thetang22 Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Quick off-topic question: Why is this thread still caled Castle 2016, when we know that this theme is called Nexo Knights? I've suggested it multiple times but ZCerberus refuses to do anything until there's an official word from LEGO. He's also said SEVERAL times for people to stop bringing it up. Talking about whether this is Castle or not, for the sake of discussing Lego's future plans in relation to this theme is one thing. But asking "shouldn't we move this thread"...over, and over, and OVER, and OVER, and OVER....after the mods have said several times not to is getting pretty annoying. Quote
Kalhiki Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Edit* found them, I don't want to be a debbie downer but that is honestly one of the worst LEGO themes I have ever seen. It's like a terrible attempt at some sort of return to Retro Castle-Space theme done really really poorly. That's my problem with it. Couldn't find the words to describe it. The sets do look very retro, and I'm not sure if I like that. I prefer the more clean and sleek look modern Lego sets have. I mean, I like old sets, but not for this day and age. Quote
TenorPenny Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Bear in mind; it's a theme (and a toy) for kids. Not necessarily for you. TLG has clearly moved into a world in which there are adult orientated sets made especially (also made for adult wallets. Ouch) for grown-ups who want certain things and sets for children who like the idea of giant swords on wheels. Quote
dzidek1983 Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 As a castle builder i'm not appealed to any of the new sets. We have there 6 sets that are vehicle based, so forr me this is a clear sign thats its space and sci-fi aligned as castle was always a structure campaign. Furthermore, half of the minifigs dot even have arms and the robots are brick-built not figs. Only thing linking this to castle are couple of helmets, some weaponry and thats it. Just take those away, put a laser gun in figs hand and you have a new ninjago. And LEGO doesnt even decline that. This is a Ninjago follower. Its a set for boys to collect and play just as ninjago was, it has the same factors. Differnet sets are designed to have different powers, so they have a collectability factor. The big point for making this theme was: Boys love the iconic-knight themed models with tech upgrades and the scary yet funny monsters and their vehicles. As said before as a castle builder i have nothing to look in those sets besides couple of unique parts i will probably get eventually at BL. Most of the "vehicles" are built using LEGO Technic parts with addition of Space parts. everything is kept in a totaly non-castle themed colors (to much blue, to much orange) Quote
8BrickMario Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Fair enough. I think this theme's relation to Castle is a bit complicated. It has all the classic themes, but not the same spirit. Yes, there's a jester, wizard, king, and knights, but the designs of the sets are hi-tech and wacky, and so far there aren't any locations. So for now, it's very similar in approach to Chima, which has fewer buildings than Ninjago, but it has a similar tone and enemies to Ninjago, what with dark enemies from an evil realm attacking a technological society with old-fashioned ideas. Just one question: Did Merlok use the classic witch hat, or the S12 Wizard's? Quote
x105Black Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 (edited) I haven't seen Merlock myself. I'd like to know more, as well. I'm hoping it's the classic hat. I'm betting, however, that it has some silly logo plastered onto it. Edited September 20, 2015 by x105Black Quote
Admiral Khan Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 I agree with most everyone here that the images show a very dissapointing theme that presents no appeal to me. The only hope I have for this theme is perhaps the torsos underneath the large bulky armor piece's of the knights, but other than that, it looks like a wasted theme in my opinion. Quote
TPLSTER21 Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Question: I have only seen the pics that have the six smallest sets. Are pics of the Ultimates, Castle and Jestro's Companions of Darkness out there? Comments and Observations on sets: - Hero side has the Nexo Knights themselves, Knights that aren't NK's and the little Robo-Knights - Nexo Knight's shields are dual purpose and can be used as hoverboards - nice touch - The Bull Knight definitely looks larger than the others and may be a "bulked-up" minifig - I think he comes with the castle set - Villians look to be a variety of creatures - mini lava monster things, mohawk guys, Moltor, Jestro, Giant Cyclops, etc. - None of those prelim sets have stickers or printed pieces which will only make them look better 70310: Uses the same friction launch mechanism for the disks from NInjago summer wave, generic non NK Knight. Bad guys looks to have the new crossbow. 70311: Looks like the enemy minifg sits "inside" the mouth on the front of the catapult. It almost looks like the model has trans orange rock-arms on the side so maybe the catapult is some kind of creature or mech...? Enemy fig has new "short spring loaded shooter". 70312: Robo-horse has some kind of secondary function with that wheel. Disappointed that it only has flick-fires. A bit of a shortcut on play features given recent weapon advances. 70313: I'm not even sure what this is at this point. Looks like the main feature is the up-down motion of the 2 orange rock-thinks on either side. Which I guess means it's a ground vehicle, but can't see that it has any means of locomotion. Central part of vehicle looks like it's just a big rock with teeth on the front...very weird. Minifig driving the vehicle has large gauntlets. Can't tell if if is larger than a regular minifig. Need better pics of this one. 70314: Main feature is opening and closing of "chompy mouths" at front of the podracer. Flying mecha-horse thing looks cool. 70315: Must have some kind of play-feature using the giant blade. A set at that piece-count price range has to have more features than just a shooter on the back of it. There also seems to be some kind of small build for the viking guy on the box that didn't make it into the pic, which would be expected for this level of build. You can tell from the box art that one of the small lava monsters is included with this set. Interested to see better pics eventually and also the other 3 sets. I think there are 2 retail exclusives which we will also see eventually. Quote
Robert8 Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Just one question: Did Merlok use the classic witch hat, or the S12 Wizard's? There are not pics of the Merlock / King sets yet Quote
CM4Sci Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 (edited) Wow, didn't expect so much hate for this theme. Guessing I shouldn't be surprised considering all you guys want is another classic Castle theme, : Merlok used the classic wizard hat I think. Edited September 20, 2015 by CM4Sci Quote
Robert8 Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Well, considering that Castle 2013 was somewhat similar to KK1, I'd say there is trend KK1 -> Castle 2013 KK2 -> Nexo Knights Fantasy Era -> ??? So, next time we'll get something with Fantasy Era style The question is when Quote

JasonEffex Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 I like what I see so far. Well, most of what I see. 70310 is the only one so far that I actually dislike, the shape of it just looks a bit too weird for me. However, I do like the knight minifig with the recoloured Hero Factory armour piece. The Robo Horse does look like it transforms, I can see another wheel just behind where Lance sits. I think 70313 looks the best out of these six. For those confused about what it is, it used power miners wheels on the sides that look to be able to make the 'fists' move up and down as it's rolled around. The larger two look cool, but they both seem like they're a minifigure short for their price. The line up looks pretty good in for an action theme, hopefully they'll be some structures later on. I am also very much looking forward to seeing two bigger big sets. Quote
Aanchir Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Only thing linking this to castle are couple of helmets, some weaponry and thats it. Just take those away, put a laser gun in figs hand and you have a new ninjago. While I agree with you that the spirit of this theme is very akin to Ninjago, this sentence confused me. Ninjago has hardly any laser guns, at least of the hand-held variety. The only laser-gun-like minifigure weapons I can think of over five years of sets are General Cryptor's laser rocket launcher in set 70721 and Jay's lightning weapon in 70731. Otherwise all of the lasers tend to be on mechs and vehicles. If you'd said Chima the comparison might have made more sense. But really, on a conceptual level, the theme is definitely a re-imagining of LEGO Castle. Sort of a "what if LEGO Castle happened in the future?" theme. Personally, I'm not sure if the designs appeal to me. It doesn't seem to have so much of the sculptural elegance and thematic unity that helped draw me to Ninjago and Chima. I will still give the story a look, and that might turn out to be the deciding factor. But with Elves, Ninjago, and Bionicle returning next year I don't know how much room I will be able to make for this theme in my plans for next year. I will say I like the little flying robot horse in the Chaos Chariot set better than the big one. And the theme as a whole has a lot of creativity — love those ball creatures! Quote
SirBlake Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 there just was a classic castle theme though, right? 2013? And before that one was one classier still. Didn't you like that? edit - I meant all of you out there not Sci 2013 was boring, but at least had good bones. Even though I was disappointed with that theme, I still bought most sets because heraldry aside, there was lots of good to be had. Kingdoms was perfect to me. The only downside is that it didn't last long enough. I've already expressed my opinion on this new junk, so I won't belabor the point. Suffice it to say that there appears to be basically nothing that can live within the rest of the Lego castle universe. Disappointment doesn't begin to cover this useless theme or the drought that is likely ahead for those of us that prefer a more traditionally medieval/fantasy setting. Well, considering that Castle 2013 was somewhat similar to KK1, I'd say there is trend KK1 -> Castle 2013 KK2 -> Nexo Knights Fantasy Era -> ??? So, next time we'll get something with Fantasy Era style The question is when I don't think that represents a trend we can count on, though I do expect the pendulum to swing toward something more classic when this Nexo nonsense has run its course. Gadzooks Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 (edited) 70315 looks like it splits into two cycles with the robo-knights and a flying thing with the giant sword on the front. Anyone else notice this? Edited September 20, 2015 by Gadzooks Quote
Pulp Detective Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 While I do agree that most of the vehicles look god awful and the lack of locations is disappointing(I mean even the castle is mobile!!!) my main draw for this theme are the minifigures themeselves. From what I've seen so far from the catalogue cover they look perfect with great detail, new molds(armors, helmets, weapons etc)and the only nitpick I have is how plain and boring are the heroes face prints but other than that I'm satisfied with this theme.I mean seriously an evil jester,a mage/king,knights with future tech...what's not like??!! PenPlays Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 (edited) Wow, didn't expect so much hate for this theme. Guessing I shouldn't be surprised considering all you guys want is another classic Castle theme, : The issue is that this is in the wrong forum. This thread belongs in the action themes forum now. The majority of haters are castle purists expecting something more of their cup-of-tea. Once this thread moves, there won't even be near enough negative comments. People expecting an action theme will look at it from the perspective of an action theme, rather than a Castle theme if it was there. I personally think the sets look fantastic, and the concept is genius. I'm really looking forward to what will be coming out of this theme, and that futuristic looking city/castle in the background certainly has me excited, especially if it ends up as a set! I also really love the old-school look these things have. Gives me a good nineties Lego vibe. The Ice Planet colors sweeten the deal. Edited September 20, 2015 by Penkid11 Quote
Zergos Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 All this hate when its just prelims. Sure it's not the castle theme everyone wants, but it still provides awesome parts. Quote
azog Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 i don't like the new theme but i expected it because when i heard it was replacing chima i knew that it would not be like a normal castle line. but on the other hand i might want to buy some of the sets because of that new crossbow Quote
8BrickMario Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Yes, I do imagine that much of the hatred comes from the letdown, i.e., people expecting this to be a normal Castle theme and finding out that it's a sci-fi Castle theme with an action-theme style. However, I appreciate the new take on Castle, as a more traditional one might be repetitive or boring. If you need LEGO Castle in your life that badly, build something, and be very patient. Jestro might be my new favorite LEGO villain. I love evil jesters, and he's so creepily crazy! Quote

I like my castles with horses, grey bricks and mutton! if I wanted future space stuff then I would be a space or star wars collector. I mean they might as well just have given the nexo knights light sabers. Bear in mind; it's a theme (and a toy) for kids. Not necessarily for you. TLG has clearly moved into a world in which there are adult orientated sets made especially (also made for adult wallets. Ouch) for grown-ups who want certain things and sets for children who like the idea of giant swords on wheels. The only problem with this is that there are no castle or pirate themed sets for adults. They have creator (great if your a city builder), fantastic $300 Star Wars sets (again great if your a star wars guy). But HEY LEGO!! where is the Ultimate Collector series Pirate ship and castle? Where is the castle and pirate creator sets? The most expensive castle and pirate sets were only $100. I would have paid more money for a great castle or ship! Lego started out with great castle and pirates, then they have been slowly drifting away from them. It use to be you could buy a castle set and a pirate set both in the same year. Now they just alternate between the two and they keep getting worse. Quote
CM4Sci Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Thought my drawings and descriptions were descriptive enough to tell/show this wasn't a Castle theme. Maybe people hadn't seen them yet, I dunno. Quote
Dannylonglegs Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 In regards to the this topic's name and placement, I think the name should be changed so that the question mark falls just after the word castle, as opposed to after the 2016. But seriously, it does say it's a knight theme, and it may even end up being listed as a castle theme, but it is not an historic theme. Definitely Action. As a sci-fi fan primarily, I recognize that a lot of the new pieces in this will be useful for Sci-fi builds. I will certainly try to get my hand on some of the armour pieces. They look like they have a lot of potential for space marines... altogether my collection of space marines is pretty nice and diverse as it is. Interesting that the crossbow piece is new and different from chewie's. I can't wait to see a better picture of them. From what I can tell they remind me of the Baracca squid shooters. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote
