Darkdragon Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Why the Mansion gets so much hate??This set is the one I'm more excited to buy. I don't know, I love the set and think it's a wonderful build. Maybe people are just upset that you "have" to buy it to get the full gang. Quote
Pulp Detective Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 (edited) I don't know, I love the set and think it's a wonderful build. Maybe people are just upset that you "have" to buy it to get the full gang. That's a dumb reason, since Lego has applied this kind of strategy on other themes many times in the past,Star Wars comes to mind. And if not they can simply buy Velma separately. Captain Nemo Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 I don't know, I love the set and think it's a wonderful build. Maybe people are just upset that you "have" to buy it to get the full gang. I wouldn't be surprised by that. Granted I'm getting the feeling that a lot of the negativity steams from people who don't even own the sets... Regardless, I think that the Mansion is arguably the best set of the wave. The Mystery Machine conceivably edges it out due to it's superb design and nostalgic value, but as a whole I think the Mansion is nearly perfect. It has play value too--which I don't really think warrants it's negative views because they don't at all dampen it's exterior appearance. That being said, I'm really happy that Lego actually went the route of a full fledged theme (even if it ends up being just one wave), rather than settling for one set. Let's be honest, Scooby-Doo could have been completed with one set, the Mystery Machine (had it included the whole gang) ala Ghostbusters or Back to the Future. The fact that we even got more sets, plus monsters, is simply awesome. Quote

I think they did a great job and overall it's a low total cost to buy the whole theme compared to other licenced themes. I'm a happy camper, is what I'm trying to say. Quote
kelceycoe Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 (edited) Read my posts a couple back to see the tidbits I grabbed from the interview and the Blocks magazine review. The hate for the mansion, according to the review, at least the For/Against and numerical score they gave the sets, I'll outline them all below. If you want to read the interview or reviews in full the magazine is only $7.99 digitally so go buy it. Mystery Mansion For: - Velma to complete the gang. - Spooky details bring out dilapidated condition of mansion. Against: - Minimal play features - Lack of variety with other Mystery Inc. members - Much of the dilapidated effect is through stickers Score Metrics: Build: 10/20 Playability: 4/20 Minifigures: 11/20 Price: 12/20 Collectibility: 15/20 Total: 52/100 Haunted Lighthouse For: - Great structure and landscaping - Interesting villains - Speedboat is colored varied but still keeps with the theme. Against: - Daphne variant would have made the set more desirable - The review itself did state disappointment with including a monster with no basis (although like I said in my post detailing the 22 minuted animated LEGO Scooby special, it is loosely based on the Sea Demon/Gilly Stern, based on a Hamlet character) Score Metrics: Build: 19/20 Playability: 20/20 Minifigures: 19/20 Price: 16/20 Collectibility: 16/20 Total: 90/100 Mummy Museum Mystery For: -Cheap way to get the two main characters. - Great details although achieved through stickers Against: - Mummy isn't a very inspired villain Score Metrics: Build: 13/20 Playability: 16/20 Minifigures: 15/20 Price: 16/20 Collectibility: 10/20 Total: 70/100 Mystery Machine For: -Van is a solid representation despite size limitations. - Fred is exclusive to this set. Against: - You can't fit the entire Mystery gang inside - You'll spend more time applying stickers than building Score Metrics: Build: 15/20 Playability: 15/20 Minifigures: 18/20 Price: 17/20 Collectibility: 18/20 Total: 83/100 Mystery Plane Adventures For: - Headless Horseman is one of the best villains in whole range - Solid build with great parts palette Against: - Color scheme is off-putting at first. - Same Shaggy from 75900 Score Metrics: Build: 17/20 Playability: 16/20 Minifigures: 18/20 Price: 16/20 Collectibility: 15/20 Total: 82/100 Edited September 21, 2015 by kelceycoe Quote

Ultron Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Mystery Plane gets higher scores more than the Mansion does??What the hell?? Yeah, what? Headless Horseman really isn't even that good since you can get 2 of those pumpkins in the mansion and make your own. Quote
Fuppylodders Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 (edited) I really fail to see how the mystery mansion gets only a 4 on playability while the mummy set gets a 16??! I seriously don't think those scores are very accurate. Or the scorer has no imagination. Edited September 21, 2015 by Fuppylodders Quote
ultron32 Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Mystery Machine is the only set I own so far but here's my two cents. The mystery plane and the mystery boat are completely unnecessary builds for anyone except kids, pretty much. The Horseman is neat but his head, the best part, is in other sets. The mummy has a fairly boring build, and extremely boring minifigs: anyone who's been collecting for a few years has a mummy by now, and anyone who's bought even one Scooby Doo set already has Scooby and Shaggy. The Lighthouse is a neat build and the minifigures of the set are pretty great. Same with the mansion. The mystery machine, lastly, is dang near perfect. Yeah I would have preferred the whole gang to fit and to cut out all that tech in the back (plus I'd have used an opening roof, not an opening back) and the stickers are really unfortunate, but it still should be everyone's favorite model of the line and with a good set of minifigs as well. The plane and the mummy set are the only two I plan to skip. I will have enough of Shaggy and Scooby by the time I have the other three sets and neither set has a memorable model or villain. Quote
fred67 Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 ^^ Agree the Mystery Machine is "the" set for someone that wants some Scooby Doo memorabilia, but you need Daphne and Velma. I think the Mystery Mansion is not necessarily a great representation of S.D., but it seems like a great set on it's own, and I really want Velma (I actually want to give the Mystery Machine along with Daphne and Velma to a friend of mine, but I also want them myself). The only way to get Velma is to spend $20 for a single figure on bricklink, or $90 to get both figures and a whole lot more in the set. Quote
AFOLguy1970 Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 I do not see how the mansion could be lacking in play features. It has: A greenhouse with a carnivorous plant (moving jaws) secret compartment for the key a warball trap above the door a rotating clock and turntable to reveal the vampire a small vehicle It has 7 minifigs if you count Scooby. Besides Velma, the Black Knight and Vampire are unique to the set. As far as I know, this is currently the only way to get a glow in the dark ghost. There is an assortment of interesting parts including rare purple parts, two jack o lantern parts, a printed coffin, and some other great parts. They included a lot, but managed to keep the price below $100. Quote
Robert8 Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Buy the Mystery Machine set... and then Brinklink Daphne and Velma Simple as that Quote
fred67 Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 It's not that the mansion is lacking in features, it's that the only universally iconic set is the Mystery Machine. Buy the Mystery Machine set... and then Brinklink Daphne and Velma Simple as that I explained why that's losing idea in my post. Quote
greenalfonzo Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Very disappointed to hear this is a single wave theme. I guess sales have nothing to do with it! Maybe good sales will bring it back eventually. There is a great opportunity here that they are missing. Without a real castle theme and pirates ending after one wave, a Scooby Doo castle and pirate ship would be great crossover sets. And that Mansion review is lame. I won't be buying that mag. Quote
Pulp Detective Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 (edited) I sent an email to one of the toy stores here in Greece and the store manager told me that the amount of sets they'll recive will be very limited and he doesn't know if any other stores will get them.I better snatch up the Mansion while I can then. But I wonder why such a limited amount, maybe since Lego planned this theme to last for one wave only they didn't produced many sets. 8BrickMario Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 I'm in it for the monsters, so I'd need every set to be satisfied. However, if this was it, then it'll be much easier on me. Quote
Blondie-Wan Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 If this line is doing as well as it appears to be doing, I suspect LEGO will keep it going, even if they don't have anything planned for next year. They can always skip a year of new releases, just keeping the first wave around as long as it sells well and releasing another wave in 2017. They used to do it with SpongeBob Squarepants all the time. As long as the line sells well, there's continued media support, and they have access to the license, it should go on for a while. Quote
strangely Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 I expect we'll get a couple minifigures next year, at least one for the TV special when it comes to video. Plus as I recall they announced there was going to be a direct to video movie release too. So there's a good chance we'll get more monsters that way. Quote
Pulp Detective Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Monsters are good by all means but I prefer locations like the Mansion or the Lighthouse. If we do get another wave I hope we get more of those,a haunted castle would be a dream come true since I missed the one from the Monster Fighters line. Dr.Cogg Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 I own all the SD sets except the Headless Horse, which I will get eventually and I think that TLG did a good job with them, the sets colors are dark and fit the theme, the minifigures are excellent and the locations and vehicles (mostly the Mystery Machine) are well designed. Borex Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 I still need to buy the Mansion, Machine and Lighthouse, i hope they'll still be on the shelves for a while. Quote

I agree with you on this. Those would be cool. I personally would love to see a monster greenhouse set on its own (greenhouses have been included in several large sets but never individually as far as I know). Something like the greenhouse part of the Scooby Doo mansion with some series 14 plant monster style figures. Quote
