Guys, with BS to close within 2 weeks, it is time to act.

I think it is very important to gain control for the media to share lego images.

Then creation from around the world, US, Europe, Australia and Asia shall only be mostly published under our lead

here is why I propose

All we have to do is all chip in some money, build a website just like Brickshelf. advertise it everywhere and wait for 01/08/2007

maybe there will even be advertising company looking to pay the site for ads because of the huge traffic.

Guys this is worth thinking about we can call it the "Euro Brickshelf"

I'm afraid that's incredibly unlikley. After all, why build a new site when there are sites already usable. Just move all your things to Maj.com, and everything will be fine.

G'day to you,

Norrington

I largely agree with you Norrington. There are many sites that can be used, the community just needs to pick one. The only part that I don't agree with is your attitude to Maj.com. Until Kevin makes a statement on his intentions I wouldn't trust any site of his.

I think you are underestimating the expense and difficulty of what you propose Cody. Even downloading the entire archive in two weeks will be difficult. I have personally downloaded about 1 GB so far. I thnik that long term a clear successor to Brickshelf might emerge, but I doubt that it will happen this year. I do hope I am wrong though.

of course it is unlikely, when all you do is to sit here and say "it is unlikely"

i don't know about maj.com, it certainly cannot

and also, it is hard to make almost everyone to uplaod their pic on to maj.

like some may go to photobucket, some to maj, some to flickr some to yahoo......etc

but if a site is made especially for this to replace brickshelf.......

then obviously everyone will upload their photo there

Hey cody,

I like your eternal optimism. It makes me smile. X-D I think you have a great idea. Your energy is certainly refreshingly positive. I myself am waiting for the dust to settle after Brickshelf shuts down to see what will happen next. I hope you are right, too. I hope we have something, eventually, that worked as well and as simple as BS. Keep spreading that optimism, *sweet* *y* Thanks!

Some of you have already heard about this, but a site called brickimage.net is in the process of being built. If brickshelf doesn't stick around I hope this site will be a good alternative that the LEGO community can latch onto. The last thing I think any of us would want is for our community to become fractured. One thing I hope brickimage does is improve upon brickshelf's interface. Adding many of the features of flickr could draw a lot of people back in from other sites (as well as improving the overall website layout; and if you didn't want any comments they could just as easily add a "no-comments" box)

If brickshelf disappears indefinitely I'll be sorry to see it go, however now could be a good opportunity to restrengthen the LEGO community, since so many people already seemed to be migrating to other sites.

you mean the "communities" right?

No. I meant what I said, otherwise I would have edited it! ;-)

Ultimately we are all on the internet, and we all are united by our love of Lego *wub* so yes, I think we are one community... or so the plan goes. Personally I think an aggregator is a better solution to the problem. Either something like ILENN or something software based. The cost of running a server for everyone would be expensive, and I thus don't blame Kevin for closing Brickshelf. (I do blame him for his lack of communication, but I suspect there is more to the story that I/we know.)

For the time being I will be using Flickr, but I will be eagerly awaiting BrickImage. If you feel so strongly about this and think I/we am/are being negative nancies I recomend you do something yourself.

Indeed. I mean, do we even KNOW if it was over money?

Like I've said before, you'd imagine there'd be people with philanthropist-like intentions who could've and would've shelled out.

But as you said... communication. *wacko*

I'm glad that people are stepping up and putting forward ideas and trying to motivate the community to find a solution to the problem that we'll soon be experiencing. Fortunately, I think that there have already been a lot of plans at forming new pic hosting sites. Even leaving aside Flickr and maj, I've also seen posts at Lugnet and elsewhere about brickimage, MOCpages, and various other possibilities. I think that the problem we will have in the months to come won't be in finding somewhere to host our Lego pics, but rather in deciding which site to use.

me too. i suspect there is more to the story, but it just isn't revealed to the general public lego builder who loaded their ENTIRE LIFE'S LEGO CREATION on to brickshelf only to find out it will be closing in 2 weeks.

Exactly. I think there are enough options for a while.

Oh, to be sure, it is quite a confounding situation we've witnessed the past few days.

I wonder what people actually even WANT of a moc hosting site?

Me,

--Brickshelf's simple upload interface.

--A button to jump to a biography of the creator.

--Flickr ability to focus on a section of a pic and comment.

--Flickr ability to post comments beneath image.

--A bar above the image with like 5 pics of that moc's gallery... and arrows to let you scroll through them.

--All that but without all the gobbledygook junk lining the screen like in Flickr

*sigh*

But for now, MAJ.

If that goes down, I'll just reupload to Flickr, then MocPages, then whoever else (brickimage sounds promising), in that order.

I'm sad. I was hoping I'd make it back onto page 1 of Brickshelf's "most viewed" page before it's doors closed.

Oh well... guess that's what I get for going from a moc a month down to 2 mocs a year. :-D

Well i was just looking a maj.com ready to move all my pictures and it seems to have been taken over!!! By loads of lego fans :-D If you go to the home page and look at the recent folders you will see what i mean :-D It seems that brick shelf will live on in maj, as the lego pictures take over :-D

:-D Yeah, I'd noticed that too.

Well.... sounds good, although.... another chance for Kevin to screw the whole thing up.... 8-|

That is true, but the interface is all the same and if you keep all your pictures backed-up there should be no real problem. :-)

brickmaj on!

Honestly, I think that MOCpages is going to be an obvious choice for many fans. Since they are now offering image hosting, and are already well established within the community, it would seem to me that they are an obvious choice. Trust is going to be a major factor when considering where the community will want to migrate. MOCpages has the benefit of being well-known, and relatively reliable (even if it's review system is somewhat flawed). The problem with new opportunist sites is that they don't have the built up goodwill needed to attract longtime AFOLs. I mean, why should I believe that brickimage or any new site for that matter is going to be up and running for more than a few months.

A perfect example of such a site is LEGOfan.org. Originally, when it was first proposed, it was to be the be-all and end-all of LEGO sites, providing a comprehensive replacement for Lugnet. Delays and skepticism resulted in a failed site that rarely ran properly, with forums that hardly worked. Now, its nothing but a single page listing the current Ambassadors for this cycle. Too often, people step up as 'saviours' for our community, with neither the know-how or dedication to make a difference. I place more trust in those who have already proven themselves. Eurobricks is a great site, but I don't think it is an ideal hub for hosting the community's images. Heck, I'm not even sure if the ownership would want to go in that direction.

The only problem I can foresee with MOCPages is that he may prohibit deep links. Therefore, you couldn't show off your MOCs except for text-linking them...

Thus we add our MOCs to every site until only one is left standing. ;-) Blueandwhite brings up a good point. However, being too cautious could be bad business for the other sites, and everyone has to start somewhere. My guess is that the determining factor will be which site has the best features. MOCpages' interface doesn't interest me, so I won't be signing up, but it's very generous of them to start hosting MOCs. (And after dabbling in flickr, I doubt I'll use it much.)

The hunt is on...

Exactly. They are already warning that they might, or at the least charge for it.

On fire-fox you can just right click on the image and click 'copy image location'. That works most of the time.

This maj.com looks good, although I've always seen MOCPages to be quite cool. But I'm gonna stick with maj, as it seems MOCPages won't allow deeplinks. Too bad.
