Lord Vladivus Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 I like the evil guys. The rest not so much. I'll wait for some reviews before I splash out on any sets to see what the parts are like. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Oh, hey. This is in Action and Adventure now. Hi! I love the new books that are included. But then again I love books. I'm liking the colour scheme and a lot of the new elements. Hopefully this will last, filling the spot vacated by Chima and Ultra Agents. Quote
Dannylonglegs Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Just like LOTR or Fanstasy Era Medievalist fantasy... set in a world superficially resembling the medieval historical period, due to presence of castles, knights, and technologies no more advanced than pre-renaissance Europe (and when exceptions to this rule exist they are common sense and limited). I'd say they are perfect fits for the Historic forum... better fits than Rock Raiders for a not-Sci-fi forum, at least. Nope! This theme has found its perfect forum and I'm very pleased about it! thank you, Mods for tolerating us plebeien folk and our oh-so important debates regarding theme-forum placement! ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote
x105Black Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Hopefully this will last, filling the spot vacated by Chima and Ultra Agents. It seems like it will fill both of those niches quite well. And for those who are into this theme, I certainly hope that it will last. It also seems like it will work in tandem with Elves. Elves is "fantasy for girls" while this is "fantasy for boys." I am hopeful that some sort of Castle or Fantasy theme will show up that works in between those particular niches, "fantasy regardless of gender." Quote
mediumsnowman Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 I wasn't too excited about this theme, but the sets look nice. They may be worth picking up just for all the lovely new parts. Quote
Capt Winters Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 I'm not sure if anyone answered my question from yesterday, but does anyone know if the "Ultimate Sets" are going to be like the buildable figures from the Star Wars line? Quote
Dr_Chronos Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 (edited) I'm not sure if anyone answered my question from yesterday, but does anyone know if the "Ultimate Sets" are going to be like the buildable figures from the Star Wars line? No, think more like Minifig equipment packs. From the "Way to Battle" trailer you can see both Clay's (twin propellers attached to the back) and Lance's (A cross between wings and shoulder shields) Ultimate forms. Speaking of the Ultimates, I wonder if they will be displayed soon? Edited October 9, 2015 by Dr_Chronos Quote
Dannylonglegs Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 (edited) I bet Merlock will appear in a set as a mini figure eventually. Likely next wave. Either transparent or gold, IMO. It also seems like it will work in tandem with Elves. Elves is "fantasy for girls" while this is "fantasy for boys." I am hopeful that some sort of Castle or Fantasy theme will show up that works in between those particular niches, "fantasy regardless of gender." That would be quite welcome! perhaps it would include some civilian sets too, and several more female figures than the usual, like wives for the soldiers, farmers, innkeepers, servants for the queen, etc. That would make the theme more appealing to girls, certainly, as would more detailed appearing models (win-win). Actually, I quite like the Elves theme, and think that perhaps if it wasn't a mini-dolls theme it'd be my favorite on the market right now just because of the attention to detail and delightful (well designed) models and novel coloured pieces available therein. The models are all quite appealing cosmetically as well, which is more than can be said for Nexo Knights. Nexo Knights doesn't quite appeal to me like the models from Elves, or even the first wave of Chima did, TBH. Chima had some really clever animal-shaped builds and a very cohesive aesthetic. With Nexo Knights there are quite a few models (the Castle, the sword car, the heinous horse) that are really underwhelming appearing and don't seem to have a very well integrated design compared to most sets from those themes. But to end this on a not-negative note, the figures from Nexo Knights are much more reusable than those of Chima (even though they were anthro-animals!) And many of the figures here are really really good looking! Like Macy and Aaron's new faces! ~Insectoid Aristocrat Edited October 9, 2015 by Dannylonglegs Quote
kevkipo Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Like i said 3 new swords? a new form of epic to me Quote
8BrickMario Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 I'm less interested in the hero stuff, but I think the villain sets look great. They're very strange and threatening at the same time, while the Fortrex is the only knights set that doesn't strike me as "generic". Quote
BrickFit26 Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 (edited) I didn't think of it as embarrassing so much as showing off how their tech is advanced. And I don't think it has anything to do with the Castle fans that hate this theme. You'll notice they did this to other characters as well, not just classic Castle knights. However, viewing these videos showed me a few more things. They're showing a new skirt piece here for Macy in her princess gown: The outfit is a bit futuristic, but possibly still useful. I wonder if we will be seeing this type of skirt in the future, or this version of Macy in a future set. Here's this guy again, this time as an archer: I like this guy, and wonder if he's a recurring character on the show. If so, maybe we'll see a set with him in the future. He looks a bit more like the Robin Hood figure a lot of people were hoping for, albeit slightly futuristic with that bright blue color and line pattern. Still, he's one of the better looking characters so far. Then there's this guy: That's a nice design that could be very useful for Castle themed building. I hope we see more of these civilian type characters, as they have a lot more potential for me than any of the sci-fi knights. This is not what makes them childish. It's the design aesthetic. It's the personality and tone. And yes, there were some more childish, unsophisticated sets in Castle (and definitely in Space) over the years. As a whole, however, I feel that Nexo Knights is considerably more childish, thematically, than most Caslte waves. Basically this. The concept itself is what's more childish. And about the idea that this theme is or isn't a Castle theme: In my opinion, this screenshot from the LEGO website is as close as we can get to an official statement on the matter, which is that they are not the same. It also highlights the glaring differences between the concepts, which are only superficially similar. I'm hoping that by keeping the Castle theme there, we can expect an actual Castle theme sometime in the near future. That gives me a lot of hope. Then again, they only show sets from the 2013 wave, and neither Castle nor Nexo Knights appear on their shopping site. Either way, I'm holding out hope that they will release a good Castle wave sometime soon, maybe 2017, since it will have been 4 years since the last one in 2013. I hope they do end up making that new skirt piece, looks better than the original slope piece we get for some female minifigs Edited October 10, 2015 by Peppermint_M No picture quotes please. Quote

The minidolls are the deal-breaker for me. That and the cutesy animals. I actually really like some of the animal molds, but the tramp stamps on their faces throw me off, and some of them are definitely more cutesy than they need to be. But overall, I like the version of fantasy that they present. As for Chima, they relied too heavily on the animal motif. Everything was an animal. It was overkill. I'm less interested in the hero stuff, but I think the villain sets look great. They're very strange and threatening at the same time, while the Fortrex is the only knights set that doesn't strike me as "generic". I agree, but only as far as the look of the minifigures are concerned. They do look cool, and very dark. But from what I'm seeing in the trailers, they aren't very dark in the context of the show. They look like they might not pose a serious threat to the heroes and their Tron-like energy weapons. Or maybe it's just the red balls and evil globs that are doofy, and the minifigure characters will actually be dark. Edited October 9, 2015 by x105Black Quote
DraikNova Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 So that little girl is indeed holding a gaming console. Huh. Now, given it's Nexo Knights, and given the new parts, it's actually a little disappointing for me that hardly any of those seem to fit into a traditional Castle layout the way I had hoped, except the queen and (maybe) Lance's visor and Macy's plume. Actually, it turns out that was really her hair. Quote
ZORK64 Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 (edited) Whoa, this topic kinda exploded over the reveal, didn't it? Well anyway, here are my thoughts: - Generally, I really love the Space Marine-esque design of the Knights, I may or may not pick up some of these. - Axl became far less interesting to me, as the horns of his visor are indeed too wide for my planned use. However, I will probably switch to either Lance's or Clay's visor instead. In fact, I think Lance's helmet visor will work better, even though I don't like that the visor has a little plastic thingy in its middle. But anyway, they allow me to stick with the purist road. - On that note, it's kinda unfortunate for me that Clay's helmet is dark blue, not regular blue. - I love the new wall panels and the ball-jointed lava monster. Too bad both of these are mostly in the two bigger sets of the line. - The baddies have many great ideas. I don't care much for Jestro, but his mooks are wonderful. - I like the new weapons, especially Clay's Space Sword and Axl's Space Axe. - The new more generic looking parts (the shield part that is also used in Fortrex, the pyramids) are also promising and beautiful. - Oh, and of course, TANK CASTLE! The animated shorts are nice, but I'm not sure I will pay much attention to the show. Overall, this theme looks more appealing to me than Ninjago or Chima, probably because it combines fantasy knight stuff with SPAAAAAACE, and that is the kind of stuff I totally dig. Being more of a Constraction MOCist however, it's more likely that I will only buy sets that provide pieces useful for brickbuild constraction, like my Transformers MOCs. Some of the helmets and maybe the weapons may be useful for that (not to mention the Fire Golem torso). The minifig armour meanwhile could be very useful for making SPEHS MEHREENS. danth Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 (edited) The minidolls are the deal-breaker for me. That and the cutesy animals. I decided that the only way I'll ever accept minidolls is if they bring back Fabuland and use the minidolls with animal heads. Since the old Fabuland figures were not standard minifigs, I can rationalize this. Edited October 9, 2015 by danth Quote

DraikNova Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Considering the shorts and that big banner show it as her hair, I'm going to assume it's attached normally. Quote
Mr Greeble Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Huh. I was hyped wayyyyy more for the bad guys before the final pics, and now it's the complete opposite. Except for the Beast Master. He's still awesome. The new books and shields are amazing, but the new weapons take the top with me. Gotta have more o' those weapons. Quote
x105Black Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Considering the shorts and that big banner show it as her hair, I'm going to assume it's attached normally. Normally? Not sure what that means. Yes, it is intended to be her hair. But with her helmet on, from what I've seen, it is a piece that attaches to her visor in the same way a plume would, and could therefore be used as a plume. To those who have seen it in person, can you confirm or deny that? Quote

The cool thing about this is that we have also seen her as having hair. I think we may get a new hair mold with an accessory hole to fit the ponytail plume piece! It just seems so brilliant! I really hope we do see this in a set where she is without her helmet. Also this means she can do the thing I always wanted to with my bike helmet when I had a ponytail, and stick the thing through the hole! That is a rationalization I can understand. Agreed. Ardelon Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Nice to see this thread settling down in a more fitting forum. Maybe the discussion here will become a little less tense. But as for the „childishness“ debate, I do think that by pursuing the „coolness“ factor, like sticking jet engines or glowing energy weapons or hoverboards in historical-themed settings is a mark of this theme being childish. In other words, the practice of incogruously mixing „cool“ stuff from various areas (or historical periods, in this case) to keep kids with short attention spans excited, instead of focusing on well-rounded themes with their own pluses and minuses – like for example, accepting that a characteristic of castle/medieval/fantasy settings is a low tech level, which creates is own opportunities and challenges, distinct from sci-fi. So yeah. Im probably not helping with the „less tense discussion“ part. But I do think the opinion that this is a childish theme has its merit. Thats not really a judgement on the quality of the theme – it looks great as a big bang action theme in place of Chima. Quote
Dannylonglegs Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 snip Well thought through response! Very on point! I agree with all of this. I don't think the idea of the theme is bad... but it suffers certainly from coolness-poisoning. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote

No, the reason why they mix various cool things is because it's awesome, And anyway, if you're a society that can afford miniature robots to do things for you, you can afford giving your entire kingdom a medieval aesthetic simply because you like medieval concepts.
