BrickJagger Posted July 7, 2015 Author Posted July 7, 2015 Seeing something at Comic-Con is pretty doubtful because I think we would have seen it on the "Event times" thingy already. I'll admit that my recent posts have caused a wave of reactions because I didn't word them properly. This theme will be Fantasy, but kind of Steampunk-ish. Fantasy Steampunk? Is that a thing? I've now succeeded in confusing myself as well. And no helicopters, motorcycles, tanks or any of that. This will be a different kind of weird. This theme will last for at least a few years (3 being a few), but, as long as everyone here continues to breathe, we will all wind up with what we like eventually. I personally am a fan of TLG's ambitious plans this time around because it shows that they finally have interest in the Castle line. After the bore-fest that was 2013, I wanted anything but generic Castles and Damsels in Distress, and I stick to that to this day. We shall see what the reception is here, but at least one thing we can agree on is that we've had a fair (1000) amount of posts of speculation leading up to this. Quote
SirBlake Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Skipping the whole tanks & helicopters thing is a win in itself. I could surely find a place for steampunk stuff. That sort of element has found a home in fantasy stuff before in gnomes and goblins as far back as the original Warcraft games if I recall correctly. Could make for some neat siege engines and that sort of thing. Quote

So what are we talking here? Like orcs or goblins, but with a heavy focus on their siege engines? That look steam punkish? Will we have a core group of good guys all with specific names and traits (like Ninjago and Chima), or will it be more generic good humans vs bad orcs/goblins/trolls type of thing? Shib Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Something in the way of a Castle theme meets How To Train Your Dragon maybe? I could see magical beasts being used instead of the crazy Ninjago vehicles. Also ties into the Chima connection, which had both Legends Beasts and a fair few vehicles that were basically meant to be animals - Eris Eagle Interceptor was actually so nicely proportioned for an eagle that it won me over on the whole theme! Only weakness in that is that Steampunk comparison does imply some kind of mechanical vehicles. Guess it's a bit of a wait and see game now. Quote
General Magma Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Well hey, at least it's something new. We've had so many regular castle themes in the past decades, so this could be nice for a change. But we'll see... Quote
Shib Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 This is the thing, even if I don't like them enough to buy them, I do at least generally like the ideas behind a lot of the in house themes. As long as we still get mini figures that look the part for castle type builds then the parts in the sets can be repurposed as needed. Quote
thetang22 Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 The redeeming factor - Steampunk is about the only way "machines" fit into a high fantasy setting. Steampunk has been lightly mixed with medieval fantasy with success on several occasions, so there is definitely potential. Had the theme been Chima-fied, with lots of modern vehicles for the sake of modern vehicles, it would really taint the Castle theme. However, if you get a light presence of steam engine stuff, it could fit the fantasy context a lot better. Dwarves and Gnomes are pretty popular in fantasy/steampunk crossover material. If the steampunk rumor is true, I wonder if either of those races will show up. Quote
Regenerate builder Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 This just doesn't even sound like castle to me. Sounds more similar to a theme like monster fighters. Quote
thetang22 Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Think of some of the early Final Fantasy games (pre 7). There is a pretty light inclusion of steam punk-inspired stuff while maintaining a dominant medieval fantasy vibe. Quote
Blakstone Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 (edited) We still have many months to go for pictures, I am afraid. However, a TV show has to have main characters for the kids to follow. It stands to reason that they would be very distinctive. The green character could be an wood elf archer for example, the yellow could be heavily armored dwarf, the red could be a female wizard, and the blue could be a heroic knight. Something like that would make more sense to me than all the various brightly colored ninjas. I thought ninjas all wore black as camouflage. Unless Ninjago ninjas are trying to high in a neon skyline they are not camouflaged. Since there are very flew LEGO sets I keep intact, as long as the parts, prints, and accessories are useful for me, I will be happy. Perhaps there will be a character with viking styled helmet (no horns). Edited July 7, 2015 by Blakstone Quote
General Magma Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 I'm sure this new theme will bring in some useful & nice pieces. Quote
SirBlake Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 We still have many months to go for pictures If Chima is a good example of timing, this is how that went down: Legends of Chima released: January 2013 Storyline leaked: late September 2012 First photos: mid-October 2012 Quote

Even if I dislike the sets, the parts, moulds and prints could be worth it. Quote
Robert8 Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Steampunk?? That doesn't sound like a Castle theme to me.... Are you sure that rumor isn't about the rumored new Action theme for 2016? Becuase it sounds like it Quote

Becuase it sounds like it No, it's definitely a Castle sub theme. Being Chima's replacement, it's technically an Action Theme but can't go in the Action Themes forum because it's predominately a Castle theme. TheTang22's posts should explain this as well. Quote

So, it is going to be a Steampunk styled theme and you know what the name of the theme is but you can't share it yet.... God knows I'm scared to death for asking this but: Is it a licensed theme? Artanis I Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Sadly, I didn't do a lot with Chima, because despite some good useful things, the useless things made buying the sets not worth the cost. If not enough of this theme is good, it will not outweigh the bad to make it worthwhile for me. I thought ninjas all wore black as camouflage. From what I've heard, only in theatre. And the black was to show the audience who the bad guys were, more to show sinister character than for camouflage. Quote
fred67 Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Steampunk?? That doesn't sound like a Castle theme to me.... He did say "light inclusion of steam-punk inspired stuff," not that the theme was steam punk oriented. I could see that working; it actually sounds interesting if they don't push it too far. Quote
greenalfonzo Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Ugh, I'm getting Time Twisters flashbacks.... Quote
MAB Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 A thought: I think that we'll get a Classic Castle promo set next year. Last year there was a Classic Space one (And Benny's Spaceship), and this year there was a Classic Pirates one for this year to go along with the revival of the Pirates theme. Since Castle is coming back with new products next year, it would only make sense to make a promo set. That means that we will get a brand new CC, Crusader or BF fig next year. I don't think we will see a Classic Castle figure next year. We might well see a Classic Castle set, but take a look at the pirates one. There is nothing classic about it. If we get a Classic Castle promo it will likely contain a modern castle figure and modern bricks to make a small build with modern techniques. Quote
Schreeuwwitje Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 This would be great! Did I miss any news concerning this? Quote
SirBlake Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 All rumors at this point, but they seem to be pretty well informed rumors. Nothing official. Quote
