sm1995 Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Hi everyone, I would like to post a WIP picture of my current MOC. It's a truck with a loading box and a knuckleboom crane on the back. The chassis and cabin is 90% completed so I thought I would post a WIP picture to hopefully get some constructive feedback :) I am still working on the crane, but it's proving to be pretty hard to make it look good while also being functional. Also I'm really sorry about the dirty table! I just noticed it and my camera is dead haha. Thanks for reading! Quote
jorgeopesi Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 That looks very cool. Very cool indeed! I agree. Quote
Lakop Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 (edited) Your truck looks great. I like the yellow and black cab. Welcome to Eurobricks. H Edited March 18, 2015 by Horace T Quote
Dafgek81 Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 Very nice!!! Is the cabin inspired on a excisting brand?? Quote
sm1995 Posted March 19, 2015 Author Posted March 19, 2015 Thanks everyone :) the cabin isn't inspired by any particular brand of truck, sorry. But since I uploaded the pictures I have made the area around the windshield cleaner and added a set of spotlights. So it looks a little better now. Quote
sm1995 Posted March 20, 2015 Author Posted March 20, 2015 (edited) would you be making instructions for it? Probably not, I do not have time to make instructions. :( I charged my camera back up and managed to take a few not-so-awful pictures of the truck. As you can see the drivetrain is still not connected and there are visible wires etc that need to be cleaned up. Anyway, this is a manually controlled moc with HOG steering. The functions are powered by 1 L-motor which is placed between the two front axles (it will be disguised as an oil tank or something of the sort). There's one gearbox in the middle that splits the single input from the motor into 4 driven axles, and two gear selectors on either sides to switch between the functions. The selector on the right controls the extension of the outriggers and the rotation of the crane, while the selector on the left controls the 2 crane arms. It was pretty challenging making the gearbox compact enough to fit between the two wheels without making the wheelbase overly long and and the chassis overly wide. So I had to use a LOT of 16teeth clutch gears to keep the 4 output axles as close as possible while driving 4 independent functions. I think I used somewhere around 20 just for the functions. As for the crane, this is where you guys can help me. Should go for an "open" looking crane like the on the Unimog or a completely closed one like the one on jurgen's Link Belt excavator? Great looking cab and overall truck. Thank you! :) I am a big fan of your cars. They are awesome. Edited March 21, 2015 by sm1995 Quote
sm1995 Posted March 20, 2015 Author Posted March 20, 2015 Also here's a very rudimentary version of the crane.. It can't lift much right now, needs more reinforcing. Quote
Dafgek81 Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Although you say you won't be making instructions, I realy hope you will, love this!!! And yes I love lot off MOC's out there, but hope to get rich enough to build them all!!!!!  Quote
Milan Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 This is really one of the nicest looking studless trucks. Looking forward to see next update! Quote
Kumbbl Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Indeed. Best looking studless Truck chassis and cabin i know Quote
sm1995 Posted March 22, 2015 Author Posted March 22, 2015 (edited) Thanks a lot everyone! really appreciate the feedback :) I'm not so sure if I'll make instructions for this, sorry. But on my next build I'll take a picture every now and then which could serve as partial instructions. I already have ideas for another truck anyway I have been working hard on the crane for the past 2 days, the one pictured above was very flimsy and had a lot of flex to it, especially the pivot for the telescopic section which was really weak. So I decided to make the the 2nd section 4 studs wide and the pivot 2 studs wide instead of just 1. As a result it's pretty strong and I'm rather happy with the way the 2nd section turned out. But you guys can be judge of that, I'll post some pictures tomorrow when it's daytime. I'll probably start building the static "main" arm tomorrow. I've also made some minor improvements to the cabin, this panel gap right here was driving me crazy so I fixed it. Made some improvements to the front bumper too. Milan Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Make that crane good! This truck deserves great crane! Quote

Dafgek81 Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Still hope you'll make them, would be nice to build. Maybe I never can, but darn it would be nice!!! Quote
Jeroen Ottens Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 This is indeed one of the best studless trucks out there. It looks elegant (if you can say that about a truck). You asked for areas of improvement, but that is hard to do on such a beautiful model. The only minor things I noted are the position of the L-motor (it looks like it sticks out a bit too much), the blue friction pins in the chairs ('illegal construction' which can be remedied easily with the new 1L liftarms) and the black grill axles (I suspect again an 'illegal construction' for the top axle but also the slope is not continuously over the four axles. The lower two black axles should both be half a stud shorter on both sides to get a continuous slope from top to bottom) But other than that it looks just brilliant! Quote
sm1995 Posted March 22, 2015 Author Posted March 22, 2015 This is going to be a lengthy post with lots of pictures, so bear with me. Still hope you'll make them, would be nice to build. Maybe I never can, but darn it would be nice!!! Thank you! And I know the feeling man, I'd love to build Madoca's wing body truck, but I don't have enough money right now. Maybe someday... Thank you very much for the kind words and constructive feedack! and you are spot with your observations. The rational behind positioning the motor that way was that it could also double as a toolbox or tank of some sort. Kinda like the one on this truck. But now I realize that it just looks like a motor that's placed rather awkwardly . I'll try my best to cover it up. I fixed the seats by using two regular 7L liftarms because I don't have any 1L liftarms with me right now. Maybe in the future I'll some off of bricklink along with some other parts. Thanks for bringing that to my attention btw. You are also right about the grill having "illegal" construction, but since Lego doesn't produce odd sized black axles, I had no choice but to use illegal construction for both the very top and the very bottom axle. The shape of the grill though, is intentional. Instead of having one continous slope all the way down I wanted the grill to consist of two inverted trapezoids, the top one being slightly larger than the bottom one. That grill shape was inspired by the old mercedes Actros actually. Thanks for pointing it out though, maybe the shape doesn't translate that well into Lego and it looks like a mistake. I'll think about it more and see what i can do about it. Finally, a few pictures of the crane arm. I still don't know what I think about it, sometimes I think it looks good sometimes I don't. One thing I do know for sure is that it's really hard making a good looking studless crane using LAs. Quote
sm1995 Posted March 29, 2015 Author Posted March 29, 2015 (edited) Hi everyone, I think I'm done with this model. Sorry for the crappy pictures, I don't have a light setup yet so I'm relying on sunlight. Thanks for everyone who commented on and helped me out with this build! Edited March 29, 2015 by sm1995 Quote
Milan Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 You must be very proud how this truck turn out! It is really awesome. Crane trucks are my favorite kind of trucks and this - completed - really appeals to me! It seems that you have thought of everything. Two questions: When the video will be done, and how well does the crane works? Quote

Two questions: When the video will be done, and how well does the crane works? Thank you very much Milan! Ultimately I believe the crane would've been much nicer if it was pneumatic instead of being mechanically driven. I really wanted a 3 section crane but it's impossible to make one with LAs in this scale. So I am not 100% satisfied with it, but it's good enough. And I love crane trucks too! for my next build I'm debating between a crane truck with a big, 3 section pneumatic pneumatic crane and a supercar..... I really don't know what to choose. The crane works smoothly, no problems whatsoever. I don't know when I'll be able to do a video though, I have a very busy few weeks coming up. Edited March 29, 2015 by sm1995 Quote
