BritishBrickFan Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 Also, is no one going to talk about this?? This seems like a pretty big deal??? just look at 1:20 on the reveal video, it's clear it's a rendering error because the Clara legs are similar to the Spiderman legs with two separate colours Quote
Tariq j Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 Having seen them up close, I like the minifigures even more, lets hope this becomes an official theme. Quote
mediumsnowman Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 I'm not a Dr. Who fan and I've never watched the show, but this set looks really good. Quote
Captain Nemo Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 I'm very happy with the finished product--and it's a for sure buy on day one. Hopefully I'll be able to find some at my local Toys R Us around December. I think the build is utterly spectacular, and I even get the hint of modular. It would be really cool to see more Tardis interiors being built, all with the same general size/layout to connect to the door. I think the figures are rather good. I'm not disappointed (as some are) in the 12th's appearance--I was planning on getting the Dimensions level anyways, so it's just a nice variant (but yes, Dimensions Dr. Who does look better). Clara looks perfect, as does the 11th. I'm torn on the Weeping Angel--I think the torso dress is good, but I'm not a fan of her evil face; to me it reads more sinister than monster (I think it's the eyebrows). And I just hate the wings. Lego seriously needs to invest in a new solid wing set piece. I has so many uses. And I'm not a fan of the Daleks. I don't like their design as much as the Dimensions on. I think they're a bit too tall, but most of all I really dislike how the solid black band was not (somehow) carried full circle around. I think the gap looks really weird. Seriously good set though (very satisfying for fans). I hope this turns into a full fledged theme, even if the release is irregular like Simpsons or Ghostbusters. Quote
BritishBrickFan Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 mediumsnowman - no matter what you do/don't like, Doctor Who is the only "character" that can integrate with every single Lego theme, and it not look out of place kids are going to absolutely love it, especially if they're massive Doctor Who fans because that's the beauty of the show - the Tardis on a pirate ship? interesting new story! Tardis in the city?? again, interesting new story! (is that crane actually powered by an alien??) to get the most out of it, you've got to watch the series (it's available on Netflix now I believe, so try it and just go with it!! it's one of the longest running sci-fi shows in the world, so please try it out and if you honestly don't like it, you'll still love the set, but you'll "enjoy" the set more if you do watch the show! Quote
8BrickMario Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 I think my biggest problem with the Angel is its face, too. The black lines look out of place with the grey, and the face looks more elderly than monstrous. Perhaps if they kept the colors grey and dark grey, it'd look better, but I understand the want to make it more lifelike to hint that it's not really a statue. It's still a good figure, but I hope they'll be able to improve it in the future. I can't wait to sneak it into seemingly innocuous scenes in the city! I was looking again at the TARDIS, and there seem to be some interesting building techniques. I like the "stairs", and the connection blends in really well. It's a real shame that the front doesn't open, though. How is Clara supposed to join the Doctor? Quote

Tardis in the city?? again, interesting new story! (is that crane actually powered by an alien??) That's a really good point that I'd not considered. Get a few basic sets out the door (covering major villains) and you don't really need anything else for Doctor Who, because the rest of the Lego universe caters for it. Quote
Tariq j Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 I wonder whether there's anything hidden underneath the console. Doesn't look like it but you never know. Quote
LEGODalekbuster523 Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 Wut? I haven't stared at either too extensively, but my initial reaction to the ones in the set was "Yes, they're not too blocky like the Dimensions pack!" I think the Ideas one looks more fanmade, plus the black skirt at the bottom doesn't go all around and the golden piece in the middle of the black pieces at the bottom looks ridiculous. The Dimensions design is perfect IMO. Quote

Just my thoughts though. Quote
8BrickMario Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 To better understand this show, I've just started watching...from the very beginning. Help me. Quote
Dannylonglegs Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 To better understand this show, I've just started watching...from the very beginning. Help me. The beginning of the reboot? Or the actual begining? Doctor Who is ancient... I haven't even watch all of the old episodes myself. I picked an chose. you won't get to Matt Smith or Peter Capaldi for a very... very long time. Tennant is the best though. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote
8BrickMario Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 Oh, I know. I'll probably skip to Tennant after Hartnell, but I just had to see how it all started. Quote
The Chosen Minifigure Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 Oh, I know. I'll probably skip to Tennant after Hartnell, but I just had to see how it all started. No! You must not skip Eccleston! Only one season, but not a dud among them. Quote
8BrickMario Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 Should have thought before opening that can of worms...I'll probably jump around. As you can probably tell, Blink was my gateway episode. I just want to have more context. One thing I can say so far is that the exterior of the TARDIS looks great. Every detail is spot-on. Perhaps it's best the doors don't open, as the Doctor doesn't want any uninvited guests. I'll be having lots of fun whooshing it around like a maniac. Quote

Seriously though, to fully enjoy Doctor Who, it's not just the Modern stuff you should watch. See if you can pick up a digital, or physical, copy of Doctor Who Magazine #474. It contains the results of the latest series-wide poll, and is a handy must-watch guide. At minimum, from the classic series you should watch An Unearthly Child, Genesis of the Daleks, and The Caves of Androzani. EDIT-Oh, and don't jump around the Matt Smith years. Big, 4-year story arc. EDIT-Put in spoiler tags for being off-topic. Edited October 6, 2015 by The Chosen Minifigure Quote
LMB10 Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 Generally the 2005 relaunch gives enough context to understand and appreciate the show It's not 100% necessary to watch the Classic Series, but if you enjoy NuWho then give it a watch sure Quote

eric729 Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 It looks like the actual Tardis might not be complete all the way around. We have only ever seen three sides to it and the fourth might only attach to the console. Quote
8BrickMario Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 The submission model proves that the police box folds up completely, all four sides. Quote
Toa of Gallifrey Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 I recommend some staple classic series episodes (An Unearthly Child, The Daleks, The Tenth Planet (unless you don't wanna watch a missing episode), The War Games, Spearhead in Space, Terror of the Autons, Robot, Genesis of the Daleks, The Brain of Morbius, The Deadly Assassin, The Caves of Androzani, Remembrance of the Daleks, Survival, The Enemy Within (aka, the 1996 TV Movie)) with the bolded ones as the most important ones, and from there the modern series (from the episode Rose onwards). As for the set, I really love it. The console is very well-built and the inclusion of 11 and 12 makes me absolutely giddy. Quote

I agree with the list of OldWho. And yes, Everything Ecclesston did was amazing! Particularly the lost children episodes. And Captain Jack. now there's a Lego figure I want! ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote

Clone OPatra Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 I know it's all very exciting, but this isn't the place to discuss the show. Go to Culture & Multimedia if you want to do that. Quote
