sithewok Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 It's definitely disappointing. The physical builds are nice with a lot of printed parts for the Defender machine, but the level itself is a let-down so far. Glad I didn't pay the full 30.00 for it (Gamestop has it for 19.99 right now), that's for sure. Quote
rob-ot5000 Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 I played Midway arcade for a bit - up to the first checkpoint - in between jobs. It's definitely fun for someone like myself (old enough to remember the arcade heyday...). I do wish that they had reprogrammed the original games to have some visual relationship with Lego. I didn't realize that it was just going to be emulated versions of the games, honestly. I thought that it would be lego-ized versions. That may have been common knowledge, but I missed it. It's kind of disappointing as the games seem like an "artificial" way of progressing through the level if that makes sense... Agreed. While it is fun to play the individual games, I have free emulators on my computer already, and a buttload more than Dimensions offers. That said, it has introduced me to a few games that I've never played and never WOULD have played if not for this. Was it worth the $16 it cost? Eh. Probably. Because that arcade cabinet build, with the printed tiles, is pretty darn cool. I get 20% of at Best Buy due to the Gamers Club discount, but if I had to pay the regular sale price of $20, or, god forbid, the original full price of $30, I would definitely be singing a different tune. And I surely agree with your assessment of the artificiality of the level progression. Very, very odd. And, aside from the lack of LEGO-fication of the games, they are also based on arcade version rather than NES version, so they are all ever-so-slightly different than I remember. It was so disappointing how poorly I did at Paperboy on my first attempt! AND ANOTHER THING! This was the first LEGO game I have owned and played, but I've since gone back and bought some of the older ones. One of the most disappointing missing features in LD is the ability to skip to different chapters of each level once you beat it. If you want to get to the arcade cabinet in the "Painting the Town Black" level, you have to play through the whole damn thing again just to get to there. Personally, I find that it gets boring pretty quickly, and it often keeps me from replaying the game. Bummer. Unrelated, Stay-Puft looks AMAZING, and hearing Superman's theme when he flies warms my heart Quote
Hulk_Smash Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Do you get any studs after you have finished playing on of the games in a level, or is it just play the game and move on with no reward? Quote
rob-ot5000 Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Do you get any studs after you have finished playing on of the games in a level, or is it just play the game and move on with no reward? You do indeed get studs, so that's nice, I suppose. There are three score-based thresholds at which studs are awarded. Honestly, stud-gathering is so much slower in this game compared to every other LEGO game that I actually forgot I don't already have 50 billion studs. Quote
gamejutzu Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 I actually forgot I don't already have 50 billion studs. It's because the game has no multipliers? I think they expect you to be good at their amazing and complex combat system... ... Or you just went to Arkham Asylum and farmed for money there... Quote
rob-ot5000 Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 It's because the game has no multipliers? Exactly. With the other games, there are so many multipliers, and I tend to look for those ASAP so I don't have to think about gathering studs. I've yet to do any "stud-farming" for this game. It's just too boring, for me. Quote

Koquillion Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 In UK so no Midway 'til Friday for me...but reading the last few posts, I'm really disappointed by the lack of LEGOization(??) in the games. I really enjoy the Gauntlet bit in the main game and being able to use all the different characters and it would have been brilliant to ride a winged monkey in Joust...or use Stay Puft in Rampage...just seems a bit cheap to me! DuckBricks Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Then... How do you have so much money... ? I'm not him, but I have a similar amount of studs just by playing the game and unintentionally picking up studs... Having all the characters released thus far helps as you get really get to every place in a level and get the most studs out of a level. Quote

I would very much like to play your version of the game over the originals. Or better yet, have both options available. Alas and alack. Still fun if you get it for a good price. Then... How do you have so much money... ? I was saying LEGO Dimensions is the only LEGO game I have where I DON'T already have tons and tons of studs. It's so easy to do in the other games, I forgot that it isn't the case with this one. I don't have a lot in this one, at least not enough to upgrade everything with reckless abandon. Quote
Darth Wayne Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Speaking of studs, i feel like i really don't NEED studs in this game compared to others...Stuff is really inexpensive. I mean sure, it's not like upgrade every vehicle numerous times since i already have characters that can take care of most of the needed abilities, but still. I constantly have around 3 million studs and then sometimes i use some for a repair event in a hub world or so which only costs like 75.000 or so... Quote

I'm guessing they weren't expecting to make much money from it so just put a quick story together around playing the arcade games. It's a shame they couldn't have gone for some more iconic arcade games like Pac-Man and Space Invaders instead of Midway Arcade stuff. Quote

Cuz Pac Man's a Namco franchise right? Quote
8BrickMario Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Right. Dalekbuster meant that more well-known games would have been preferable. Quote
Amset-Rah Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 I've been out of the loop for Dimensions lately, that wave 4 kind of snuck under me. I definitely need to get Midway soon, since I'm glad they actually have the classic games instead of a 100% legofied version like in the level in the main game. Would have been fun, but that's just me. Quote
Starscream759 Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Right. Dalekbuster meant that more well-known games would have been preferable. I know that I was just asking whether Pac Man was a Namco franchise. It's an honest question. Because I don't think Pac-Man would've been allowed amongst the games we have Midway Arcade. That's what I meant. Quote
badbob001 Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Regarding the emulated games In the Midway Arcade pack, are you able to have three to four players in certain games such as Guantlet and Rampage, despite the base game being limited to two players? Quote

It's a shame they couldn't have gone for some more iconic arcade games like Pac-Man and Space Invaders instead of Midway Arcade stuff. I've already done the 'reliving my childhood, retro compilation' stuff so I suppose that's taken the shine off it for me. I used to love Cyberball, and it would have been great to have made teams of 7 characters with different abilities, could have been crazy, but never mind. I do like the fact that Gamer Kid is totally original and exists purely for LD, unlike all the other figures. I suppose the retro-games are a bonus really, we are still getting a new level and Adventure World and more gold bricks! Quote
Starscream759 Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 On the bright side I'll have Aquaman to solve some of the puzzles now. Bad news is that I probably won't go after the Midway Arcade Level Pack after all. Quote
Koquillion Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Yeah, too right. Has rob got Ralph yet I wonder? Quote

But if you want to 100% what you currently own, you need to fully upgrade the vehicles, which costs more than 1,000,000 studs. I checked out the Midway Arcade pack, and it really doesn't seem to bad. I like how the problems in the level can't be solved with the usual "break2win" approach, and how you actually had to think to progress. Also, does the Lloyd fun pack come out in The 5th Wave? Because i'm not sure that people would even care about the fifth wave, since all the "cool" or "useful" characters were already released. Edited March 17, 2016 by gamejutzu Quote
Zergos Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Is there any idea when the next few waves will be announced officially? Quote
rob-ot5000 Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 (edited) Has rob got Ralph yet I wonder? He has not, because the thought of having to play through the whole darn level for the umpteenth time just to get to Ralph fills Rob with a deep sense of "uggghhhhhhh". But what the hell, I'm not busy, let's go save Ralph RIGHT NOW! I shall report back shortly! Because I know we're all on the edge of our seats regarding this issue. EDIT: "Ralph Wiggum Rescued? That's unpossible!" Yay. It was kinda fun jumping into the TARDIS and bypassing most of the level, so not too bad. I forget how awesome it is when the Who-music takes over. Good times. Time to kill zombies in COD! Edited March 18, 2016 by rob-ot5000 Quote

Lloyd does come out in the 5th wave - which I'm looking forward to because I like the dragons. Bane is kind of nice. We haven't had a real Bane figure since 2013 (not including the short leg one from the micro fighters). Slimer is also kind of cool - something we haven't had before except in the huge Ghostbusters set. I'm actually still looking forward to the fifth wave and beyond. Quote
