Siegfried Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 The challenge between Hinckley and I may be over (for now), but I want more! Based on my recent (incompetently designed) poll I think it would be possible for a competition to be designed that at least five (but hopefully more) people could enter. If you are interested (or if you have some ideas) please post a few of the sets that you have free (or believe you could make up from spare parts) and that you think would be suitable. (Don't mention sets that you have but would not be prepared to break.) If we have enough interest in enough of the same sets we can start a poll (or a blind draw if people prefer) and try to pick 2-5 sets. I was thinking of trying to have in total about 1000-1500 pieces. I would also be prepared to allow a set number of additional parts. If there is interest but it turns out that we don't have at least five people who can (and will) put together about 1000-1500 pieces from various sets I could try to make a list of pieces instead, possibly even with no fixed colours. EDIT: I will be editing this to reflect what people have. Please note that I don't consider anything in this list as a promise, at this stage I am just trying to find five people with at least 500 pieces in common... 3825 Krusty Krab - Hinckley, imperialshadows 4417 Aero Pod X-Pod - optimus-convoy 4478 Geonosian Fighter - Hinckley 4502 X-Wing Fighter - Hinckley 4884 Wild Hunters - Sinner, Hinckley, imperialshadows 4917 Mini Robots - Shine 4939 Cool Cars - optimus-convoy, Sinner 4954 Model Townhouse - Sinner, Hinckley 5524 Airport - imperialshadows 6205 V-Wing Fighter - Shine, Hinckley 7016 Viking Boat against the Wyvern Dragon - john cleese, Sir Dillon, Hinckley 7018 Viking Ship - Hinckley, Sir Dillon, imperialshadows 7020 Army of Vikings - Hinckley, Sir Dillon, imperialshadows 7021 Vikings vs Ofnir - Hinckley, imperialshadows 7090 Crossbow Attack - Shine, Sir Dillon, Sinner 7091 Knights' Catapult Defense - john cleese 7093 Skeleton Tower - Hinckley 7259 ARC-170 Fighter - Hinckley, Sinner (Mine is currently re-built into an X-Wing but it is an option...) 7657 AT-ST - Hinckley, imperialshadows 7692 MX-71 Recon Dropship - john cleese 7694 MT-31 Trike - john cleese 7701 Grand Titan - imperialshadows 7702 Thunder Fury - imperialshadows 7707 Striking Venom - Hinckley, Sinner 7708 Uplink - optimus-convoy, Sinner, Hinckley, imperialshadows 7709 Sentai Fortress - Hinckley 7017 Viking Catapult vs. Nidhogg Dragon - optimus-convoy, Hinckley 7092 Skeleton Prison Carriage - Sinner 7770 Deep Sea Treasure Hunter - Shine, Sir Dillon, optimus-convoy, imperialshadows 7771 Angler Ambush - john cleese, Sir Dillon 7785 Arkham Asylum - Hinckley, Sir Dillon, imperialshadows 7786 Batcopter - Hinckley, imperialshadows 7991 Garbage Truck - Shine, Hinckley, Sinner (My boy has this and I could borrow it...) 7945 Fire Station - Hinckley 8100 Cyclone Defender - optimus-convoy, Hinckley, Sinner (My boy has this and I could borrow it...) 8101 Claw Crusher - Shine, Sinner, Hinckley, john cleese 8106 Aero Booster - john cleese 8141 Off Road Power - Shine 8877 Vladek's Dark Fortress - Hinckley, imperialshadows I will add more of mine soon... *yoda* has said that he thinks a theme would be a good idea. Personally I would prefer no theme (hence the Free Form part), but if this is the will of the people then so be it! *sweet* (It would be a LSMP in that case.) Quote
Hinckley Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 Hmmm...FFLSMP. Catchy. Way to coin a new acronym, Sinner. Shall I start a poll as to how to pronounce it? I'd vote for Fufulasmop. Anyway, as I've been building for our little smackdown, here are two sets I wish I had to work with: 7707-Striking Venom 7709-Sentai Fortress As for my dream situation: To mix it up into other themes, these sets would be cool in one challenge: 8877 Vladek's Dark Fortress 7945 Fire Station 7785 Arkham Asylum For fun and randomness, these two sets: 7786 Batcopter 3825 Krusty Krab Of course, I still think a blind drawing would be best! :-$ Quote
Siegfried Posted August 5, 2007 Author Posted August 5, 2007 OK. I get the hint. :'-( Could anyone please tell me what I could do to make this idea more appealing? Less pieces? A single set? Different name? Or should me and Hinckley just have another challenge next month? (We are considering doing that anyway...) Quote
Shine Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Could anyone please tell me what I could do to make this idea more appealing?Smaller sets would be nice. Most of us are only into a few themes, so if you try to use expensive sets from a lot of different themes, chances are that most people won't have them, nor be they willing to drop the sort of cash needed to acquire them just for an online contest. However, if you were to use cheaper, five to twenty dollar sets from various themes, the people that weren't into some of the sets' themes, and subsequently didn't have the sets, would be much more willing to purchase them and participate. Siegfried Posted August 5, 2007 Author Posted August 5, 2007 Smaller sets would be nice. What do you think should be the maximum piece count? Quote
Shine Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 What do you think should be the maximum piece count? I guess what I meant by "smaller" was just cheaper. Quote
El Bucanero Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 (edited) I guess what I meant by "smaller" was just cheaper. I agree, not everyone has the money to buy big sets of several themes were the challenger/challenged isn't even in to. So basicly, I think it would be better to take smaller, and cheaper sets. Like: Etc. Probably also harder to make a MOC with, so that makes the challenge more challenging. Mr Tiber Edited August 5, 2007 by Mr Tiber Quote
Siegfried Posted August 5, 2007 Author Posted August 5, 2007 But that was the whole point of this thread; people say what they have and once we find five people with enought of the common sets we start another competition. I never even mentioned buying sets. I certainly wouldn't buy a set just for a competition myself! Hinckley's examples were only that, and if you look at the list at the top, I had only one avaliable. I would really like to do this and I still hope I can find five people (hopefully including me!) to participate. While enjoyable, a two person comp is too personal and risks causing tension. The more the merrier I think, and I am prepared to go for any set, no matter how old, or even a list of parts. I even said "possibly even with no fixed colours" to make it easier. The entire point for this competition was to level the playing field for people with less bricks, not force people to buy more. So basicly, I think it would be better to take smaller, and cheaper sets.Like: -snip- Etc. Probably also harder to make a MOC with, so that makes the challenge more challenging. Mr Tiber Are these just random examples? Quote

xwingyoda Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 I would pick sets that are comprised between 4.99 Quote
Siegfried Posted August 5, 2007 Author Posted August 5, 2007 I would pick sets that are comprised between 4.99€ and 19.99€ ;-) Its also more fun and difficult to build out of smaller sets :-P *yoda* I was hoping to avoid that as I wanted people to do the work for me! X-D I wanted then to post what they had, and then I would try to put together a competion based on that. However, what it seems I will have to do is try and put together a few suitible combos.... or I could just give up and do another competition with Hinckley! Thanks for the replies! *sweet* I have got more to go on now. Quote
Shine Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 (edited) How about- 8101, Claw Crusher 7770, Deep Sea Treasure Hunter 7090, Crossbow Attack 4917, Mini Robots 7991, Garbage Truck Edited August 5, 2007 by Shine Quote
Sir Dillon Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 I might be interested in doing something like this with you guys. The only set I have that you listed is the Arkham Asylum, though. Quote
SuvieD Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Smaller sets would be better. I think you should perhaps even focus one or more sets with no figures. Those always seem to have more pieces for the money. A lot of people don't have sets built and available either. Lots of people part out sets right away or use them for other mocs. It might be a good idea to go with new sets. Quote
Siegfried Posted August 5, 2007 Author Posted August 5, 2007 How about- Thanks very much! *sweet* I have added them. I might be interested in doing something like this with you guys. The only set I have that you listed is the Arkham Asylum, though. I will be adding some of my possiblities soon. Hopefully we can find at least 500 pieces of common sets. A lot of people don't have sets built and available either. Lots of people part out sets right away or use them for other mocs. It might be a good idea to go with new sets. I tend to keep sets together for a year and then break them. (Some I don't though.) I haven't had a set that I have never made yet. (Ignoring doubles.) But I could change the proposal to say "or would be prepared to buy", but I don't want to exclude people who can't easily buy more. Quote
Hinckley Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 While enjoyable, a two person comp is too personal and risks causing tension. Do you feel tension between us? :'-( Was it the poop in the bucket? I'm sorry. :-$ (I'm just kidding. I understand what you meant. :-P ) Here's a snazzy idea! Maybe we could have a competition where people choose their favorite set and build an alternative model out of it. Or we could make a list of 10-20 specific parts that competitors have to use in an MOC along with as many other pieces as they want. It would be cool to see how many different uses people could come up with for those 10-20 required pieces. Another idea would be to have a Eurobricks Bag Thread where someone compiles a list of 200 pieces (maybe with reasonable alternatives) and people could post what they make with those pieces. It wouldn't have to be a competition it could just be interesting to see how different each MOC would be... Or to be more like our smackdown, we could have people choose two sets that they already own from their favorite theme combine the pieces and build an MOC. That way every member could join the competition. But now to go back on topic, here are the sets I have and would be willing to break: 7259 ARC-170 Fighter 4478 Geonosian Fighter 4502 X-Wing Fighter 7657 AT-ST 7020 Army of Vikings 7021 Vikings vs Ofnir 7018 Viking Ship 7093 Skeleton Tower Quote
Sir Dillon Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 I think just using sets is still the best option. Out of the new sets you listed, I have 7020, and 7018. Quote
Hinckley Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 I think just using sets is still the best option. Out of the new sets you listed, I have 7020, and 7018. Sinner is editing the first post to contain everyone's list and who has them so check against the first post... Quote
Sir Dillon Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Sinner is editing the first post to contain everyone's list and who has them so check against the first post... Mmmkay. Looking over that again, I also have 7090 Crossbow Attack, and 7770 Deep Sea Treasure Hunter. Quote
Shine Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Two more suggestions I had forgotten to mention- 6205, V-Wing Fighter 8141, Off Road Power Quote
Sir Dillon Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Just thought I'd add that I really like Yoda's idea of deciding on a certain theme. Quote
optimus-convoy Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 I'd like to take part in one of these sometime. A few sets I'd break up: 7708 Uplink 8100 Cyclone Defender 4939 Cool Cars 4417 Aero Pod X-Pod (2006) 7770 Deep Sea Treasure Hunter and maybe 7017 Viking Catapult vs. Nidhogg Dragon Quote
Hinckley Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 I also have: 4884 Wild Hunters (some of which is in an MOC, but enough of it anyway) 4954 Model Townhouse (is on it's way, with another ice cube tray *sweet* ) 7708 Uplink 7017 Nidhogg etc 8100 Cyclone Defender 7018 Viking Ship - Hinckley, Sir Dillon (I have this but I have customised it...) *wub* Can we see? *sweet* Please Quote
