kisper Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Either way :) I am looking forward to your finished build ;) Quote
OG_technic Posted January 31, 2015 Author Posted January 31, 2015 Thanks guys Also, the chassis is now completed. I didn't have enough pieces to make it as detailed as I wanted to, but it'll have to do Quote
agrof Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 Wow, this looks really professional and realistic! Excellent! Quote
gevans12 Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 That is awesome, are you going to make instructions? I would say that it actually has a better chassis design than 42043 Arocs... Especially with the outriggers. Maybe combine it with the Arocs crane and tipper :) Quote
Epic Technic Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 That is amazing, truly a masterpiece. I have one question, do the outriggers touch floor when fully lowered because on the pics it looks like they aren't? Quote
Dafgek81 Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 The redesigned version looks awsome, I would love to have instructions and an additional parts list for the parts used that aren't in the 42009 set. Quote
Dafgek81 Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 (edited) Is it inspired by a certain brand of truck or is it a own creation. Looks a little like a M.A.N. or an Iveco Edited February 1, 2015 by Dafgek81 Quote
izorn Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 This cab is awesome! i really like the lights, keep going Quote
kisper Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 I am loving version no 2 better Definitely would like the instructions to this as I really like trucks Quote
OG_technic Posted February 1, 2015 Author Posted February 1, 2015 Wow, thanks for all the support guys! That is amazing, truly a masterpiece. I have one question, do the outriggers touch floor when fully lowered because on the pics it looks like they aren't? Yup, they do not. The initial design for the outriggers had them extending to the ground but because the model is quite heavy there was too much stress on the mini-LAs and the steering racks. I changed it so that it barely touches the ground to prevent any damage to those pieces. Is it inspired by a certain brand of truck or is it a own creation. Looks a little like a M.A.N. or an Iveco You got it It wasn't modeled after a specific truck, but I wanted to capture the essense of a "rugged" M.A.N/Iveco truck. These are some of the pictures I used for inspiration. And as for instructions, college started last week so I really doubt I'd have enough time to make instructions for the whole model. But I should be able make picture instructions for the cab if enough people want it. Sorry Quote
OG_technic Posted February 3, 2015 Author Posted February 3, 2015 (edited) Well lads, the model is as completed as it will ever be. I'm not very happy with the rear end and the color scheme could use some work but I'm getting bored with this MOC so I'm going to stop here. Overally pretty satisfied with the way everything turned out. One of my big goals with this MOC was having functions that were intuitive to operate, for example, one direction of the motor would "unravel" everything ( Outriggers would extend+deploy, crane arms would raise etc.) and the other would "retract". My last MOC didn't have this and it was really annoying figuring out the right directions after switching functions. There are two gearboxes, the one in the chassis controls Outrigger deployment/LA-extension/Turntable and sending power to the crane. There's another gearboxes on top of the turntable that controls the crane arm. Initally I wanted to have both gearboxes mounted in the chassis but it was impossible to have that+all the functions with only 3 driving rings. I tried to make the gearbox on top of the turntable as compact as possible but it still made the crane look a little too big for the model. Oh well. The outrigger design was inspired by the 42009 althuogh heavily modified. Other than that everything is pretty simple. Thanks for all the love, I really appreciate it. Constructive criticism is always welcome. This is only my 3rd MOC so please go easy on me Edited February 4, 2015 by OG_technic Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 (edited) I am going to be brutally honest and say that the crane does not look very good. Yes the functions are there but the looks are not. I would make the cranes red and black like the pic below. Take a look Efferman's crane and scale it down a bit. Edited February 3, 2015 by Alasdair Ryan Quote
Jelmer Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 i'm with Alasdair, the truck looks great(both design and technics) but the crane is not on par with the truck. Quote
OG_technic Posted February 3, 2015 Author Posted February 3, 2015 Thank you very much for the criticism! Now I know what I can improve upon. I agree that compared to effermans crane mine looks like a joke. The problem is his is fully pneumatic while I only have two linear actuators and a very limited selection of pins and lift arms left from the 42009. I need to figure out a way to make the second arm hinge have a wide range of motion while taking up minimal space. Any ideas? Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Start with the telescopic section of the boom, get that looking the way you want it then move on to the main arm (look at how the crane trucks crane works). The top of the main boom should be slightly curved, you may need to offset the LA connection by 1/2 a stud. You can do this by using connecters and offset connectors. Quote
Dafgek81 Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Like the chassis, outriggers and cab, any chance on instructions? Would love to build it some day if I can vermurwen hands on a second hand 42009, missed out on it in 2013, bought a second hand 8110 insted. Quote
Rishab N Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Truck looks awesome, but the crane needs work. Is it no longer an alternative build of 42009 as I see a couple parts that aren't in the set Quote
OG_technic Posted February 4, 2015 Author Posted February 4, 2015 (edited) What do you guys think about this crane? I tried to model it after the knuckleboom crane (within reason, obv) that's in the picture posted by Alasdair. Also while salvaging for parts for the crane I decided to change the cab a little bit. Specifically the area around and under the doors. I felt like it needed some curves Sorry for the massive picture dump, but I wanted to show all angles. Another problem is choosing a color for the base of the crane where the gearbox is supposed to be. The most sensible descision would be to make it yellow because I have a lot of yellow liftarms leftover. Black and red are out of the question but I may be able to make it in DBG.... Decisions decisions Also, Rishab, well strictly speaking it isn't, but I only spent about 20$ on extra pieces. Edited February 4, 2015 by OG_technic Quote
DrJB Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Very nice MOC you have. The 8258 truck has a similar crane. Might be able to 'borrow' some ideas from there. Quote
OG_technic Posted February 4, 2015 Author Posted February 4, 2015 (edited) Very nice MOC you have. The 8258 truck has a similar crane. Might be able to 'borrow' some ideas from there. Thanks :) I did take a look at it, but I wasnt that impressed by it's looks. TBH I thought efferman's crane was much better looking still. I think I should move the 1st LA further down so the crane can fold down more. Any other tips/criticisms? I know I need to work on the hinges because it's a little flimsy right now, but what do you think about the overall shape and the look of it? I have another idea to make the 3rd section completely black so I'd I have more red liftarms left for the base. And be brutally honest Edited February 4, 2015 by OG_technic Quote
Jelmer Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Way better, especially if you move the bottom LA one stud so it can fold down all the way. Quote
