July 29, 20159 yr I have been thinking about that how to motorize the grabber and Idea with putting the motor there is not bad and simple... :) Crazy PPUNG... :D Max... Edited July 29, 20159 yr by MaxSupercars
August 3, 20159 yr In anticipation of my 42043, I have built my copy of the 42042 and I would like to share some of my findings: Things I like: - When the gearbox levers are in their neutral position, the turntable and the tracks can be moved by hand. In my opinion this increases the play-value considerably. - On the topic of play-value: the new gearbox layout (where one lever per function controls the direction of that function) is a huge improvement. There is no need any more to switch the battery back and forth and even better, the direction of each function is independent of each other. - Blue! Lots of blue! - Huge! Seriously, as others here have shown before, it is bigger than the 8043, which was once big for a flagship. My girlfriend didn’t believe me when I said this was this “smallest set I will buy this year”. I have some criticisms though: - I’m not convince about the looks. First, it’s unclear what scale it is meant to be: Some design clues point to a relatively small machine like a Liebherr LR1250, while other aspects like the integrated ladder and platform suggest it is meant to represent something much larger like a Liebherr LR13000. It doesn’t really mimic either of those, which is a let-down for me. Second: the cabine, roundness of the body and the design of the counterweigth are not life like enough to my taste. The 8288 feels much more realistic in both these aspects. - There are some lazy design solutions in this set, especially in the body. I feel that the structure could be have been made more elegantly with clever build techniques and efficient use of parts. This set simply doesn’t feel as well thought through than other contemporary sets. In short: I like this set for its size and colour, but I will heavily modify it to make a feel realistic and mimic a LR1350 or LR1400. Edited August 3, 20159 yr by Cumulonimbus
August 3, 20159 yr I dont think this set mimics any real crane but rather is designed to be a generic lego crane, even despite its large size.
August 3, 20159 yr The model is a fairly close representation of the Japanese IHI company CCH500, 50 ton, hydraulic crawler crane. Edited August 3, 20159 yr by Karle
August 3, 20159 yr I got my copy of 42042 today. I left home and will be away until the weekend, so I won't build it yet, but it's waiting for me at home the new gearbox layout (where one lever per function controls the direction of that function) is a huge improvement. There is no need any more to switch the battery back and forth and even better, the direction of each function is independent of each other. If they went with the solution of switching the battery box back and forth, it could have been made easier with a PF switch. The switch I have is much easier to switch back and forth than the BB. I'll try connecting the switch between the BB and the motor when I build my own copy, to make it easier than using the BB switch.
August 3, 20159 yr I think they could have made it RC like the 8043 excavator as there is plenty of space in the body IR recievers and an extra couple of motors for drive and motor based steering, while the other motor handles the motorised functions but I guess we can MOD it. August 3, 20159 yr The model is a fairly close representation of the Japanese IHI company CCH500, 50 ton, hydraulic crawler crane. The sticker on the side of the crane says "250 ton" so even if it not supposed to be a particular crane, it is supposed to be a fairly large crane. The HS 895 is about right.
August 3, 20159 yr I don't see any problem with people expecting more realism and stuff in Technic sets, but personally I don't care so much about it. It is a toy after all, I can take some less realistic details. I'm looking forward to build the crane when I get home.
August 3, 20159 yr I think they could have made it RC like the 8043 excavator true but you are missing a point....the 8043 was a flagship, this one it's not the a flagship....it's the "middle" set....
August 3, 20159 yr I think that Lego intended this set more to be for parts/modding than for features. If it was fully RC it would probably be as good as a flagship set, as TheItalianBrick pointed out. I'm really tempted by this model not so much because I like the model itself (although it is nice) but because there are a lot of nice parts in relatively high quantity - track links, clutch gears, 3L driving rings, and LOTS of blue!
August 3, 20159 yr I'm really tempted by this model because LOTS of blue! Believe me when you see all those blue parts in front of you your eyes sparkle as never before!!!!! Can't describe how nice it's this LEGO blue color! I simply love and happy that TLG it's using it a lot finally!!!!! Edited August 3, 20159 yr by TheItalianBrick
August 3, 20159 yr I was just looking for UK stock and there doesn't seem to be much. Pretty strange, considering how easy it was to buy before official release date!
August 3, 20159 yr I have not seen the model yet but your right if it is a 250 ton crane then it would b a CCH2500. It is the only crane that has the cab on the right side
August 4, 20159 yr I bought this set the other day. For a "middle" set it's surprisingly big! I quite like the gearbox set up, and I find having each lever controlling the different direction of each function quite fun to play with. Much less annoying than using the battery box to reverse direction. I originally bought this set as I need a lot of blue parts for a Moc but I ended up really enjoying the set, I might have to pick up a second one.
August 4, 20159 yr I've got the B-model instructions!! Although it is not published on Lego yet, a lovely lady from Lego customer services has provided me with that. Here are the links: http://cache.lego.com/r/service/-/media/franchises/technic/products/bi/b%20models/42042_b_digital_230615.pdf Have fun building!
August 4, 20159 yr It didn't take me long to make a decision and choose this over the Arocs. I'll maybe get the Arocs later - Christmas perhaps - but I like the crane a lot. A UK ebay seller had it in stock for £98 so I took the plunge... I know it's not cheap, but it's still a great set and an attractive price for 1,400 pieces (GBP 0.07 per piece).
August 4, 20159 yr Can anyone post a pictures of the crane near 8043 ? I am curious how big is it compared to the excavator. Thx.

I know this is not a licensed set..... but like I posted on the Arocs thread I like the movement TLG is going in posting some specs about licensed models. The Volvo loader and new Arocs both have specs printed on their inside flap covers. can't remember if the 8110 (unimog) did or not. But it would be great if TLG could do the same for sets that are based on real-life machines. B/c they are not licensed, they dont have to be overly specific. Even if they stated something like:Based on medium crawler crane (give examples), 50-150 ton(or give some range), different manufactures of the cranes, possible duty sites, etc..... An example that comes to mind is the 42025. Although (take a look at the 42025 thread http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=90001&hl= ) people have given theories about what plane this model is based on it would be fun to know the actual model or models TLG used as their inspiration for this model.

August 4, 20159 yr Hello everybody, I got yesterday my copy of the crawler crane and today I started building it. As I was not a fan of the propulsion arrangement I started to adapt it right away. I just finished the drivetrain. The tower and the boom will follow Edited August 4, 20159 yr by gvo25
August 4, 20159 yr That situation looks like it's about to probably produce a green coloured drag line excavator or something EDIT: Edited August 4, 20159 yr by D3K
August 5, 20159 yr Haha that's good! But that tiny bucket on 8043... I think that such an arrangement should be criminalized. MY EYES!!
August 5, 20159 yr That video was hilarious so that's how they got the 9391 crawler crane from 8043 and 42042.
August 5, 20159 yr Wow, 42042 is indeed very big. Maybe a little to big for my space . Thanks for the pictures !
