With all of the other entries for the [TC6] SBrick contest, I thought I'd post some work in progress pictures of my own entry. Some time before the contest actually started, I was starting to build the chassis of a most unusual truck, a custom Kenworth C500 tridem-tridem with a Cormach 23000A loader crane, assembled by Falcon Industries of Canada.

My model is not quite a straightforward replica, but more inspired by this machine. Initially, I was planning on making the model more like a flagship set, with no remote control, and just a single motor for all the crane functions. But, when I heard about the competition, I just had to adapt this model to enter.

The model itself is about 30% complete, consisting mostly of the chassis, and some parts of the bodywork, including the unusual C500 engine hood.

The model currently has the following features:

  • Drive, via XL motor, to the rear three axles, and to a modeled V-12 engine. (not quite realistic, but it looks cool.)
  • Steering on the front three axles via Servo motor, with differing angles between the axles. This is accomplished with steering arms of differing lengths.
  • Lights, controlled via a switch.
  • An opening hood, with two fold up panels on each side, and two removable panels, as for a real C500.
  • Opening cabinets on either side, as on the real thing. (one has not been added yet.)

I plan to add more features, including the crane itself, and the rest of the bodywork. The crane functions will be controlled with a function splitter, somewhat similar to 8043, but different, as the splitter only has two motors, but six outputs.

Thus, for the purpose of the contest, the four functions are:

  • Drive, via XL motor.
  • Steer, via Servo motor.
  • Function split control, via servo motor
  • Function splitter, driven by XL motor, with six functions. (Raising the crane arm, bending the crane arm, extension, winching, slewing, and the outriggers.)

These two shots show how the hood opens, and the removable side panels. The engine actually has many details, including a supercharger, a cooling fan, an airtank, an oil filter, and a batter box, with wires. The battery box is the dbg box with two strings coming out of it, representing wires.

And now, the money shot, the underside, showing the different lengths of steering arms to get different steering angles, and the drive train to the rear.

These are detail shots of the undersides, showing better the drive and steering mechanism. The truck is so long, you can't really get a good view of the underside in just one picture.

The rear bumper, with license plate from set #8682 Nitro Intimidator, mudflaps made out of track links, and the taillights, which actually work. Although, the license plate is not correct, as the real truck is from Canada.

Hi,

Good work thus far! i suggest filling the cabinet with chains and strings. Most real crane or tow trucks trucks have a cabinet filled with the stuff...

I would really like to see your concept for a function splitter with six functions, controlled by a servo. Io'm designing one of my own, but I use one M motor and one servo to control the functions of a Large and a XL motor. The M motor I use for switching between main and secondary function, and the servo is to switch each motor between two or three secondary functions.

This looks really promising, there seems to be some great duel in TC6 between the tow trucks. There are 2 more large scale tow trucks like this in TC6 and they all look beastly. Voting will be incredibly hard in TC6 because there are so many worthy winners.

I'mn really looking forward to how you will be doing the outriggers and the huge crane. And, apparently, a six-fold function switchbox? That's gonna be interesting for sure.

Oh, and cool subject matter as well, of course :)

The is a massive truck and your is too! It is looking great so far, keep it up! How much does it wiegh?

If that big red crane in the background is for that truck, I fear it will be out of scale.

Not bloody well likely. :laugh: That crane is longer than the entire truck, and weighs roughly twice as much. The actual crane is much smaller, but still has four sections. Even though the crane is shorter than the 42009 boom, it can actually extend farther.

The big red crane is something else, another project that is on hold until this competition is over.

OMG, an update?!? It's about time.

I have not had a chance to really take any pictures of this, due to how much work I've had to do with it. But enough about that, on to the pictures!

Now, the cab is a lot more complete, and the front outriggers are added. From the start, I knew that making 3 stage outriggers, and making them look good would be more or less impossible, especially with the deadline. I decided to do folding outriggers instead, but it turned out to be no easier. These outriggers have gone through at least 3 major revisions, between me starting, and now.

The outriggers actually fold out amazingly wide, as shown in the two pictures below.

The pads are lowered by two mini linear actuators, and are made out of black track sprockets.

The crane and outrigger assembly are meant to be easy to remove, and this can be done by removing 4 red pins on the underside, as shown below.

Each outrigger is driven by 2 mini linear actuators, through a highly complex articulated geartrain.

The L motor is just for testing, the outriggers will be driven through an XL motor operating a mechanical sequencer.

Man, this thing is crazy complex, and very large and detailed (like the tire mudguard flaps details). Also, just look at that gear maze! But in all honesty, your wheels are way out of proportions. I think you need larger wheels (wheels on this set would maybe suit it), or you made your truck a bit to wide, and tall. Everything is so cool on it, but the wheel size just bugs me :3

Thanks for the advice, but there is pretty much no chance of me getting bigger wheels. Besides, those wheels are not much bigger. Yeah, the cab and bonnet are a bit wide, but I think that adds to the intimidating nature of the truck. Also, I think the wheels are actually roughly the right size, but it's an optical illusion that makes them look smaller. Sariel actually talks about that in his book.

That is a crazy amount of functions you have added,but the styling is poor I think by builder of your standard.

Aaannd just what do you mean by that? Keep in mind that it's a work in progress. It would help me a lot more if you said what I was doing wrong, or poorly.

The actual truck is alot larger than most trucks of its type, and it actually is pretty large for the size of wheels it uses. Nevertheless, this is one complicated model, with lots of neat functions. It would be nice if you can find more panels for the front end of the truck, maybe using newer version of the fairings instead of the older model panels to add uniform and flow to your model. Or maybe just some readjusting of the existing panels on the truck to give it a better finish/outer body.

i don't think I could use newer panels, as the panels I'm using are actually dark pearl gray, but rejiggering them should be doable. But, I'd only do a major redesign if I had the time to do so, as my priority is finishing in time for the contest. Although, I'm actually trying to go for the look of sets like 8466, with more implied surfacing.

I agree, there is no point saying a moc isn't on point, if you're not going to have the courtesy to explain what is wrong with it. It's like campaigning for president, but you have no reason why you should be president. It's just ridiculous :\

Sorry folks, but it seems as if I am going to have to withdraw from the contest. I think I pushed myself a little too far with this one, and tried too much, with too little time. :cry_sad: :cry_sad: :cry_sad: However, I will finish the model, and enter the next contest.
