Don't forget Lego is still aiming for children. So if they left out a wall because they think it is better for playability, it makes sense to me. And if a kid doesn't like it, he can always build a wall himself (that would cost maybe 30 cent...

McDonalds' food is aimed at children as well, but that doesn't make it better than a good steak aimed at an adult. When us adults rate a LEGO set, it's only natural that we rate it with adult eyes.

I personally think that this is a good set. The only reason I didn't rank it higher was the fact that it is called "soldiers fort" and only includes only one actual soldier. It works so much better with "soldiers outpost" or whatever it is called (sorry just forgot the actual name).

Great review! As more of a soldier than pirate fan, this should be the highlight of the range for me - the officer and his daughter are certainly selling points, but I feel it should have had an extra uniformed soldier and more standing space - how would one even open the prison door without getting thrown into the sea?

I like a lot of the details on the structure, but the lack of a back wall to the prison is criminal!

I am plannin on buying the whole series except for the ship. Really wanna get into the pirates theme. Personally, however, I think all of these sets could have been done better. Too few parts in each set IMHO.

Just picked this set up tonight.....first pirate's set I've purchased in 20 years pirate_oh.gif (the last sets I bought were Islanders back in 1995!)

I wasn't going to even buy it, but I went to a Toy/Comic/Card trade show local to me and got it for $20. For $10 off I couldn't pass it up. Will probably go back again and grab the other 3 sets with that discounted price.

My impression so far, after building it, is its not a bad set. But its not "great" either. Some cool playability features I like, and some that could be done better. I do like the new brick colors however and how much more realistic they are (the classic yellow/white scheme still has a special place in my heart though).

I do love the new minifigs though. As good and classic as the old pirates were, its nice to see a variety of facial expressions and full printed torsos.

Overall, a decent set. I will probably like it more when I get the Soldier's Outpost and combine them.

I give this set an "average" vote. As an adult I realize I'm well beyond the target audience but even so it just can't match something like the old Eldorado Fortress. Overall it's more like the old Imperial Outpost - too small to be a fort (even if we apply the illusion scale from shipbuilding) and it looks absolutely nothing like a fort (unlike EF, which at least looked the part on a small scale). Yes, it has some useful components and the minifigs are nice, but the name simply doesn't match the actual design. Then there's the modular aspect: everyone keeps mentioning the outpost (which is appropriately named) and the fact that they were designed to be connected into something bigger. Ok, I get that, but I'd like to ask one simple question: what happened to building sets that work well as standalone builds? The outpost works reasonably well by itself, and the fort perhaps a little less so, but when I connected them together it was still quite obvious they were two separate sets, and they don't form anything spectacular when combined. We all know that TLG wants several different price points within a theme, but I can't help but think they could've made this into something a little more impressive without blowing up the price. Big raised baseplates may be gone in favor of modular designs, and there's nothing wrong with the concept, but good designs are far more important and this is average at best. I can see lots of young boys having a blast playing with it but I wouldn't put any of mine on display. I bought several for their parts, built one and immediately tore it down. I'm sure it will sell reasonably well, but I'm equally sure that a slightly bigger, slightly more correct fort would sell well, too. Again, I vote average - but at least we have the theme back again! Fetch aft the rum, Darby!

Granted the last pirates set I put together was sabre island, and I was eagerly awaiting this line, but I loved this set. Just a great combination of awesome figs, parts, and detail for its size. I was probably a little more impressed with 'soldiers outpost', which set the scene so well for such a small set, but the fort does not disappoint.

Pretty disappointed with the lack of treasure chests in this line though...just feel they are lacking....

Nice review.

I love the minifigures, but dont like the actual set. Because i grew up in the 80s im partial to the old forts of the 90s. This set just seems soo small to be a fort and soo many open areas.

100% agree plus the 2015 theme is more childish and cartoonish compared to serious look and building experience from the 80s and 90s

Agree. This set can hardly be called a Fort. And it's design is way too simple. I was about to buy it but I'm glad I didn't

I see this set is just some cool minifigures + a bunch of pieces

While i like this set, I can only think of what they could've done a whole lot better. First of all i would've liked it to be a whole lot bigger mabey 80 to 100$? Also ever since i heard pirates was coming out again this year for another iliteration I hoped for a remade fort elderado (6276) since the blue coats were comeing back. Also since the minifigures in this series are based on the classic sets i.e. RedBeard or Captain Roger depending where you come from.

I was pretty disappointed with this years soldiers fort. I missed the 2009 fort, and was hoping this years was going to be AT LEAST a rehash of that one. So my fix is I've bought 3 of this years, but I haven't combined them to make a bigger one yet...

Yeah I would have to agree with that! Because Lego is technically a toy but it is nice because it doesn't have to be but the sets are intended to be for kids

This set is a perfect example of what happens when you try to design a bigger set without baseplate. While Treasure Island and Shipwreck Defense somewhat worked without a baseplate, this clearly doesn't. Also, it's kinda cramped, it's a good partspack, and a good variety of minifigs, but that's it. The build is very strange. It looks like it would never survive any heavy storm, but rather collapse into the sea. It's very "airy".

To me, Treasure Island and Shipwreck Defense are the smartest and most valuable sets so far. Imperial Outpost is good, but is hampered by the fact that there's only one complete bluecoats, the other one being an Officer.

The flag that came with my set has the pattern printed upside down on the back. pirate_hmpf.gif Did anyone else have this issue?

No, I have not. You be able to return it to the store you got it from for an exchange.
