That's gonna have a lot of suspension travel!

Am I the only one that thinks that having the steering pivot point one stud after the U joint's pivot point is going to cause some problems?

I am thinking exactly the same. I don't think it'll work well. Anyway, it'll harm the universal joint. It's nice to see those big tyres in a moc, they're perfect for a monster truck. Using a planetary gear hub at every wheel will reduce the torsion in the universal joint. I killed one of them by building a truck with those tyres and big lego rc-motors without planetary gear hubs.

The U joint works totally fine, because the 8 tooth gear IS NOT attached inside the turntable and acts like a second CV joint. It steers and drives fine at an angle, I used same technique in the 8x8 tatra few years ago.

Thanks for the information, now it is clear to me why you are one stud offset to the centre of the cardan joint.

Do you want to steer with a servo motor or with a m motor? I can't wait to see this monster truck in action.

I'm not sure yet how to power it... I can only use max of 4 motors...

So I can either use:

1 XL for all wheel drive

1 motor for steering

1 for gearbox

and one remains for a fourth function

Or maybe use:

2XL for drive, independent front and rear wheel drive

1 motor for steering

1 for gearbox

Not sure yet... Any ideas?

Than the gerbox might switch between independet and normal F and R wheel drive ;)

Looking forward to see the progress ;)

Adjustable suspension?

or

4 wheel steering. My first idea was to build a model that has 4 wheel steering with 3 or 4 modes (normal/rear/crab/all). That would be quite tricky to operate with the normal PF system but with SBrick and a custom phone application it would be easy to operate. I ditched the idea because I have never build an RC off-roader before.

I suggest making the fourth function winches for reducing the ground clearance (lowering center of gravity) like you find on some real crawlers and some monster trucks.

It would also be realistic with independent front and rear steering. Monster trucks often has a 3 position rear steering and a progressive front steering.

A geared down buggy motor would solve you drive motor needs...

Lookin' good, but just so you know, you could have more than one drive motor, as long as they are hooked up to the same channel. I'd also go for adjustable suspension, as not many monster trucks have winches.

My argument against a winch that it's half manual (you have to place the hook by hand), and one advantage of an SBrick is that it has much bigger range than IR, so I see no point of a manual feature.

zblj if you use 2 XL for driving it counts like 1 function cos you will use only 1 output!

I think you can do:

1 output for driving

1 output for steering

1 output for the gearbox

1 output for a middle differential lock! So it switches from 2wheel drive to 4wheel drive

i think sbrick is able To have 2 XL motors at the same output, mind It ;) And I also think that an adjustable suspension system isn't for this truck as a selection for the stering system, you should make a 4 speed gearbox or a preload system (that col look like The adjusting one but isn't) :3

would be great to have a motorised function for the stiffness of the suspension ...

i don't think its been done before - accidentally maybe by moving the angle of the shocks in and out but usuall people do this for ground clearance only

winches are so last year....

Here's the current progress:

The gearbox and steering are installed.

Only thing bothering me is the fact there is quite some friction in the planetary gears, so the truck struggles in high gear.

Fourt function will be a secret for now

A winch that pull all the shocks using a string that works parallely with it could work

i'm waiting To see The other function Zblj :3
