I've had an idea for Pirate MOC (steampunk pirates, actually) for quite awhile, and was about to start this week. I suppose I could alter it a bit and have Space Pirates instead, this contest sounds like too much fun to miss out on!

Thanks Bob de Quatre!

Steampunk pirates are most definitely science fiction!!

Mmmmmmyeaaaaahh...but I think steampunk wouldn't be keeping close to the theme of the contest, since after all it specifically states "Space Pirates", so I think I'll just stick to that.

If your ship is airtight so that it can survive without an atmosphere, and it has rockets* to navigate in an airless environment, I think a steam-punk ship would be fine.

*Or you could have the ship propelled by steam.

I don't think anybody's entry will rise to the level of that magnificent tiki robo ape dude on the frontpage, but I'm looking forward to being proved wrong

What's really funny is I bought some clothes online last month, they turned up today (so I'd sorta forgotten what was on them) and one of them says on the front:

SPACE PIRATE

How cool is that...

Or even better than that, a Space Pirate Castle like this one I built many years ago :)

Great! I considered mentioning all 3 together but didn't think it could be pulled off properly

For Category A - is it meant to be a "crew" of 6 minifigs that go together cohesively? Or can it be 6 complete individuals from across the Galaxy?

Steampunk isn't space... but if you mix some more futuristic bits in it, it could pass.

If we enter Category A, are we allowed edit a fig or create a new one in place of one before the deadline passes? It says in the post that MOCs are considered wips, but what about the minifigs.

Of course, you are free to change your entry before the deadline.

Then you have no excuses for not entering

You are free to have a crew or unrelated figs.

What do you think of a red and tan futuristic space tavern??? I have no money to buy extra parts.

also does anyone have tips for cyborg builds?

and what are the recommended measurements (in pixles)

If you printed on the paper, eh... If you drew it yourself-recipe for disaster. As an avid custom decal maker, I started out trying to make decals with double sided tape and paper, and it was awful. Ten to one that your colors won't match up and that they will be to light to show up. I recommend printing on sticker paper or label sheets, but be careful, they can really mess up a printer.

OK I came up with another question last night. For category B could we take an old lego pirates set and convert it to space/futuristic?

No, this must be an original creation, not an existing set.

Well I finally came up with my design I am either doing a space base for the pirates(need to find my stone pieces) or a red tavern. I already have a crew of 10 and some nervous visitors to the tavern/ prisoners.

I am having a hard time wrapping my head around how to blend space and pirate. It sounds Steampunk in some respects (which is another theme I can't wrap my head around).

I mean, something that is flying but has cannons. I think the mix of technology is what throws me. How to make it consistent? But I think I have a hard time thinking futuristic anyway.

You aren't the only one. I have a group of space thief characters in mind, but they aren't all that pirate-y in the sense that they use Pirate-themed parts. And I don't want to give my figures a peg leg or swap their gun with a sabre just so they fit the theme...

Let me put it this way - I see "space pirates" as characters stealing spacecraft and causing havoc in a planetary sector. I don't think it's strictly related to the LEGO Pirate theme and its motifs, so the fact that this contest wants you to use them throws me off a bit.

I think it's open to interpretation. That's the space where creativity lives.

For visual representations in pop culture there are plenty of examples of space pirates e.g. Disney's Treasure Planet or Space Raider corn snacks from the UK.

Which reminds me I'm hungry...and only a sci fi themed corn snack will suffice.

steampunk can most definitely be space but your the boss! :)

Google steampunk space pirate and see how many hits you get...

I'm going to make some steampunk space pirates outside of the competition. Hopefully I can convince some people it is possible! :)

My entry is going to be more in keeping with the traditional pirate line :)

Scratch that! I'm being dumb :/

B is for the sake of a teamwork and C is individual for each. Yay! :)
