yojeff Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Hi, I want to assemble a couple of Technic pieces to explain gears to my nephew (Different ratios giving different rotation speeds, ...). Among the Technic pieces I have, there is a Gearbox (6588). Are there interesting things that I could built with it? What is it used for usually? Thanks! Quote
anton1678 Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 It is usually used for mounting worm gears, like this: Quote
skaah Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 It is usually used for connecting a worm wheel with a 36 tooth gear, for example for creating lifting arms. See 8280 for example, the arm with the water nozzle can be lifted by rotating a crank, one of these gearboxes is in the middle of this construction. Quote
1974 Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 My son totally loves the Technic DACTA sets. Those books show all kinds of simple machines and he picks the engineering principles up real fast :) He can build just about any set now and he's not even six. Pretty good That part you've mentioned only works in one direction which can frustrate kids. How old is he? Quote
yojeff Posted January 13, 2015 Author Posted January 13, 2015 Thanks for the info ! My son totally loves the Technic DACTA sets. Those books show all kinds of simple machines and he picks the engineering principles up real fast :) He can build just about any set now and he's not even six. Pretty good That part you've mentioned only works in one direction which can frustrate kids. How old is he? He's 8. He has a couple of (regular) sets, including the Highway Pickup 7347 (that I love more than he does). My mom bought a couple of bags of random bricks with some Technc bricks, and I'll be able to make a couple of fun things. I found some great transmission models on the Internet. Thanks again! yojeff Posted January 15, 2015 Author Posted January 15, 2015 Hi! So my model is done, but I have a problem. The "piston" runs smoothly when I turn the crank in one direction, but not in the other direction. In the "bad" direction, the assembly needs "more" force to turn when the arm (the grey holder + pin + blue holder) is straight up or straight down (from around -15 deg to completely straight). Is this normal? Thanks! JF Quote
