Heroica RPG- Quest #122: Invasion of the Sheep Snatchers

Matthias moves to heal Whisperer, but the Black Knight downs a potion instead, and as the Phoenix Essence changes hands the gnome wonders whether the tall Munchkin even realizes there's a healer in the party.

He ignores the strange purple-and-green being's further demands, but waits for her response to Berthadhiell's diplomatic words, having seen such techniques bear fruit in the past. Matthias winces a little as Whisperer continues to provoke the fight, but can't help agree; he continues to ready his cannon.

"Twenty-one years. If they beam us up, we will all perish similarly." Purpearl shakes her head. "Agitating our otherworldly guest Hero will not do you any favours."

"Twenty-one years. If they beam us up, we will all perish similarly."

"Nyet to that, if they beam us up they'll be doing us a favor. Think of the loot, the equipment, all up there, just waiting for us..."

Purpearl shakes her head. "Agitating our otherworldly guest Hero will not do you any favours."

"Sorry, Mystic, but I have this thing about uninvited guests." The Munchkin thrashed the whip once, his eyes gleaming - clearly the Mead he had consumed was beginning to take effect.

"Kaz." Purpearl calls out and proceeds in a dilpomatic manner, hoping that her gamble would pay off on other worldly beings. "Olegaia isn't a place where you can rest your limb on a rock and make demands while you brandish your mechanical pipes in the air at the same time. Also, it is very unintelligent to make demands infront of kind hosts like us that lays your subordinates on grass soft enough for them to rest on while we wait for you to pick them up. We're benevolent beings, and we are always open to parley. You are intelligent and so are we." Momentarily drawing her attention to Kaz's shiny epaulettes and her beautiful out-of-the-world top. "You know, never mind the sheep you've already taken, but you took some of our kind that dwelled here in this settlement. Perhaps between you and me, as females, we can work something out. Agreeable Kaz?" Purpearl rests her leg on the back of one of the fallen Grunts, indicating the party's authority over the situation, yet nice enough to open conversation to crease out this possible misunderstanding.

Kaz looks over Purpearl, taking her in and surprisingly listening.

"People? I have only recently been taken charge of this operation and have not heard of the abduction of "people". However, if it is so rude for myself to make such demands, why does the idiotic and foolish metal man make demands in front of me and my fleet?"

The Black Knight chuckled, mixed a Mead with a Potion, and swigged them both down. He casually tossed the bottle over his shoulder in a direction he knew that no one was standing, and listened to it shatter on a rock.

"So, since you were clearly joking, as no one could possibly take that as a threat, will the payment be in hand-cannons or in supplies? Because if it's the former, then we'll be needing a lot more of them - difficulty to liquidate, don't you know."

"Oh, I've got everything under control, believe me. Except for you, but it's very hard to keep a toddler throwing a temper tantrum under control."

The Black Knight carefully moved so that he was standing directly in front of the Beserker, so that anything that was aimed or fired at her would have to take him out first. He also gently nudged a Phoenix Essence into Sorsha's hand.

"If you don't end up using that, I'll be needing that back." He muttered.

"As he does now!" Kaz replies, directing her words at Purpearl, yet pointing her hand cannons at Lind. "I assure you, the first blast will kill you, foolish metal man, the second will kill the grumpy female."

"LIND? WHAT ARE YOU DOING? YOU'RE GOING TO GET US ALL KILLED!"

"Oh, you little pathetic parasite, I thoroughly enjoy your fantasies." She quips. "I was going to shoot you on the spot, but now I think I want you as a pet! Very well, fellow creature with two Y chromosomes," she directs towards Purpearl, "I will give you an offer. I will leave here for now, but I want the metal man. I do not expect he will ever see this place again, but I will spare the wooly creatures for now in exchange for him. Oh, how I simply want to watch him squirm in a cage!"

"Fun times for everyone!"

What does the party do?

"People? I have only recently been taken charge of this operation and have not heard of the abduction of "people". However, if it is so rude for myself to make such demands, why does the idiotic and foolish metal man make demands in front of me and my fleet?"

"Oh, I'm being rude too - no argument there.

Logically, there are only two ways this plays out - either we kill you, or, you kill us, and then later on, some other heroes come and kill you. Properly, I should be supporting the first option - and I do. I just thought, when there's a lack of options, what's really preventing us from making a new one?

Sure, it's heavily slanted in our favor - but that's how bargaining works. And when the other party's either going to kill you, or have someone else kill you later - well, you don't really have too much room to argue with them over the deal.

On a side note, I'd also like to make a complaint: I feel rather offended as being referred to as the "metal man." - That's a blatant case of elemental profiling."

The Black Knight's face didn't quite turn as dark as it had earlier, but although the mead was still flowing through his veins, his face still lost its frivolity.

"You're near the threshold of doors you can't see, and you're walkin' blind. And I can't be held responsible for what happens if you don't turn around."

The seriousness faded away as soon as it came. "That being said, I am offended at such a low offer for me."

Purpearl exerts her voice diplomatically once more towards Kaz, taking into consideration the possibility of a certain aleck who smartly volunteered to dig his own grave as well as bringing an end to Chief Tarlock's hopes of ever getting a grandchild from her beloved daughter. "Interesting to hear that, not trying to accuse a Hero of your stature, but there are indeed people missing from this village who were accidentally beamed up together with the sheep." Purpearl continues, "If Hero Kaz would ignore the drunkard, the conversation between us and you, less the drunkard, would proceed in a more mature and much more smoothly than you would expect. If sheep is what you desire, perhaps the village and you could work out a deal that is beneficial for both sides. Beaming up sheep as and when you desire could only get you so much. How many can you get each time, a couple? Depending on luck?" Indicating a very minute and small number with her fingers as Purpearl steps forward, "If the Chief and the village is agreeable to this, the village could potentially trade sheep or sheep products for resources from wherever you come from. Thereby creating a winning formula."

Turning to Sorsha, "Would your father agree to a trade you reckon? Depending what the Others offer, the village could potentially sell off rare resources to generate extra revenue, gold for your village. But if the Others refuse, you can forget that I ever brought it up."

Turning back to Kaz, "How does that sound, Hero Kaz?"

[Siercon and Coral]

Siercon mused at the conversation between two parties so fully ignorant of the other. It was also his joy to remain silent and under the radar from self superior space queen. He toyed with various words to introduce himself with, or interject into the conversation, but hadn't settled on any just quite yet. "Poor Lind" he thought, "He would be so lost and trapped in what can best be described as a 'sky submarine.' and Purpearl... I fear a lifetime of inflated species superiority was never going to be won over with a little diplomacy." But he wasn't going to stop either efforts.

Siercon figured it may be time to test the waters. Addressing the egotistic gecko he said "You seem contented conversing solely with those who speak to you, and proceeding to label all associates inferior. Do you pair intellect with assertion? I am waiting for you to bring more to aspire fear than just your prideful assertion." He paused. "I will start... I'm afraid I will not allow you to have any of my carbon based friend." Siercon lowered his hood clearly revealing he was not a carbon based life form.

Matthias wonders briefly whether Whisperer could really take a hit from the 'handcannon' pointed towards the Black Knight, and does his best to signal the man to keep his mouth shut and let the diplomatic knight do the talking.

"I have had enough of this squabbling, and I've made up my mind!" Kaz shouts, guns still pointed at Lind. "As much as you seek peace, diplomatic woman, your male friends seem to seek violence, as well as contradict your statements. That and you refuse to hand over both the sheep and the tin-pet. So if it's a violent solution they want, they shall receive it!"

Kaz reaches for her belt and lifts a device to her mouth, beginning to shout orders in an incomprehensible language. She place it back to her mouth, and as she does so a great rumble rocks the cliffs as mechanical pieces begin to drop from the airships, creating themselves into a large, three legged machine with an imposing gun on it, barely fitting on the cliffside. The party can see a few of the Others working inside of the three story-sized mech. Sorsha seems intimidated for once by the machine in front of her.

"It's gonna rain fire! And tacos!"

"I will smush like worms! WOOORMS!!"

The Black Knight nervously flails at Tactician Kaz with the Chaotic Whip.

Matthias' frustration is plain as the big tripod assembles itself. "We couldn't have just given them Lind and let them go in peace?" he says to Berthadhiell, only half in jest. The joke and the Black Knight's whimpering seem to perk up the Druid's attitude, though, and he turns his attention to battle, deciding to pick on someone his own size. "Master Lind, time to put your money where your mouth is. Lady Purpearl, can you electrocute that tripod? Master Siercon, Miss Sorsha, the grunts please."

QM Note: It seems I forgot to finish Kaz's first special. It's now remedied with a rather nasty, but still fair special if you work it to the party's favour. This round had some rough patches, but this battle should be winnable with some clever planning. Also, since Lind stole some stuff, I'll have some of the loot pictures up shortly.

"I was forced into a non-diplomatic solution by the actions your male friends took, and you can tell that to the other meat bags surrounding you!"

"Hehe, meat bags."

Purpearl attempts to fire more lightning at the large ATD, but is cut short when one of it's legs crashes into the ground, sending Purpearl and Lind into the air, as well as a few sheep, who then begin to huddle back around the party, seemingly unhurt. Lind and Purpearl get up, only bruised, while Lind dashes for Kaz and lashes out at her with his borrowed whip, snagging her stuff in the process. He rushes back to the party as Kaz furiously blasts her two hand cannons at him. Siercon is seriously wounded by a blast from one of the grunts while Sorsha begins intimidating another. Matthais readies his Cannonball Extraordinaire, only to find Gik charge him! The miniature robot, about the same size of the druid, begins viciously beating on him, electrical surges digging into him with every punch. Eventually Gik recedes, but not before leaving some burn marks on the gnome.

The battle continues!

OoC: Lind and I have the same outlook on loot - everyone contributes something to the battle, even if it's just receiving free hits for a thousand rounds. Ergo, all loot looted* should be split up equally among the party, with each member getting as exactly equal a share as possible. Sure, some people will contribute more, and some will contribute less, but no one goes home empty-handed. So you see, it's actually in Lind's best interests to be generous.

That's not to say that Lind won't try to bargain for "first dibs" on loot picking, etc., and if there's an extremely rare and expensive artifact that he loots and needs, I won't promise that I'll always be following the "everything is group loot" methodology, but I try to stick to it whenever I can.

*With the exception of "free-range" looting.

The Chaotic Whip does have light embedded in it - did that do double damage, or did the dark cancel it out?

That's true; but loot that a character steals doesn't fall into the Party Leader's jurisdiction.
