OOC: Alexis' fan is Lightning - elemental.

"Might as well, just in case there are more enemies coming up. Hold your attacks if you manage to kill tin head here, I'd like to Overkill the soldier."

Arthur casts Fragile on the Toy Soldier, then forecasts an Electrified weather, both from the Back Row.

Alexis vs. Tin Knight - Special Damage/Lethal Hit (Tin Knight: 352 health+60 SP-(80x2=160 dmg)=252 health)

Toy Soldier - Free Hit on Althior (no effect)

Arthur's scroll casting fails, but he manages to predict that a great storm will hit the room momentarily and last until the end of the battle. Althior fumbles, but Alexis gets another hit with her fan. The blinded Toy Soldier cannot find a target. Then the thunderclouds roll against the ceiling again.

Arthur casts Frailty at the toy Soldier and then casts Lightning again. "Second verse same as the first, I'd say. Thanks for putting me first, by the way, Althior, it really helps."

Results of Round Three of the Bathroom Battle:

>Arthur uses Scroll of Frailty on Toy Soldier - Success (Toy Soldier: fragile; Arthur: -1 ether)

>Arthur (Lightning) vs. Toy Soldier - Spell (Toy Soldier: 285 health+30 SP-(55x16=880 dmg)=0 health; Arthur: -1 ether, +565 gold from overkill)

>Althior (Lightning) vs. Tin Knight - Shield/Spell (Raise an Army - no effect)

Alexis vs. Tin Knight - Shield/Damage (Grim Reaper - no effect)

>Lilly does nothing

Arthur makes the toy soldier brittle and overkills it with a devastating thunderbolt. Althior and Alexis find their skills useless against the Tin Knight.

Current weather: Electrified (doubles lightning damage and halves water damage for the rest of the battle)

Results of Round Four of the Bathroom Battle:

>Arthur (Lightning) vs. Tin Knight - Mist (Tin Knight: no elemental immunities for one round; Arthur: -1 ether)

>Althior (Lightning) vs. Tin Knight - Special Damage/Amplified Spell (Tin Knight: 252 health+60 SP-(71x8=568 dmg)=0 health; Althior: -1 ether)

Alexis vs. Tin Knight

>Lilly does nothing

It only takes one more spell from Althior to take down the haughty Tin Knight.

THE BATTLE IS VICTORIOUS!

Althior and Alexis gain three fifths of a level, while Arthur and Lilly gain a quarter. The enemies drop the following loot:

heroicaquest125-toysoldier.jpgToy Soldier (Power: 30, pierces defense; has 1/6 chance to break when used; toy)

heroicaquest125-toycannon.jpgToy Cannon (Power:30, damages all opponents; has 1/6 chance to break when used; toy) OR Toy Cannon (WP:30, damages all opponents; has 1/6 chance to break when used; handcannon)

It did not surprise anyone that under all the tin armor laid Merlyn. The irritated Lilly tried to wake her cousin up.

"I don't think he was himself, Lilly, any more than you were yourself when you attacked us in doll form. I think..." Arthur bites his lip, wondering how Lilly would react to his theory. "I think the form Merlyn took was based on your perception of him. Whatever lured you in here with those noises managed to get into your head somehow, which is why only you can hear them. I have no idea why they chose to come after you and only you, but I can't imagine it ending well if they get their way."

Althior: Nothing

Alexis: Cannon

Arthur: Tin Artifacts

Lilly: Toy Soldier

Althior brushes his way past the two children. "Let's just make our way to the Bedroom already. I'm guessing your nanny might be in there already"

Posted

Arthur drinks a Mead, then passes Althior 245 gold. He then offers another 35 to the Necromancer, adding, "any chance I could have one of those Nostrums?" If Althior gives Arthur a Nostrum, he drinks it.

Before moving on, Arthur checks over Merlyn to make sure he's all right. "Merlyn? Can you hear me?"

Before moving on, Arthur checks over Merlyn to make sure he's all right. "Merlyn? Can you hear me?"

The boy came to his senses, and immediately jumped up, surveying his surroundings.

heroicanpc-merlynziegfried2.jpg

"Lilly! Are you alright? Is this... your dollhouse?"

heroicanpc-lillyziegfried2.jpg

"Yup. We got here accidentistly. Something went wrong with my spell... But these guys seem to think I'm making this all up in my head or something."

Merlyn eyed the heroes suspiciously.

heroicanpc-merlynziegfried2.jpg

"I know I'm here for real. Lilly, you should ditch those creeps and come with me. I'll find us a way back home."

heroicanpc-lillyziegfried2.jpg

"No! We still haven't looked everywhere! Nanny should be around here somewhere too!"

Merlyn grabbed Lilly's arm.

heroicanpc-merlynziegfried2.jpg

"Listen to me! It isn't safe here! You don't even know those grown-ups - who knows, they might have done this to you for all we know!"

heroicanpc-lillyziegfried2.jpg

"If you want to go home that bad, then go home!"

Just like Morgan earlier, Merlyn vanished in the instant that Lilly had uttered the words.

heroicanpc-lillyziegfried2.jpg

"Wow, I can really do that?!"

Arthur drinks the Nostrum, then prepares to move on. He sighs at Lilly's description of his concerns. "I don't think you're making this up, Lilly. I'm just...worried that someone's trying to hurt you. When things get into your head it can end...poorly, for everyone involved," he says, remembering his Hexing at the hands of the Dauntlets, among other episodes of chaos and confusion. "Guess I'm just that overprotective cousin," he concludes, chuckling in a vain attempt to cover up his concern.

Alexis looks around for anything interesting.

Alexis saw a bottle and a hairbrush sitting on the mirror table, but they were beyond the minefield, out of her reach. They looked fake, anyway.

After trading a Nostrum with Arthur for some gold, Althior hurried the party to the bedroom on the other side of the giant dollhouse. This time around, they saw no toys, only a book lying on the floor.

heroicaquest125-bedroom.jpg

heroicanpc-lillyziegfried2.jpg

"That's nanny's bedtime storybook! Ugh, I hate that thing! The stories are all so scary... But how did it get here?"

When Lilly picked the book up, dozens of pages fell out of it. On each separate page there were only a couple of sentences written.

heroicanpc-lillyziegfried2.jpg

"What do they say? I can't read very well yet..."

~BEDTIME HORROR STORY~

The heroes must reassemble the fallen pages to form a cohesive story. Each hero that participates in the reorganization will gain extra experience.

The distressed father went to look for her, and never returned. Ziegfried became the master of the black book, and history became to know him as one of the most powerful wizards that ever lived.

---

The lights took the girl to a cave and ushered her in. The tunnel was dark and steep, but the will-o’-the-wisps lighted Zieglinde’s way. Down and down and down she walked, until her feet felt sore. She came across many wondrous sights: a cavern filled with crystals; an underground lake with giant fish breaking the surface; even a village of small, cowardly creatures that hid from her.

---

But the phoenix said that only he should read the book, not Zieglinde or their father. Only he had the strength required to bend the book to his will, to become its master rather than its slave.

---

One day, when the siblings returned home with a basket full of berries and fruits from the woods, they found their father bedridden, weakened by a sudden fever. Their father knew of an herb that could help him, but it only grew in a distant swamp to the north of the forest. The children promised to retrieve the herb, even if it meant going further than they had ever gone before.

---

But Ziegfried was not interested in power, only in finding a cure for his father. The phoenix then said that his selflessness was exactly the reason why he was chosen to carry the book. Then the phoenix flew away, dropping a single blazing plume at Ziegfried’s feet.

---

They were will-o’-the-wisps. Ziegfried warned her sister to stay away from them, but it was too late. Zieglinde was already fascinated by the pretty lights that promised to take her to the herb, and started to following them without paying heed to her brother.

---

But the lights did not allow her to stop until she came to a great, black temple that stood in a huge cave. Bracing herself, Zieglinde stepped in.

---

Turning his back to his sister, Ziegfried returned home with the book and the phoenix pinion. There the book instructed him to distil the essence from the feather to produce a healing potion for his father. After recovering, the father asked Ziegfried about his sister, but the boy only told that she had gotten lost in the swamp.

---

Looking up, he did not see the sun, but a flaming phoenix hovering in mid-air in front of him. The phoenix spoke with the voice of her mother and said that Ziegfried should not worry. Zieglinde would return to him, carrying a book that could answer all their problems.

---

Zieglinde consulted the trees to guide her and her brother to the swamp. Night had fallen before they reached it, and heavy rain soaked them wet. Just as they were giving up hope in ever finding the herb they needed, they were surrounded by strange lights.

---

Ziegfried got upset. Her sister was being selfish, and that made her unworthy of the book. The siblings got into a fight, and Ziegfried knocked his sister down with a jolt of electricity, seizing the book.

---

Every day Ziegfried and Zieglinde would scour the surrounding forest, looking for something to eat, and every day they went a little bit deeper. The forest was not safe for children, for many wondrous beasts and dangerous monsters lurked there. But the two children were not helpless – they were children of a mage, after all. Ziegfried had the power to call thunder from the clouds above while Zieglinde could whisper to the trees.

---

Clutching the warm feather, Ziegfried fell asleep. In the morning, he heard Zieglinde calling his name. She had returned carrying a book with black covers, just as the phoenix had foretold. Ziegfried asked her sister to show him the book, but she refused, claiming it her own.

---

The boy summoned a thunderbolt to scare the wisps away, but only managed to knock himself out. When he came back to his senses, Zieglinde was long gone.

---

Deep in the forest there was a tower where a poor mage lived with his two children. The boy was called Ziegfried while the girl was called Zieglinde. Their mother had died years ago, and their mage father was too preoccupied with his studies, so the siblings had to take care of themselves.

---

Unfortunately Zieglinde fell directly on a bog eye and got stuck in the sinking mire. She pleaded her brother to pull her up, but Ziegfried steeled himself. He now had the book, and Zieglinde would only try to take it away from him again.

---

Meanwhile at the swamp, Ziegfried searched for his sister everywhere. Convinced that the will-o’-the-wisps had led Zieglinde into a bog eye, Ziegfried fell to his knees and started to cry bitterly. Suddenly a bright light dried his tears.

As if guided by the hands of fate itself, Arthur methodically gathers the pages together, reassembling them into a cohesive whole. He slowly begins to read.

"Deep in the forest there was a tower where a poor mage lived with his two children. The boy was called Ziegfried while the girl was called Zieglinde. Their mother had died years ago, and their mage father was too preoccupied with his studies, so the siblings had to take care of themselves.

Ziegfried had the power to call thunder from the clouds above while Zieglinde could whisper to the trees."

Arthur stops short. "Lilly..." he says, "this is us. This...this is where our family began, the beginnings of who we all are today..." Silently, swiftly, he reads on, following the tale of the siblings and the mysterious black book. "...I know that book."

Yes, you do.

With a sudden jerk of his wrist, he throws the papers to Althior and Alexis, instantly regretting his action as the pages scatter instead of staying together. "Sorry...sorry," he apologizes subduedly. "Should have thought that one through." He pauses as he picks up papers and hands them to the two ex-lovers. "I...have a request, actually. Feel free to jump in and help out and stuff, but...when we're done I'd like to be the one who reads the full story to Lilly. It's a family tale. She should hear it from me."

"You're too emotional. Grow up." Alexis picks up the papers then puts some more of them in order.

Zieglinde consulted the trees to guide her and her brother to the swamp. Night had fallen before they reached it, and heavy rain soaked them wet. Just as they were giving up hope in ever finding the herb they needed, they were surrounded by strange lights.

They were will-o’-the-wisps. Ziegfried warned her sister to stay away from them, but it was too late. Zieglinde was already fascinated by the pretty lights that promised to take her to the herb, and started to following them without paying heed to her brother.

The boy summoned a thunderbolt to scare the wisps away, but only managed to knock himself out. When he came back to his senses, Zieglinde was long gone.

But the lights did not allow her to stop until she came to a great, black temple that stood in a huge cave. Bracing herself, Zieglinde stepped in.

"I'm done with this nonsense, can't believe you find this interesting."

Althior rolls his eyes. "Biology out of the picture, know you're not this kids family, Regulus. Youve known this kid, what, a few hours? You have no more right to know this story than I do. You're not the protective brother, you're just someone who was hired for the job,"

Meanwhile at the swamp, Ziegfried searched for his sister everywhere. Convinced that the will-o’-the-wisps had led Zieglinde into a bog eye, Ziegfried fell to his knees and started to cry bitterly. Suddenly a bright light dried his tears.

Looking up, he did not see the sun, but a flaming phoenix hovering in mid-air in front of him. The phoenix spoke with the voice of their mother and said that Ziegfried should not worry. Zieglinde would return to him, carrying a book that could answer all their problems.

But the phoenix said that only he should read the book, not Zieglinde or their father. Only he had the strength required to bend the book to his will, to become its master rather than its slave.

But Ziegfried was not interested in power, only in finding a cure for his father. The phoenix then said that his selflessness was exactly the reason why he was chosen to carry the book. Then the phoenix flew away, dropping a single blazing plume at Ziegfried’s feet.

Clutching the warm feather, Ziegfried fell asleep. In the morning, he heard Zieglinde calling his name. She had returned carrying a book with black covers, just as the phoenix had foretold. Ziegfried asked her sister to show him the book, but she refused, claiming it her own.

Ziegfried got upset. Her sister was being selfish, and that made her unworthy of the book. The siblings got into a fight, and Ziegfried knocked his sister down with a jolt of electricity, seizing the book.

"You want to finish the story? Fine, be my guest. Just stop pretending that this family or its fate has any impact on you,"

Posted

"Family may mean nothing to the two of you, but then again it doesn't seem like anything means anything to you anymore. I can't say I haven't felt the same way sometimes, but I care about my family, even though I was kept from them for so many years."

Arthur reads out the last few passages--the ones detailing the family's dark fate. " Unfortunately Zieglinde fell directly on a bog eye and got stuck in the sinking mire. She pleaded her brother to pull her up, but Ziegfried steeled himself. He now had the book, and Zieglinde would only try to take it away from him again.

The distressed father went to look for her, and never returned. Ziegfried became the master of the black book, and history became to know him as one of the most powerful wizards that ever lived."

Arthur turns to the others. "Don't you see? That book, that ancient black grimoire...I'd wager a great deal that I know that tome. Surely at least one of you has heard of the Pandemonicon, have you not?"

Posted

"You care about your family, yes, but this family obviously doesn't care about you. Why would they leave you alone for so many years, hm? This child is, what, your second cousin once removed? You're one small step from a stranger to her. You weren't hired here as a family courtesy. You were hired as a mercenary. Just like me, just like Alexis. You know what a family is? People who care for each other. Biology has a play in it sometimes, but that is not what makes a family. You don't get to come in here and proclaim yourself as an important part of this family when, evidently, you are not."

He pulls himself back. "Does the Pandemonicans involvement surprise you? It was found with the remains of an essential member of this family," he jests. "It seems to be linked to the eatress, who is in return linked to this family, evidently. I've done my reading since Babeleth."

Posted

"I never claimed to be important to this family. That's part of why I'm here--to prove to Lilly and all of our family how important they are to me." He stops, the question of why his heritage had been hidden from him hitting uncomfortably close to home. "I don't know why my mother chose to hide the truth from me," he says softly, "but whatever the reason, I know now, which means I have a lot to do in order to live up to my heritage."

"I knew of Sycamore Ziegfried and her dealings with the Black Grimoire, yes. But I had no idea how deeply the book ran with this family." Arthur glances at Alexis, somewhat exasperated by the total lack of concern she'd shown thus far. "Zoot," he says, hoping to snap in her focus, "is apparently quite strongly connected to both sides of my family. Sometimes with these things, blood matters...it matters a lot, actually. I'm worried for Lilly, now more than ever. If we aren't careful, something terrible could happen. We can't let that happen. If you have any inklings of what might lie ahead, now would be the time to share them."

As the heroes pieced together the tragic story of Ziegfried and Zieglinde, the shadows in the corners grew and the bedroom darkened.

heroicanpc-lillyziegfried2.jpg

"Not that story!" Lilly muttered as the heroes read the story out loud. "It's the worst of them all! Why did the girl had to die? Why couldn't she become a powerful sorceress instead of her killer brother?"

Once the story was correctly finished, someone snatched the book from Arthur's hands.

heroicaquest125-bedroom2.jpg

heroicaquest125-thenanny.jpg

"The end."

heroicanpc-lillyziegfried2.jpg

"Waaah!!! A ghost!"

heroicaquest125-thenanny.jpg

"Power is not for little girls. That is the morale of that story. All you have to do is to be nice and do as you are told."

The ghastly woman that had appeared in front of them had a dry, monotonous voice that seeped loathing towards the girl. Her long black dress was veiled in the shadows that had overtaken the room.

What would the heroes do next?

"Power is for no one but the select few. Obviously, you've been enthralled with this book for so long you failed to realize that." Althior grips his scepter, "We're some of those who hold the power. Care for a demonstration?"
