Here in Poland, and it was probaly the same in all the western market, Chima (and Bionicle reboot) was everywhere in the stores, it sells, but didn't create any "mania". Yet I would say the main obstacle to their success was other lego themes cannibalising their little brothers. In my son's school, Ninjago rules the world of the 4-6 years old. For the 7+ it's like 80% Star Wars...

The childishness of Chima cartoon compare to Ninjago may have play a role in that ? I hope NK will be more for 10 years old than for 6 years old...

My 7 year old son says Chima world/sets are boring. Not enough katana ?

(He liked them at first, but if the classmate prefer to play Ninjas at school, let's follow them).

I hope the heavy weaponery of NK will please them...

I would say the first bad guys set of Ninjago where very Chimaesque (crazy vehicles looking like their monstuous drivers : squeleton, serpent...). Then one could argue Chima was more medieval-fantastic, and Ninjago rebooted invest the Sci-Fi with an oriental twist. NK is a mix of the 2, medival Sci-Fi...

It's tricky to guess how much NK will sell. No idea if the App could helped a lot or not. But beside lego heavy marketing, I fear It would depend a lot of the buzz around the cartoon, maybe more than the quality of the sets. (yet the 2015 Ninjago sets full of fancy darkness being arguably cooler than the last chima set surely helped the sells...). For them to sell I still hope the next NK wawes will be full of badasses colorful creatures and weapons and stuff.

I can confirm that! The other main factor of Ninjago sells was that cartoon was available on TV4 - a very well known chanel. Chima ended on Nikelodeon and less people saw it.

And the coming wawe of Ninjago will probably be even better than the 2015 one's... Plus a movie ? Poor NK...

The Ninjago design team really reach some super saiyan level (the background designers, the quality of minifigs, the more mature target surely helped as well)

I hope the NK designer will learn from them...

Do we know when Ninjago will stop ? The theme is rather easy to renew and It will be like killing the hens with golden eggs for Lego...

Just this year Ninjago became an evergreen theme, and with its impending reboot (albeit a cinematic reboot, so set release could be sporadic at best) it's not going to be ending for some time now. We don't know if the TV show version will run alongside the TLM version, but it's safe to say that Ninjago or themes of heavy similarity will be around for some time to come.

These Nexo Knights do remind me a bit of the old Phantasy Star video game series (the original series if you will, I know very little of the newer PS titles). It had spaceships and medieval-sortof themes mixed too. When I first saw the Nexo Knights pictures, Phantasy Star instantly came to mind.

Sorry, do you mean a gift for a (certain amount of) purchase at legoshop ? Thank you

Yea, that kind of thing.

I just wanted to post my feelings ... I have gotten back into lego this month after 8 years of university in which I had no money to buy lego. Now I am a pharmacist with a good amount of disposable income and it absolutely breaks my heart that there are NO historical / castle sets for me to spend my money on. I bought all of the Hobbit sets I could find, even though I am not a fan of the movies, just because it was as close to medieval as I could get. I had heard that castle might make a comeback in 2016, so I was excited. Then I saw the Nexo Knights. These are horrendous. I want to buy sets that I can use to create my own medieval world... These sets are not fantasy or historical or medieval, they are sci-fi... I just have a burning desire to build my world, and no avenue to do so. This new line has crushed me and left me endlessly disappointed.

You probably know about it, but have you try Bricklink website ? a better (cheaper) way to get bricks than buying sets... Old castle minifigs are also there. And second hand lego (5 to 10 years old usually) are easy to find on websites selling second hand products. Good luck on your noble quest !!

Just use BrickLink, customize anything you want.

That's a slight to Phantasy Star! It's a great series with a very unique art style, and I don't think this really comes close.

Thank you ! Apparently a big armor on the guy...

They all have big armor.

So, anyone care to take a guess as to when we will see detailed set descriptions and when these will actually hit retail?

To me, the January 1st release date is almost a "nudge, nude, wink, wink" that we will see these in time for the Christmas/Holiday season. In fact, I am almost certain of it. In North America, even Lego stores break their own street dates. For example: this past summer the Ninjago sets that had a release date of August 1st were readily available at Lego retail stores 4-5 days prior to that and at TRU around 2 weeks prior. Also, given that January 1st is a holiday in many parts of the world, I don't think that this is the actual release date and that the Jan 1st date is not a hard date for TLG.

I believe that these will hit the shelves at TRU and other major regional chains (usually the ones to put stuff out earliest) by mid-December which might force Lego stores to put them out early as well. Following that train of thought, I think that set descriptions and full line pricing by region should follow by the end of November.

Sounds about right?

heu... Not the king, Queen, little girl, Robin, Jestro, Beast master, punk guy... Possible Princess or Merlok won't have either...

the shape look like a good guy armor no ? but probably not an exclusive Knight among the 5, Probably a generic blue soldier, but a "Dareth knight" would be lovely...

Well I was naturally assuming it would be a knight minifigure, and they all have big armor...

While its quite possible we will see stores putting them out early, its not correct to say that Jan 1st is "not the actual release date." Lots of sets are released on January 1st every year, this is not new. Given that this is a big bang theme I think they might actually try to stand tall on the release date more than most, but that could go either way.

Fair comment. I should have worded that better. What I meant to say is that to my knowledge, pretty much every theme that had a January 1st release date had been on shelves prior to Christmas. So, I figured that the Jan 1st release date was not a hard street date as opposed to TLG listing the release date as say January 19th.

Posted

It would be odd for TLG not to try and hit the christmas market, that said the series and app are due in december so they may use that to build hype and basically want people begging for the sets, a bit like the new thunderbirds series none of the toys were released till after the first half of the series aired people were all but screaming for them to come out.....myself included.

So could be marketing genius in disguise.

Posted

Being that this is a new theme it would be disastrous from a marketing point of view to release it at the one time of year that full priced items don't move.

If they don't hit the market a month before the Christmas run up then that would seem to be a very dubious decision.

Posted

I think it's a calculated marketing strategy to release most winter wawe after christmas. So the kids have 4 months to dream about the sets before to write to Santa. They doesn't know the Fortrex exist, they want the Bounty. And will dream of the Fortrex for their Birtday in May....
