grum64 Posted March 13, 2015 Author Posted March 13, 2015 (edited) Build Day 10 - 13/03/2015 - Build Time Today 5hrs - Total Build Time 46hrs After a few busy days today's been a building day. Nothing much to say really other than thankfully it's been a error free day. A few tricky bits that took longer than I'd have liked but I still seem to be making good progress and am enjoying the build very much. I've decided to incorporate Christophe Moittie's extended boom and have started Bricklinkling the few parts I'll need. Here's today's pics. Edited March 13, 2015 by grum64 Quote
Jeroen Ottens Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 This is such a great thread to follow. Your perseverance is an example for me. This thread is like looking at a masterpiece painting. You already know what the total picture is, but every day another small detail is brought to your attention. It makes you admire the model even more so. So thanks for sharing this. Quote

grum64 Posted March 17, 2015 Author Posted March 17, 2015 Build Day 11 - 17/03/2015 - Build Time Today 4hrs - Total Build Time 50hrs Would have been a good few hours building today but I forget about the 'errors' in the instructions (post 9 of this topic). After realising what I'd done I set about banging my head on the table. No, really I did! Strangely this didn't help. As it was nearly dinner time I decided to call an end to building and redo it correctIy tomorrow. There's not much to see but here's today's pictures: Quote
grum64 Posted March 19, 2015 Author Posted March 19, 2015 (edited) Build Day 12 - 19/03/2015 - Build Time Today 6hrs - Total Build Time - 56hrs Todays building was delayed for a short time while I corrected an error I'd made during the previous build day. The eagle eyed among you may already have noticed that the 2 x 4 L Shape Liftarms just in front of the seats should be 3 x 5 L's. Me being less than eagle eyed on this occasion didn't notice this until Stage 86 when I came to fit the 11L Liftarm but found nothing to fit it to. Off came the roof beacons followed by the cab, the offending parts removed and correct ones fitted. The rest of the days building went really well. Here's today's pictures. D3K Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 It's so cool to see this shaping up! And maybe most impressive; I don't see any bitemarks! Quote
grum64 Posted March 19, 2015 Author Posted March 19, 2015 It's so cool to see this shaping up! And maybe most impressive; I don't see any bitemarks! Thank you. I'm very pleased with progress so far. As for the bite marks. Oh they're there believe me During all my builds a few pieces get so badly teeth marked I have to either use them inside the build where they won't be seen or replace them (several times in couple of cases!) BusterHaus Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 Fantastic progress! How do you handle the stickers? They're on straighter than most of mine. Quote

Thank you Bart I bought the 42009 used and the stickers were already applied so the credit for them being straight must go to its previous owner. When I do have stickers to apply Gilly does them for me. If it was down to me they'd end up stuck to the table or worse, my forehead Edited March 21, 2015 by grum64 Quote

grum64 Posted March 24, 2015 Author Posted March 24, 2015 (edited) Build Day 13 - 23/03/2015 - Build Time Today 6hrs - Total Build Time - 62hrs Today started well. Well that is until I got to part 3 on page 193. Yep, the very first page of the superstructure build. So about 20 minutes into the days building which even for me is something of a record Trying to push the axle through the holes on the turntable, required parts and previously assembled parts would have been fine had it not been for the bush that try as I might I could not get to stay in place. After 35 minutes or so I took the pieces off the turntable and used a 2L axle pushed through the Liftarm and Bush as in photo below. Then it was just a case of carefully putting all the parts back on the turntable and pushing an axle through to drive out the 2L. Fitting the actuators while trying to keep the bevel gear in place was another source of much frustration but 1hr & 55 minutes and a good measure of perseverance got them done. Note to self: Move black pin connector from black pin & onto blue pin on unfinished assembly. Edited March 24, 2015 by grum64 Quote

JGW3000 Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Nifty solution. I've done similar; looking forward to seeing those LA's lift something! Quote
grum64 Posted March 24, 2015 Author Posted March 24, 2015 Nifty solution. I've done similar; looking forward to seeing those LA's lift something! I almost always use it in situations like this. 20 minutes or so trying unsuccessfully to assemble the parts make this one of the aforementioned almosts rather than always Quote
Kiwi_Builder Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 (edited) Going good Grum Those 5x11 panels by the engine are on the wrong sides so the stickers are backwards, the OCD is killing me! Edited March 24, 2015 by Kiwi_Builder Quote

Technically Savvy Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Hi Mr. Grum64 Your perseverance and dedication both amazes and inspires me! I would like to see this thing in full glory as I own this 42009 and this is what brought me back to Lego after my dark ages Are the linear actuator's gears correct on both sides? I am not an expert but won't they be on the opposite sides? Sorry I am only pointing out my concern as your undaunted effort shouldn't go waste for a gear on a LA Quote
