Huh, is that so? Well, I can agree, alot of Americas' youth use 'i luv u' and ' u r awsom'. That type of wording. I hate it X-D . But please, don't bring down other countries if you're not from it.

Pirates beat Vikings! Arrrrr!

Errrr... Yeah... Explain "mom" to me... Why did it such a simple word need to be changed from "mum"?

And the bit that gets me half the Americans I've heard pronounce it "mom" and the other half "mum" with a distinct "u" in the middle. Why is there no consistency?

Did you buy all the Viking sets?

The United States is such a large a diverse country that there are definitely different dialects and accents in the US. East Coast and West coast, north and south, Midwest, New England... all have there own things. Some call soft drinks "pop" while other say "soda" and even others call every kind of soft drink a "coke", some say "mom" some say "mum", some say "dad" some say "papa" and some say "pa" for father... it is all regional. We say "pop," "mom" and "dad" in Minnesota, but even as close as eastern Wisconsin and Michigan it becomes "soda" and "papa". That is just how it is.

The US did attempt to differentiate themselves from England with some of their spellings following the American revolutionary war... It was a very conscious effort at first, but now it is just how it has always been. Part of the fallout from this attempt to be non-British is the reason Americans spell the following words differently than other English speaking countries... "color", "neighbor", "gray", and "check".

As a result of both time, culture, and perhaps even design to be seen as different, an "American English" has developed, but even within the united States, there are certainly dialects. I sometimes can't even understand everything a person from the South might say, I guess I am just not used to the "Southern drawl"!

As for the poll... I obviously voted long ago for the Pirates, so Pirates ON!

Thanks for that explaination Mr ZCerberus... It seems like I asked that question months ago.

The sudden "it's because Americans are lazy" bit that caught my attention!

And because I am much more diligent in the the MOC forum.

do the math 4 example a viking....viking.jpg V.S. 83px-DFRLego_003.jpg ......the viking doesint even know how to put his helmet on straight...*sad* *sad* *sad*

LOL, that's the best justification I've heard so far :-P .

I voted for the pirates too. That doesn't mean the vikings are bad sets but one of the reasons is that I grew up with Red Beard... :)

Why is it being restricted to Pirates of the Carribean and not simply just pirates of the discovery age period? Are we trying to emmulate the actual POTC franchise in this argument or just define the exact geography of pirates?

I haven't voted because despite reading the threads concerned I still can't see what the debate is really about, maybe it's these long blonde locks of mine but it the thing has nothing to do with lego at all then there really isn't a basis for comparison at all, it's just two entities in history, pirates being something highly connotative as pirates have been around since the days of the pharoahs right up 'til now. Vikings in addition to living a strongly piratical way of life were an established Nordic culture for a good few centuries.

Being as the two concepts aren't on the same playing field I just can't endorse the debate. If we were arguing who is better vikings or phoenicians for example that would make some sense to me. The Carribean thing really has me scratching the brains in my butt for an anthropoligial answer...

Anyway for what it's worth all vikings and all pirates are smelly, rancid sods in bad need of a bath and the justice of the Royal Navy!

I voted none, as the entire Pirates of the Carribean franchise was a big rip-off with lousy films in which Johnny Depp had the job of softening the blow for the public. Which I assume he did remarkebly well apparently. And Vikings (except in an historical context) do not interest me either.

That dialect thing is the same in every country. Every country has its regions and provinces/states where people tend to speak slightly different or completely different. Sometimes even so much you're wondering if it's still your own language. I do not know about the U.S. but here most dialects have their own unique vocabulary (and grammar + spelling at times) used nowhere else. And now attempts are made in publishing unige dialect dictionaries. One dialect that appears to be dying out is the West-Flemish French in French-Flanders which Louis XIV (that mean brute) took from us. French and Flemish (or rather Dutch) have mixed to form a unique language now only still used by a few after 300 years.

Anyway, just felt like mentioning that, a bit of history, world knowledge and such are never out of place. *sweet*

Pirates of the Caribbean vs. Vikings?! I predict that some horn-headed men will be yelling "MEGABLOCKS" when they realize that they're pitted against Pirates of the Caribbean! Pirates, duh!

Mmm, I didn't see the Caribbean Vikings option... but I digress.

I vote Vikings. Why?

1: The second and third PotC films stank :{

2: Vikings were simply pirates of middle era Scandinavia anyway

3: Vikings are made of epic and badass. Pirates are cool, but come on. Vikings have HORNED HELMENTS and their own genre of metal music.

Yeah, confusing... :pir_wacko:

What's up with that? Did it use to say that?

I don't think so.

Maybe a Pirate MOD can change it to something better. :pir-wink:

Phredit:

This title works much better i think.

Poll: Pirates of the Caribbean vs Vikings
And I'm sure it was all too common for there to be Krakens and undead demon squid pirate captains? :pir-tongue:

Ya got me there! :pir-laugh:

Thinking of it like that, POTC is a lot less realistic than horny vikings.
