1974 Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 No answer to the colour choices they made? Quote
Blondie-Wan Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I appreciate the response about the price increase, and it does make sense - that was a long time without a price increase. It's still too bad for us, of course, but it's understandable. I do wish they'd keep more baseplate colors available, though. Adding tan is great (and Star Wars builders alone will probably make that worthwhile for them), but replacing the previous green with a different one and ditching blue entirely just doesn't make sense to me. Sven F Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Whaaat? I was aware of the blue ones being retired, but no one mentioned the regular green plates are gone too. I need to stack up on them while I can find them. The bright friends and creator color is useless. Quote
DrJB Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I wonder, does bright green use LESS green dye than classic green? Could this be motivated by cost reduction? Quote
1974 Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 IF there's a price difference it must be microscopic. No, it's just TLG being NEW! BETTER! FLASHIER! FOCUSGROUPS! PROBEDROIDS! AFOLS?- WHAT?! Now, vacuum-molded baseplates would not be a bad thing for a thirdparty (*cough* KICKSTARTER *cough*) to try out. It's just one mold and not even an expensive one/expensive/difficult process either. Plastic could surely be sourced and colourmatching TLG these days can't be all that difficult, sigh As several have stated, they'd be okay to pay the NEW! price if the colour palette was much wider So, who's game? Vorkosigan Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 There are already clone baseplates. I saw one the other day in local toystore, I think it was 32 x 96? It was system on one side and duplo on the other, meant to have traction on carpet either side up. Probably not ideal for big layouts, but at least it looked like a good match for the old green. jodawill Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 I wrote a review on S@H a week ago indicating that the color isn't as described, which I think would be very helpful for shoppers to know. They deleted my review. Quote
Faefrost Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 I suspect that the bright green change is more an aesthetic change to kind of make the plates blend better both with standard System sets and Friends. With probably the greater desire for them leaning towards Friends and Creator, both of which lean more towards bright green for there bottom plates typically these days. Quote
kibosh Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Do any third party makers make 32x32 base plates? I don't want 32x96 or double sided plates. I want plates that will fit in seamlessly with my current display. An expanded color palette, as has been pointed out, would be ideal. I'm not a huge fan of third party pieces, but I think I could make an exception for base plates! Quote
1974 Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 This is disturbing! Wrong colour(s), major price hike AND crappier quality?? TLG are getting good at copying their competitors, eh? http://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=885754 I use loads of baseplates (many of old grey ones and they luckily not affected by this), but I won't be buying new ones, only used from BL Quote

I put it off because I was hoping to buy them on a double VIP points day. I didn't know about the price increase until it was too late. But now I can't even buy the color I need for my layout because they don't make green baseplates anymore. I knew for months that the packaging was changing, but TLG still hasn't even acknowledged the fact the color is different. I've never bought a clone brand in my life, but if I knew of an alternative for these baseplates, I would buy them in a heartbeat. Edited January 21, 2015 by jodawill Quote

Wodanis Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Definitely new colors would be great...outside of the Modular line. I'm talking official sealed sets like this, but with more variety in color. LEGO was not thinking discontinuing BLUE with a brand new PIRATES line coming out in a few months. No one would possibly want water for their layouts... The bright green took me by surprise when I saw them at Target. Definitely not working for me. I much prefer the regular green. Tan, I'm okay with. Although not at that price. You can basically buy a small set for the same price as a baseplate. I'd rather get the pieces/figures than just a blank slate to put nothing on since I spent all of my money on the plate... I couldn't agree more. I'm not sure what the logic is behind these decisions to change the colours and discontinue blue. I understand blue may not have been a high volume seller but it had it uses. I only have one blue baseplate. What so far no one has mentioned is why Lego is only selling only 3 plates? Why not increase the range of colours instead? That way blue doesn't have to be produced as much but still made available as selling other colours in volume would offset the cost. Red wouldn't be used too much but I could definitely see them selling tan, blue, grey, dark grey, dark green and bright green, not to mention reddish brown Quote
Faefrost Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 I'm still kicking myself. There was a booth in the mall near me that was selling these fascinating Lego compatable baseplates. They came in a few sizes from standard 32x32 to I think 80x80. They were each mounted on Masonite. And they had all sorts of varied colors and printing. From city streets to icy snow drifts and space markings. I meant to go back and take a closer look, but they were gone after Christmas. Quote
Venunder Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Lucky USA and Canada. These new plates are £6,99, which is about $10,50. Or about Canadian $13.15 TLG are really screwing the UK with these prices. Quote
Artanis I Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Hahaha try $13 in Australia. Hence why I don't buy any baseplates. Only big one I have is an old grey one from the 80s with pen, chew and bend marks on it, the rest are from sets. They just seem way too expensive for what they are. Grey is useful for town & space based building, green has many uses, blue, like white, has few but definite uses, tan is good for desert (inc. Tatooine) and swamp scenes, black is good for town, space and underground, and brown has many uses, I think that's one that TLG could consider. You could use brown baseplates for anything except water, snow & heavy metropolitan scenes. Quote
dr_spock Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 It appears that the new green is also used for the small base for the Junior sets like 10679 Pirate Treasure Hunt. Quote
The Jersey Brick Guy Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 That looks more Lime to me. Quote
m0dulo Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 (edited) I had been putting off getting some real green baseplates because I avoid malls before Christmas. When I found out about the 60% price increase, I was bummed but figured I'd pay for procrastinating. But I have no use for lime. I've been to the local LEGO store several times and they haven't had green in stock so I can't tell which color it really is. Edited January 27, 2015 by m0dulo Quote
