hello every body! i have recently acquired a used copy of the legendary 8421. For the people that dont know this set was released in 2005 and has 1884 pieces. I have decided to to the B model. if you want to see the review of the a model you can find it here (http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=73768) posted by Lost_In_Noise

First you need to build the truck for loss of a better word. Which is the same for the A or B models

Here you can see the build options you have with this manual.

To do the b model you turn to page 97.

After 10 pages it looks like this

So i have connected the turn table and the pneumatic cylinders

After 10 or so more pages it looks like this

16301729606_2f42d2ce5d_c.jpg

I have added the pneumatic switch, two clutch gears one twenty tooth bevel gear. one twelve tooth bevel, two twenty tooth double bevel gears

and one 24 tooth gear and the buggy motor

Now the other half of the boom has been made. This part of the boom extends the basket out. To do that you need to add the 32 axle

Five gear racks one twelve tooth bevel, two eight tooth gears, one twenty tooth gear and a worm gear

Next you connect the two half`s together

now that`s done last step is to add the basket

All done in the next pic you can see what you are left with

Here a a few pic of the completed model

Really good review !

I juz started technic a year ago and being a construction fan, my first was the 42009. Then I came to know that it had 2 previous precursors and when I wanted to get my hands on them, the prices didn't allow me to. So I'll juz have to settle for photos of them :)

8421 was a bit expensive but I had to have it. I only have one issue with the set, the power cable did not connect very well to the battery box or motor. For the members that do have this set is it the same with yours or have I just got a faulty cable

Just dragged out the trusty tape. To the the light at the end of the boom we get 63 cm

i did not include pictures of the stabilizers diploid here we go

and some with the boom folding up

the other thing that i felt was lacking was the fact that the super structure has to be rotated by hand would have been nice

but there is the room for improvement

Huh, have had the 8421 for some time, but the 'b' model really didn't look that impressive, and it seemed like an impossiblity to get a Technic figure onto the platform cause it didn't come all the way down to the bed of the chassis. Now that I'm seeing a full photo review, which is very well done indeed, I might just have to build that version. I hate taking apart Technic, chafes your thumbs and index fingers, especially in the dry skin season in North America, luckily I took apart the crane a long while ago. After finishing a couple MOCs I will be building this.

I've always thought, even with the issues with pneumatic cylinders not being able to hold the crane boom up for more than a day or so, that the 8421 rivaled the 42009 in many respects, or maybe its just nostalgia for me since it was the first big Technic set I bought. One thing about the 42009 is one would have thought with the many PF elements available that by now we could have a mobile crane where the superstructure turned with a motor rather than by hand since technology has come a long way since 2005.
