Yeah, I know that it is a discussion forum. And we got the leaks 6 months ahead of release, so obviously we're going to run out of things to discuss while we wait half a year for the release. But I don't think filling page after page with the same 3 or 4 guys endlessly whining about how since they don't like it, LEGO shouldn't make this series is the answer to our discussion problems. I never understand that about this forum. We all love the same hobby for different reasons, but a whole slew of people here feel like the hobby should cater exclusively to how they love it, and anyone who doesn't fall in line is dumb or wrong or not as good a FOL as them.

I don't know why I even try to participate in discussions I don't immediately agree with, since it feels like most of you are just looking for an echo chamber.

Problem most people seem not to understand is: there is a BIG difference between I don't like this and LEGO shouldn't produce this.

I don't like this: this set is not appealing to me, but since it may appeal someone else, it is ok.

LEGO shouldn't produce this: this set has violence, sex, gore, or some other concepts that are not fitting with the LEGO brand.

Collectible series example:

I don't like this: applies to most female minifigures to me, like female cyclops from series 13

LEGO shouldn't produce this: the rumored series 13 army man which was obviously a fake since thanksGod LEGO doesn't produce such.

I don't understand why people like this series. the monsters look really bad with the exception of the tiger girl as she is quite good. I can understand why kids will like it , but what about us, what if we don't like the series, then what do we do?

And I don't understand why people don't like the series. The monsters look great, even better if you don't already have the S4 monster.

If you don't like the series, then don't buy it. Same as anything else in life.

If you are a completist that buys them only to make sure you have every one, then you have to buy them, or stop being a completist. After all, this is a numbered series and cannot be skipped like Simpsons or TLM or Team GB. But if that is your situation, then I'm willing to bet that you already have some figures that you don't really like, but got them anyway to be complete.

That's a good point, but several complaints were made, begging LEGO to cancel the series even though it's obviously not going to happen.

It is rare for me to keep CMF figs exactly the way they are, nor am I an army builder. I also missed out on much of the early series and Monster Fighters. This theme promises lost of parts I can use in addition to the upcoming Scooby Doo theme. I will try to get the ones that interest me, ignore the ones that don't, and not complain (much) when Lego falls short of my expectations.

I don't really like this series much will pick up 2 or 3 at most but I like it when I don't like something as it saves me a bit of money which is good as there is a lot I like.

I can understand why completest would not like it but we have had this problem with Lego movie and Simpsons as well and its kind of like being an ideas completest you might have to buy something you have no interest in at all.

I just hope the black cat looks normal, without any green spooky eyes or some shit like that, and that will make at least 1 figure I could buy.

That's why I can't support the completionist attitude, because when you're compulsed to buy something you don't want, it just ends up being a waste of money. That's why I gave up on completing series long ago; I couldn't justify completing series when I didn't like some of the figures.

I just hope the black cat looks normal, without any green spooky eyes or some shit like that, and that will make at least 1 figure I could buy.

It clearly has yellow eyes. No need to worry.

Having been keeping up with CMF series so far, I don't really collect all CMFs and I never feel obliged to. Every series has highs and lows, and series 14 is not an exception to me. I'm really excited to get some Halloween costumes.

In the case that some people don't like a ceartain theme, yes, LEGO does put all eggs in the same basket. I'd doubt LEGO's strategy but don't deny that there are nice figures in the results

I don't see that many rehashes. I see transformations of the characters into monster forms, but not rehashes. Sure the witch, and the (rock) monster are rehashes, the zombie business man is probably a rehash too, but the zombie cheerleader, pirate, etc are not rehashes to me.

Agreed....

The Monster, Mad Scientist, Witch, Zombie(s), Werewolf, and Lady Vampire have all been done before at least once. But I feel like these characters are unique enough to make them less "rehashes" and more "reimaginings"

Agreed....

I guess it depends on what one considers a "rehash." As long as they give us something truly different or unique, I don't consider it a rehash (despite the fact it may imply they are running out of new and original ideas).

is the wolfman a rehash? It's a completely different style wolfman than what was released before, and despite the fact that the head piece is similar to non-cmf wolfmen, that the figure is an evolution of an existing cmf figure makes it interesting and compelling to me. If you make a vignette (or a series) to tell a story, that figure is perfect.

I also don't consider a figure like the witch or scientist to be rehashes because they are entirely different than what's been released before. That doesn't mean I like them... I'm one of the nay-sayers on this series (but in the "I probably won't get a lot of them" vein, not the "they shouldn't do this because I don't like it" vein).

Yes, we've had zombies, and we've had cheerleaders... now we have a zombie cheerleader. I don't like the expression on her face - it ruins the entire figure's usefulness in a Z.A. MOC. But it's not a rehash, it's an evolution.

Even the "rock" monster" has a different expression and different clothes. It doesn't matter I've already done my "monsters of rock" MOC, I don't like this figure at all. Of all the figures, it's the most "re-hashiest," but it's still unique.

How many policemen are they going to give us? Were they rehashes? They were all completely different types that serve different purposes in a MOC.

Anyway, I'm not giving a lot of love for this series, but I do understand what TLG is trying to do, and I also realize I'm not the target audience. Shrug and move on.

I think I understand why some people really hate this S-14; CMF series was all about diversity, where you can get some never before released minifig concepts, like Greek mythology figs or Roman soldiers and such, each series had many chances you might get at least one minifig you really wanted which belongs to a theme or world LEGO might not produce as regular sets, and we only get two or three chances per year for that to happen.

Now this series is all about only one theme, so anyone who’s not that into Halloween stuff was let down, for instead of the diversity that satisfies most tastes, we got an entire release that basically caters to only one taste.

It becomes even worse when the second chance is also dedicated to one theme, which makes it an entire year of no diversity.

So if you’re not too crazy about Halloween, or you’re also not too crazy about The Simpsons, you got yourself another year of waiting ahead of you till they decide to make another diverse series… if they decide to continue with CMF at all… and that’s understandably frustrating.

Posted

I agree. But with the regular diverse series, we've gotten quite a few repeats or "rehashes", so complaining about it here isn't quite fair. We've had several skaters and aliens, for one. And then there are the Dummies, Fitness Instructors, etc. I think the level of complaints here is only because there is such a large amount of repeat characters here instead of one or two per series. But again, I wouldn't be so enthused about a Pirates or Western series, so I understand how the theme makes people unhappy, too. I think it's just an opportune time to release a Halloween series, since another spooky theme will be on the market at the same time before Halloween.

Posted

Look, I'm not saying no one should dislike the series, and I can easily see how people would feel let down that this is what LEGO is producing instead of their usual mixed-theme series. I skipped out on a couple of series entirely because there weren't any in them that I liked. But I didn't wander into the Series 5 thread and wail about how LEGO was committing an atrocious business decision by doing something I didn't like, and I didn't insinuate that anyone who bought Simpsons Series 1 was possessing bad taste or a child. And I sure as heck didn't do it 3 times a page for 12 pages. We can like and dislike different stuff without being venomous about it, and even though we see ourselves as their lifeblood, LEGO is not restricted to providing for the tastes of a very, very narrow band of their consumer-base.

Instead of being upset about how much you're not getting, try thinking of all the money you're saving. Instead of being upset that they didn't make a series you like, maybe think of fun things to do with the ones they already made that you enjoy. Instead of whining about how you don't understand how anyone can like a particular product, maybe talk about the ones you do like.

Stop being so whiny and negative! You'd think you wouldn't need to hear that from a guy whose username amounts to "Black Glass Heart", but whatever.

Well... I like mythology and history CMF and I already had a 1 year hiatus between Series 11 and Series 12, and now another 1 year hiatus between Series 13 and whatever is going to happen after Series 14... while the Monsters/Horror fans have got Monster Fighters, Scooby Doo, the monsters on CMF so far and now.... an entire series.

But the frustration comes with the repetitiveness of the minifigures. I mean, we already got:

3 Crazy Scientist: 1 Studios + 1 Monster Fighters +1 CMF S4

4 Werewolf: 1 Studios + 1 Monster Fighters + 1 Harry Potter + 1 CMF S4

4 Monster: 1 Studios + 2 Monster Fighters + 1 CMF S4

5 Zombie: 3 Monster Fighters + 1 Scooby Doo + 1 CMF S1

So, these will be the the 4th Crazy Scientist, the 5th Werewolf, the 5th Monster and the 6th Zombie

How could someone find appealing to get the n-th incarnation of an already seen minifigure? It's beyond my understanding :sadnew:

But the Harry Potter witches were hardly fairytale/Halloween witches. So they don't really count.

I see your point, but I disagree. Some people love monsters (I'm guilty) and would love more of them (possibly to populate a huge monster party). And as I've said before, these ones are sufficiently different from previous monster minifigures of the same types, so putting them all together (CMF S1-12, MF, Studios, Scooby, and CMF S14) wouldn't look like a group of clones. In fact, the monster minifigures that come closest to being true rehashes of previous ones are the MF ones! From behind, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the S2 Vampire and Lord Vampyre. I understand, the repeated concepts can be a turnoff, but most of the S14 figs we've seen bear little resemblance to the previous CMF monsters, the MF monsters, and the Scooby-Doo monsters, which I think is an achievement considering how many monsters we have by now.

I think I have the basic arguments here. Perhaps this will clarify the opinions on both sides and prevent any "I can't see why X likes/dislikes the series!" remarks.:

So why people would want these?

1. Because these monsters look different enough from previous ones and add diversity to the monster archetypes they've done before.

2. The consumer of S14 has missed out on previous monster minfigures, and this series offers a second chance to get a witch or zombie (for example).

3. Because the series contains humorous monsterized characters from previous series.

Why not?

1. The series is themed and alientates fans of other themes or the assorted series.

2. The characters seem unoriginal and retread on characters done too many times before.

3. The designs themselves are too lighthearted or unappealing compared to previous versions.

Alright, you win. Keep crying! It's starting to get funny again. Maybe if you cry hard enough and loud enough LEGO will swoop in and make a special theme just for you, and then someone else can come whine about it.

As mentioned earlier, some of us are just out of our dark ages. Even though MF was out in 2012 if you missed it, it can be quite discouraging to look at market prices now. And how long ago was studio?

Some themes regularly get repeats and reboots of the same characters - look at superheroes and Star Wars. Overall, I think the minifigs are improving over time. A few of the early SW and Harry Potter faces are really bland. I'm looking forward to 14 and will probably get most of the figs I'm hoping it won't be too difficult to feel what's what. Guess we'll see what some of the accessories are.

Posted

Yeah... again, not a fan of this series (but Halloween is absolutely my favorite holiday, so I don't think that's it), but if we were getting the exact same things, I could see the complaint, but we're not.

What's a Zombie Apocalypse with 100 of the exact same zombie? Diversity is good... you don't want 5 police officers in your LEGO city that all look identical, you don't want 5 identical child figures walking down the LEGO street with 5 identical moms or dads, or a dozen peasants in your castle MOC that are all the same. Everyone seems to go nuts over a figure because it's got new print on the legs, or some really (IMO) minor little detail-ly things... but when you get diversity for monsters it's just "rehashes." I think having several wolf-men is great for MOCs, especially given their continuity... one bites the lumber jack, the lumber jack becomes a werewolf... perfect. Zombie Apocalypses need many varied zombies; different crazy/mad scientists fit better in different MOCs...

Yes, I'd like to see more new things, more mythology and historical figures... I think that's part of the problem, is we have these threads where we talk about things like what we really want in a series, and are then doubly disappointed when the next series is actually nothing like what we were hoping for.

I think why I'm disappointed is that I wanted more "serious" figures... on one hand it's laughable because, hey, it's minifigures! And it's for kids, not me... but if I want variety in witches, I don't want a cartoony kid dressed as a witch, I want another Macbeth witch.

About the only one that I think is a valid complaint is Frankenstein's monster, because there's only one. Having more than one seems pointless. Having one making a silly face seems pointless. But that's just me. Like I said before, shrug and move on. Of course, like the post above mine says... it's easy for me to be annoyed at Frankenstein's monster because I already have one (and one without a silly, pointless expression).

Posted

I think there are difference between "counterparts" and real "rehashes". Cunterparts are always welcome. Some using the same mold with minor changes don't interest me too much. The Zombie Cheerleader is better than the Red Cheerleader in many aspects. The scientist is obviously not, too. Isn't it just good to see people from Research Institute have different personalities rather than just one kind of stereotyical scientist army there?

And in the most passive aspect, the last rule of CMF series is that reintroducing characters help kids getting the minifigures from earlier series they couldn't get. Although in this case, I'm not sure if kids are able to obtain the previous Monster Fighters figures in this year.

Posted

The Venus fly trap / Little shop of horrors minifig is by far the coolest. The skeleton has got to be a fake, thats well below the standard of a LEGO figure, it can't be real...! ... can it?

You group all of the werewolves together as if they are the same minifigure. Same with the zombies. Now think of it from the point of view of someone that doesn't like historical CMFs.

Spartan, Roman Soldier, Roman Commander, Hun, Egyptian Warrior. That's 5 "ancient warriors", just rehashes of each other. I like historical CMFs, so I can appreciate the differences, but to someone that doesn't they are just rehashes, like all the werewolves and zombies are just rehashes to you.

That poses an interesting but depressing point. Although I think it's unfair to use the ancient army builders, because fundamentally, they're not the same concepts.

I think the complaints are coming, not because the figs are redesigns of previous characters, but because they're the fourth or fifth versions of monster characters we've gotten versions of before. If these were the second versions of the monsters, no complaints. But the CMFs before, Studios, Monster Fighters, and Scooby-Doo have made these seem redundant, no matter how different they look.

Here, we're getting a boatload of counterparts, but everyone's calling them rehashes based on the fact that the same concepts were used for the 4th/5th time. But if these were spaced out across series 14-20 or something, there would be fewer complaints, and everyone would call them neat little takes on previous characters. They're all in one series, though, and that attracts more dislike than separate figs.

Posted

The rehashes don't bother me. I agree with MAB on that. I enjoyed the first CMF witch and I don't hate this one. It just doesn't appeal to me. The businessman and cheerleader zombies are really the best part of this series for me.

It is just that this series does not appear to be very versatile. I had hoped for a detailed Gothic print on some minifigures such as a Headless Horseman. I could swap out heads and add him to a Victorian scene or leave him for a Halloween MOC.

Regular CMF series generally has some goofy and some more serious minifigs. This one just seems to have goofy ones.

Can we have CMF Series 15 now?
