Hammerhand Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 (edited) Dinas Brynmor is the capital city of Ferinwæld. Built upon a large hill, it has an ideal view of the surrounding land, and it's elevated position makes it highly defensible. Dinas Brynmor was once an old caer, but it's been expanded over many years to become a small city, and now is the home of many Ferinwældians. The wooden outer walls are mainly made of a solid, treated oak, making it largely fire-resistant, though the lower part of the wall is reinforced with stone. The front gates and guard house. View of one of Dinas Brynmor's many meeting halls. The keeper of the hall is bringing a travel-weary Gwawl Ceisiwr monk a drink, as this order is held in the highest regard by the people of Ferinwæld. Sir Brychan rides in with several of his guards, greeted by his advisor and bard, Heulwen. Some children are playing a game of 'tracker', a more physical version of hide and seek that's meant to teach tracking skills as well as wrestling. View with the gates closed. This is a build I've had in the works for a month or so, I just finally got around to photographing it. I'm hoping to start building up my city/province, and create a bit of culture and background for Ferinwæld, as I've kind of slacked in that area... I'm largely basing Ferinwæld around old welsh culture, but I'm also kind of incorporating a bit of norse influence in some of my buildings, since my lands border Mitgardia (I figured it would make sense to have a bit of overlap). Bonus: Dinas Brynmor is (ruffly) old welsh for "city of the great hill." C&C welcome, and thanks for looking! Edited March 8, 2015 by Hammerhand Quote
Graham Gidman Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 This is fantastic, just fantastic! Great work! Quote
Capt Wolf Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Great scene! So much detail, so much to like! I especially like your use of leaves to create thicker, less manicured grass. Your use of decorated tiles on the guard house and the printed LOTR shield on the meeting hall are nice subtle touches that give the scene a sense of place. Figure posing is superb! And the well has a very interesting construction. Quote
Blufiji Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Wonderful build. I like the small details-barrels, wooden logs, the touches of autumn. All very nice.. Quote
MiloNelsiano Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Wow. I really like this castle design. You've also included a lot of neat details. I might have to try to make a well with your design sometime. Quote

I was trying to find a good way to create a circular well, and I remembered seeing someone used a similar technique a while back, so I sort of came up with this. Love the build my friend! The wooden walls att just great!! Thanks a lot de Gothia! Fantastic work all around. The activity within the walls is really well done; adds character and liveliness. Thank you mate! Awesome! Only nitpick is that the ground outside looks a bit unfinished? Looking forward to seeing more of this city Thank you Gideon! I agree about the ground outside the wall, it was just not quite enough space to fit any of my dark green leaves. Looking back, I wish I'd made it a little farther back, so I could do some more landscaping. Very nice build, lovely use of texture and the colour palette is very suitable. Great detailing too. Thanks robuko! This is really a fantastic MoC!!! I can't wait to see more of this city!!!! Cheers Maxim! I've got some more ideas for my city, so hopefully I can build them after the Kaliphlin challenge. Very well done! Thank mate! Beautiful build! mccoyed Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Great well. That roof just stands out even though everything else is impeccable also! Quote
Basiliscus Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Beautiful build! The wall and gatehouse and mightily impressive, it's nice to see a LEGO fortification that is large enough for riders to get through without looking like they could vault onto the walls. The inside landscaping and buildings are really nice, and your minifig use is excellent. I agree with Gideon that the exterior landscaping could be improved, but that's only a minor point. Look forward to hearing more of Ferinwæld and its people. Quote
Kai NRG Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Excellent work on this build Hammerhand! The wooden wall looks really good with the alternating log bricks and larger pillars, and the meeting hall inside is very nice as well! Very nice job on the well, too! Quote
Garmadon Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Superb woodwork Hammerhand, excellent wall, gatehouse, and meeting hall The stone base of the wall works very nicely, awesome well and landscaping too Great little details such as the bell, barrels, woodpile, and keys on the gate as well Quote

I admit, the stone mixed with wood wall was strongly inspired by Edoras from LOTR... Edited March 9, 2015 by Hammerhand Quote
soccerkid6 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Wow Great to see more Norse styled builds, you've done a wonderful job with these buildings. The battlements, scaffolding/railing, barrel beams, and hinge use are my favorite parts Lovely well too, I hadn't thought of using that roof design for a well, but it works perfectly Quote
