleton mini-figures and made use of the new creatures like bats, spiders, etc. that weren't around in the original Pirate theme.

But alas, no...

That would be sweet ;)

Here is something I don't undersatand: why is it antinomic of having a younger pirate line with a regular system pirate line???

Look at Ferrari sets, they are going through Duplo, Systems and Technics...

Or what about Castle for that matter? I'm looking at the 2004 Lego catalogue right this very moment and on page 18 there are Duplo Castle sets! Then on pages 44-47 are the Knights Kingdom sets!

That just makes the 4+ Pirate theme all the more insulting!

Posted

Also the Duplo Castle sets are really good, so why TLC, why???????

Give a great pirate line and not that insulting kiddo stuff (Oops I should not complain that much ;) ).

Posted

Sure, why not ;)

However, this would have been possible with a younger pirate line (like Duplo...) and probably not with a 4+ line.

Who knows?

One thing for sure, Pirates will always be a major theme loved by AFOLs & KFOLs so we gotta have a new line sometimes (2006 or 2007) ;) Always nice to stay optimist :)

Yes an optimistic attitude is much healthier than a pessimistic one. Although waiting and waiting might get you disheartened.

I remember in 2003 when I heard there was going to be a new Pirate theme I was excited. I remember a few months later when I saw pictures of the new Pirate theme I was very sceptical. I remember when I actually saw the new Pirate theme I was very disasppointed.

Although I'm seeing the postive side in the form of potential MOCs their elements would fit into.

Very true but NOT at regular price ;)

I will see if they are on sale because there quite interesting pieces and parts that really can be usefull ;)

And you are also right: lets wait the end of the year and see what 2006 will offer us. So far 2005 is a fantastic lego year *satis* (a lot of SW, nice KK2, Vikings, City........and DINOs ;) ).
