I recently purchased the new X1 Prototype 75082 set. As I am before anything else an OT fan, I actually purchased this set to modify it into a TIE X1 Advanced. I have always been a big fan of this fighter and was not satisfied with the Lego version. The X1 Prototype central part is I think much closer to how the X1 Advanced central part should look like.

I then used this part, added the rear central part mainly inspired by the 8017 set and then worked on the side panels. I especially worked on the connection between the central part and the side panels.

I am not yet hundred percent satisfied and still need to improve:

  • The side panels (should II call them Wings?) texture
  • Side panels grey tube to be replaced in order to be more accurate
  • The cockpit. I plan to rework the seat and the computer panels
  • Improve the greeb on the inside of the wings

Few pics!

This looks great! I've been working on modding my 75082 and I realized just how much I love the new windscreen pieces. I would suggest replacing all of the DBG parts on the cockpit with LBG versions. I've done so and it looks very nice.

Nice job :) I've been waiting for somebody to make use of the new pieces. It looks really good , this is something Lego should've done.

Wow... Just wow! Thats what I call a great System scaled Tie Advanced!

Looking very good!

It looks great but I would suggest:

  • Replacing the dark grey bricks.
  • Make the "wings" lighter and thinner.
  • Use friction bricks instead of thoese clip hinges.

However, it's still a very good MOC.

Lovely!! I just collected my 2x 75082 and you have just about made me want to open mine up! :)

I personally like how you used the DBG pieces to complement the grey colour of the cockpit, but maybe lesser DBG on the top and bottom? Also, what about changing the 1x2 grills on the wings to DBG as well?

Beautiful! :)

Thanks a lot guys ! This is my first MOD/MOC since I came out of my dark age, so I happy that you find it not too bad!

And thanks for the suggestions.

Regarding the DBG bricks, I agree that there are too much of them. Looks like I will soon bricklink some LBG bricks!

It’s true that the wings are not thin enough, I will have to change this too.

Nom Carver, not sure I understand what you mean when you suggest to use “friction bricks instead of those clip hinges”. They look very similar I think, plus the clip hinge help to make the wings sturdy and not moving :classic: .

I mean this: 44301.gif and this: 44302.gif to replace this: 63868.gif and this: 60478.jpg, that way the small panels will not move, can also try another technique for the panels like what I did with my TIE avenger/interceptor:

Notice how the grey on the borders of the panel is made with a grey plate between two black plates.

Thanks Nom Carver, these friction bricks are actually what I used. I made a mix between words "clip hinges" and "friction bricks" (my poor english!). With clip hinges, the small side panes would move a lot. I used 4 friction bricks for each small panel to make the wings sturdy enough.

Your TIE Interceptor looks really good, thanks for the tip. I will check if I can use this technic.

Great work. I'm really considering doing my own version of this. I like the design of the prototype's cockpit much better than the last version of Vader's TIE Advanced.

I will probably make the wings/solar panels slightly larger, though, and I'll try to do them in a way similar to the 9492 TIE Fighter. I've got a TIE collection that I'm working on that all is in a similar style, so it'd have to match that. If you're interesting in seeing them, the imgur album is here: http://imgur.com/a/s2kU0

It looks like we had some of the same ideas for approaching the interior side of the wings/solar panels.

Thanks. Great collection of TIEs! Doing the side panels the same way they are on the 9492 AND solid enough is a challenge. This why i finally kept the one i used on this mod/moc. Plesase share your solution when you have one, I will be really interested :classic:.

It's actually not too hard. I've buit lots of TIE's (mostly digital) using a slightly modified version of 9492's wing panels. I've also built Corwaille's fantastic Tie interceptor, which uses the same technique. There should be a link to one of my Tie's in my signature, where you can get an LFX with the solution. (Totally not a self promotion...) Hope I helped you out!

Yeah, I wouldn't say it's difficult. There are a few SNOT pieces that allow you to connect the gray borders of the solar panels/wings so that they're flush with the black part. The 9492 directions show how, and I think they're available online somewhere.

To the extent that you're concerned with stability, my 9492-style bomber and interceptor are a bit flimsier than Lego might make, since the angled parts of the gray borders of the solar panels are connected only on one side. It's not too bad, though.

Thanks for the inputs GuydudeMan27 and Raskolnikov. I will look at this and see if I can improve the wings :-).

  • 2 months later...

Reading your first post is like listening to myself speak - great minds think alike!! Wow, I'm amazed at just how similar our builds are at first glance, I'm suprised I have hust only found your build now?!

Looks great!

Pretty funny indeed! Thanks for posting.

Your TIE looks very good. It looks overall bigger. Looking at the other pictures in your post I see that it is definitely bigger than the original lego version. My TIE is similar in size to the original Vader's TIE. The scale you chosen is probably more accurate and makes we want to update mine. This and the cockpit which looks very good in your version :-).

Another awesome TIE Advance! Just seeing It now for the first time. I like how you managed to keep It to 8017's size.

Yes, it is a fair sized bigger than 8017 TIE Advanced. I estimate my build to be between 800-1000 pieces with stand.

Like Orange Leader mentioned, your version also looks very good in keeping with 8017's size, but with a larger cockpit ball - In that size you've done a great job!
