Liege Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Hey guys, My wife purchased me a little technic set (42026 - pullback F1) as a christmas stocking filler. I haven't played with lego for many years and loved it. It reignited my interest, so i went and purchased another basic technics kit (42023 - Digger, loader & truck) and dug out my old old technics (8064) and about 3kgs of random blocks I had in the cupboard. I have been looking online and want to do a custom build but i still need a few skills yet. I've been playing in LDD and have a basic idea of my build (Landrover Defender) but need to know more about the technicalities of Suspension on lego. What kit would you recommend to buy and build first, to learn more? I'd prefer to keep it realistic with a solid axle set up front and rear that can flex. I'll use independant if i have to but would prefer not. I would also like something remote or mechanically driven to gain an understanding of driveline components and gearing on lego. I'm not mechanically minded and would prefer to build something that works, from instructions to start with. A larger commercial body would be good as well so I can look at structural strength and framing using blocks. A lot of my childhood builds crumbled when played with! Cheers. Quote
TFDev Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 The First big technic set that comes to mind is the 42009. Not remote controlled, but it has a multi function gearbox and over 2600 parts including 1 motor. Quote
DrJB Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 42029 is your best bet. It has all the suspension parts you need. Quote
rasteel Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 (edited) For current sets I would have to agree with 42029 for your MOC idea, suspension and some great tires. You may also consider 9398. It has the suspension, and a larger set of tires. Best of all it comes with $85 in Remote components: 2 large motors, servo motor, V2 IR receiver, and battery. The Volvo loader is the only other remote set right now, and from what I've seen has had mediocre reviews. 9398 can still be found near msrp on ebay, but act soon if you do choose this set as it just retired last month and will become more scarce. Watch ebay for a good price on an 8070 as well, I have seen them go at msrp still on occasion, and its a really great set. I recently got back into lego in July, focusing on space (no starwars) and technic, and was lucky to grab most of the 420XX technic line at clearance prices as they were phased out. I am now glad I did because I am not thrilled with the technical complexity or style choices of most of the 2014 and 2015 technic sets (so far) and am hoping this is not a trend. 42029, and 42038 are great though. Freekysch Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Well, if I were you, I would buy the big crane 42009. It has a huge amount of pieces, lots of wheels and a nice gearbox. But if you want RC, go for 9398 or 42030. Quote
Blakbird Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 I suggest getting the instructions for Sheepo's Modular All Terrain Platform. It does everything you are looking to do and he is a master of the craft. Quote
Liege Posted January 12, 2015 Author Posted January 12, 2015 thanks blakbird, that is exactly what i am looking for. Thanks to everyone else as well, I am looking at getting a 9398 if i can find one secondhand and if not, a 42029 (actually probably both). that will help for my second project. Quote

Liege Posted January 14, 2015 Author Posted January 14, 2015 (edited) I got myself a 42029 (& 42028 dozer - not relevant to this convo though!) and have assembled the chassis and suspension, I'm not really interested in the pickup body and will be using this pack as parts. Is the suspension on 42029 & 9398 the same? I'm still looking to buy a 9398 if I can find one. i learnt a lot about lego suspension and was amazed by some of the custom parts and what you can do with them. -nevermind, after studying some pictures of 9398, i can see differences. DrJB Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Get the manuals for both from lego.com, they have all the info you need, and plenty of pictures of course. Quote
