Haha that's good!

But that tiny bucket on 8043... I think that such an arrangement should be criminalized. MY EYES!!

I get ya, but IMO it looks better with that than with the 10x18 bucket the 8043 came with. The size is good, but it's far too wide.

If TLG should make a decent excavator again, I think they should make a new bucket that is more realistic, more like a proper excavator bucket.

In a couple of days we should get pics of my excavator bucket on 8043... which I'm very excited about. And I agree about TLG making a new bucket. Perhaps they'll release a MkII excavator in the same way that they released a MkII crane.

Back on topic, I found out that my crane should arrive tomorrow and I'm really looking forward to building it. 42030 was my first experience with "new" style Technic and I absolutely LOVED it. I'm so pleased that Lego have innovated in such a way that the toy is still unmistakably theirs but also totally unique and thoroughly enjoyable.

With all the gears and very different construction techniques, I think that I'll enjoy 42042 even more than I enjoyed the Volvo.

I did Jurgens ultimate 8043 mod and that's the bucket it uses. It looks small, but digs more efficiently.

do you guys think there's enough space in the bottom to put two medium motors and an IR receiver to drive the tracks?

Edit: looks like someone is working on a drivetrain configuration. for the most part I want to leave the whole set stock except for the bottom part which I want two M-Motors and an IR receiver.

Hi All,

It's been years since my last Technic set, more than 20 I think, but last weekend I got 3 sets.. all 42042! :-) (Warehouse had 35% off on a birthday deal!)

I build the first one as pr. instructions.. had to see it, and then I build this bridge for my trains from the other boxes:

I need to add some connections, but it's tested and works!

It's almost 6am. I should've been sleeping now for hours. Yet here I am, wondering - build or not build the crane :laugh:

I've just finished building all bags numbered 1 and 2 and what can I say... this model is amazing. That gearbox is just crazy, and all these parts. My MOC life will be enriched!

A few people seem to be attaching the grab at the bottom of the triangle, even though the instructions and pictures show the grab attached at the middle of the triangle. Has it already been mentioned, and is it a mistake by Lego? It makes far more sense to have it attached at the bottom, where it can pivot freely (and would probably have made even more sense to use pins without friction to facilitate this).

I started building last night, couldn't resist  I started with the 4 bags a while ago now.

I'm finished now and I love the model. It's an absolutely fantastic looking model and it functions really well. If I had one criticism, it would be that the superstructure turns very easily by hand and there's no need to make it a PF feature. I can see why some have suggested this as a fully remote controlled model, but IMO for it to be flagship material it would need to be larger and have more functions (eg individually driven tracks, stackable counterweights etc.). Lots of room for modding tho!

I finished the model about 15 min ago. I mirrored the build regarding the cabin and the stairs on the opposite side, to have the cabin on the left side. That's what I'm used to see and it looks better to me that way.

I modified the electric route by adding a PF switch between the battery box and the L-motor, getting a switch that is easier to turn than the battery box switch. I've also left out adding the additional part of the crane arm, it's long enough as it is.

Otherwise the crane is built according to the instructions.

It's a very nice model, I think it looks really realistic although I haven't seen any such cranes in real life. I would probably give it 8/10.

The sticker on the side of the crane says "250 ton" so even if it not supposed to be a particular crane, it is supposed to be a fairly large crane. The HS 895 is about right.

Actually, I don't think it's the above crane. Looking at the luffing gear of the boom, 42042 does not have a gantry. (The gantry is a piece on most lattice boom cranes that goes between the pendants connected to the end of the boom, and the luffing gear of the crane. Having the gantry means the luffing gear can be connected to the boom easier, as the gantry can be moved by hydraulics to a position where the pendants can be connected with the boom on the ground. In the above picture, you can see the gantry just above the body, with all the lines leading to it.) The above crane has a gantry, and most cranes have one. The only company I can think of that makes a crane of comparable size to 42042 (250 ton capacity) is Kobelco, the CK2000, which is only a 200 ton capacity crane, and has no gantry. It appears that any crane over 200 ton capacity has a gantry, although I may be mistaken.

In my opinion, in spite of the PF and gearboxes, 42042 is actually less advanced than 8288, having no gantry, derrick, or luffing jib. I have also never seen a crawler crane with a grabber like that. I'm passing on it for now, although I might get one come Christmas, for the blue parts.

A quick question - I have two White Plate 1x3 among the leftover parts, where are those supposed to be? I can't remember seeing them in the instructions.

Ah, I missed that when I was building.

Well, to fix or not to fix...

If you do a search of the IHI CCH2500 I think you might find a close match for the crane.

It's quite a big crane, that one. I can see that they possibly designed this set based on it.
