Scouty Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Well, I think I would stay, if you ever wanted to go back into pirates (lest the release the theme again) it'll be even more difficult to get the sets back. But this what I think X-D . I hope you make the right choice :-) . Quote
Shadows Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Welcome to central Florida! Good to have another AFOL here! *y* As for what to do ... go with what feels right. There's no rule that says you have to pick up entire themes, as nice as that may be. If you're in a space/money situation, just grab the sets with the most unique parts that you really like or that you know you'll most regret missing. Merging the themes could be interesting. Pirates are really an extension of castle in many ways, with the potential to build huge castle-like forts similar to the kind the Spanish used in the Caribbean. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted October 15, 2007 Author Governor Posted October 15, 2007 sorry for not posting for a while, I just moved last month, so I am without either of my LEGO collections, and until recently without Internet... Welcome back Mr SkaForHire! Pirates are really an extension of castle in many ways... Just like Adventurers is an extension of Western... *wacko* Quote
Scouty Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Just like Adventurers is an extension of Western... *wacko* And like Indiana Jones an extension of Adventurers. So Indiana Jones => Western *wacko* Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted October 15, 2007 Author Governor Posted October 15, 2007 So This is my dilemma - give up pirate collecting for a while and spend what little money I have on Castle or try and go a new direction with my pirate collection... more MOCs and less buying pirate parts - but still trying to fit them into piratey themed elements..... What a silly thing to post in a Pirate LEGO Forum X-D Obviously the answer is forget Castle and use the money to buy more Pirates. Quote
Lamanda2 Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 "What a silly thing to post in a Pirate LEGO Forum ... ...Obviously the answer is forget Castle and use the money to buy more Pirates." Just because this is the Pirate Forum that doesn't mean there aren't Castlers hanging about. ;-) I would recommend the Castle (What are the odds, a Castle fan suggesting Castle?), especially with all the great sets that are currently out, the awesome new sets for next year, and the great chances of there being more to come in the next couple years. Another good thing about choosing a line that's currently in production is the chance of catching some great sales in the stores and at S@H. Of course, I personally think LEGO should just come out with a new pirate line so fans don't have to have such dilemmas. X-D ~Amanda Quote

Shadows Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Welcome back Mr SkaForHire! Just like Adventurers is an extension of Western... *wacko* You're missing the bigger overview, the architecture and technology. Look at those pictures and tell me that someone who is well versed in castle construction couldn't extend their way into Pirates in that manner and merge some of the efforts. There is a reason that the Spanish conquistadors considered themselves Knights. Oh, and you missed a step. Western is an extension of Pirates in my world. It's why I want a Zorro theme to bridge the gap. Adventurers, however, are only related to Indy now. Indy might be related to Aquaraiders, if we get unlucky, so don't go overboard (get it? overboard X-D ) Nevermind. 8-| Quote

SkaForHire Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Welcome to central Florida! Good to have another AFOL here! *y* Thanks, although unless I can find a full time job in my field (historian,) I will probably be moving on in a year for a PhD. Although it is a good vacation from school :) A lot to do, but too darned hot to do it LOL. (I come from Pennsylvania, where they usually have already had snow this time of year!) Is there any AFOL groups in the area? I have ran into a few AFOLs over the last couple years visiting the Lego Store down here on job hunts and vacations - so I know they are out there! as for my dilemma... I just am trying to prevent myself from buying way too much lego. I have most of the pirate sets that were released, and way too many ships. It may just be easier not seeing my collection for a couple years and just rebuilding a castle collection while I am at this apartment. As a lot of you point out, it can easily be converted to pirates - especially with the new ships. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted October 15, 2007 Author Governor Posted October 15, 2007 "But the new hulls don't really suit pirates though... They're too curved and pointy..." said some negative bastard X-D Quote

As time passes, people seem to be losing touch with history. Outside of education, I'm not sure it's a field with much potential. I came very close to studying Spanish Colonial history myself, and couldn't find anything to do with it. I even looked into some kind of shipwreck based field work and it's all either blistering days in the sun for no money or pillaging whatever you can find to end up splitting it with the state. None of it ever seemed to have any real historical purpose. Sad, really. Hot? I never go out in daylight, so I hadn't really noticed X-D Another reason I didn't end up in nautical archaeology. Wish I could manage a discount out there ... All I get is penalized with sales tax whenever I have to place an order from S@H. AFOLs exist in decent numbers, I run into them in stores, looking nervous and acting like they're buying gifts for kids 8-| , but I certainly haven't seen anything organized out there. I think there might be a small branch of a regular train club here that does something with LEGO, but I haven't the space for trains so I haven't researched it. Quote

As a lot of you point out, it can easily be converted to pirates - especially with the new ships. well in that case, the answer is easy. if you want to limit your lego collection but keep on collecting, then sell your overstock and use the money to buy the pirate sets you don't have just yet. if you're not really interested in getting ALL pirate sets, then sell your overstock and buy some castle or whatever it is that you want to buy. just some friendly advice from a fellow historian :-D Quote

Tell me about it, lol... you either have to teach or work for the government... They whine and complain in the news and on TV all the time about the shortage of high school teachers in Florida... but apparently there is an overabundance of social science teachers... I'm still applying to jobs for that. I originally found a job teaching history at a technical university - but of course they only teach so much history... and no open classes next semester. The same goes for nautical archeology... except if you go and get a degree in that (at say East Carolina or Texas A&M) there probably is more jobs out there for it. Nautical archeology is becoming bigger as it becomes harder to get permits to dig on land - plus the public is interested in underwater stuff more sometimes - especially with the popularity of pirates. I am a naval and maritime historian, however I doubt I will ever find a job doing just that... as much as kids may like to take a college class on pirates, you have to be able to teach survey courses like American history or world history (which I do already and don't mind) anyway back to lego - If they would just re-release pirates I would not have this problem LOL! Governor Mister Phes Posted October 15, 2007 Author Governor Posted October 15, 2007 So Mr SkaForHire, if there were new Pirate sets unexpectedly released (let us dream!) within the next few months how would that effect your expenditure on Castle? Quote
SkaForHire Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 So Mr SkaForHire, if there were new Pirate sets unexpectedly released (let us dream!) within the next few months how would that effect your expenditure on Castle? it would probably kill it lol.... especially if it was of the same quality as the old pirates. or even that of vikings or new castle... Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted October 16, 2007 Author Governor Posted October 16, 2007 Well you're very safe from seeing the quality of the old pirates set ever again X-D. But if you're willing to settle for the qaulity of Vikings and the new Castle then you may consider piratical means to accumulate extra funds. Maybe you can still build Pirate MOCs in MLCAD - there's no law you have to physically build everything you design in ML CAD, or is there? Quote

Landlubber Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 If you have that many ships and sets then you no doubt have a pretty good supply of pirate and imperial figures by now. I'd be concentrating on doing some kickass MOC's using other cheaper elements that are slightly piratical. That's what I've been doing lately, just building fort's and hideouts using all my other spare bits. Stock up on bricks and arches and tiles from PAB and do some large sized MOC's which you can populate using your already large collection of figures. Quote
Lamanda2 Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 "I just realized that all the forums are gone except this one??? did they just all get merged into one? what happened?" I believe they were all merged in one by removing all of the sub-forums. I like it alot this way, makes it much easier for me to navigate on dial-up. *y* ~Amanda Quote

I have enough ships... just not enough figs to man them all! :) I do have a lot though... I just really like the imperials and always want more :) Although our custom torso people here do an excellent job, and if i could find a decent printer and cheep enough figs to modify I might make myself some imperial guardsmen and as for PaB wall... they have this new bucket for $100 that is about the size of the freetyle tubs... I am just waiting for a time that I go in there and it is mostly grays, whites, blacks, and arches.... because if you build the stacks I am sure I can get at least 2000 pieces in there... (in the large round cups that they have always had at the ORlando store, I can get around 300 pieces in them not counting small filler pieces) so when they finally have the "right" assortment for a large fortress I am going to spend a couple hours there filling that bucket :) Edited October 17, 2007 by SkaForHire Quote
