That was mentioned earlier in the thread. Some of us think it might be needed just for entering the game content from add-on packs - like, maybe the little disc-shaped bases don't actually have character info encoded on them right out of the box, but instead just have a code on them that lets the game know you have a certain character, and it triggers an Internet download, and that's where your in-game character actually comes from. And after that, the disc base just keeps track of a little bit of data, like how far that character has progressed, but doesn't actually store everything about it like the character rendering, animation, voice, etc.

We don't know yet, of course. But that could be how it works.

If my computing knowledge is anything to go by (and I took a course in it), the NFC chip itself holds little data. It will probably have a small string, that when read by the base, dependant on the location, will fire off an instruction to the game to spawn in a character, or a certain vehicle variant (this means the physical bricks mean nothing and just relocating the vehicle will change it in-game).

As seen from the side-shot of all console versions of the game, the portal device is the same.

Screen-Shot-2015-04-09-at-11.18.39-AM-1280x8661-600x405.png

A super close-up of the PS4 version shows that the portal has a long usb cable.

So this won't be wireless like some versions of other similar products. I wonder what would happen if I connect this to a PC. Hopefully, the portal hardware is exactly the same for all versions and you can use the same one for different consoles, but that only makes sense if they sell the game itself separately.

Wyldstyle's name is put as Wild Style, aaaah that bothers me.

Yeah this game is chock full of surprises! One that I just noticed is that on the box it says internet connection required. now maybe all games say this and im an idiot for pointing it out but it says it on the front and i've never noticed a lego game say that on the cover before. so if it is indeed unique then imagine how cool it would be if this game had an online function!! getting to run around the worlds with multiple other people would be awesome! I reeaaallly hope this happens! but again it could mean nothing and im getting hype over nothing but i really hope it does mean something

I don't think this game is meant to have anything like online multiplayer co-op. The Internet connection is to simply download the new content associated with the add-ons. If there was no Internet requirement, then all the characters and levels from the add-ons would already be on the original disk. That means you would be buying the add-on to unlock content that is already on the disk you bought, which is a practice that consumers don't like. Imagine buying the Doctor Who add-on six to nine months from now and realizing the game content for that was already created months before the game came out.

Why haven't we seen official Dimensions images or leaks of Ghostbusters yet? Have we seen The Simpsons anywhere (aside from the hints in the launch video?)

Posted

We have seen three sets for The Simpsons, thanks to the prematurely-posted instruction booklets; we know there will be a Level Pack with Homer Simpson, plus the family sedan and their TV set, and two FunPacks - one with Bart Simpson and a go-kart, the other with Krusty the Clown and a tiny clown car-type thing.

We haven't seen anything from Ghostbusters yet. I don't know why; they have now officially announced it., but haven't shown anything yet.

That's generally how all these toys to life games work. The NFC chip stores a tiny amount of data. Character name/type, statistics, xp etc. Everything else is in the games code itself. As far as I can tell, the internet connection will then be used to expand the game, as the initial release won't have the information needed for future characters beyond the 2015/16 waves, but patches/updates will allow for that.

Could any minifigures that are based on real-life historical people will be in this game?

If they do, maybe we will getting a Michelangelo from LEGO Movie in physical form since we got Abe Lincoln and Shakespeare.

It's possible, but I think all the figures in the game will come from themes and franchises that have some sort of fantastic or adventure-related component (at least some of the time - The Simpsons probably isn't what most people would consider an adventure series, but there have surely been many adventures over the course of the show). In light of what we know, I'm going back on some of my earlier guesses and assuming that "everyday life" themes like City and Friends won't be here (unless one counts their protrusion into other themes, like Bad Cop, Emmet and Wyldstyle all being basically City-type characters from The LEGO Movie).

I don't know about historical characters fitting into this milieu, though I guess you never know.

I'm against this saying, honestly. The only qualification for all characters is that they do belong to the LEGO franchise. City Police is already much wellknown as an action subtheme. Although TLM characters represent the classic City careers, but we all know they're still "different". And like you said, team TLM still can't cover some of the representive LEGO themes like bio-robots (BIONICLES) or schoolgirls (Friends).

Being a big fan of Friends myself, I also think crossover media would be the only chance for certain LEGO characters to "adventure". Although the Friends girls went through jungle rescue before, these themes are basically telling a peaceful life and there is really no good chance with in their own themes. With that said, they "need" the adventures more than the playable current characters do, despite their fighting ability is still unknown.

I think it just relies on the determination of LEGO themselves and the work team. CMF online is a very representive example where the team had to make all ordinary CITY characters capable in any kind of fight.

But like discussed before, the decisions were probably influenced by many other factors, like the targeted consumers are mostly licesne lovers and gamers so it leads to the absense of original LEGO themes. Just wish that LEGO can prove it wrong in futur updates.

Oh, I do think there's room for additional, LEGO-original themes; I just don't think there are going to be add-on packs representing "ordinary" stuff like bus drivers and mail carriers. But I do think we might get more "fantastic" or "adventurous" characters like Johnny Thunder, or even the Elves characters (and speaking for myself, I'd sincerely like to see that).

Well, it's a reasonable thought. I believe that some other characters from the currently unused themes have their supportors who would like to buy their packs and play as them in the game. I thought Elves is too new to join, but it looks like that LEGO spare their time to promote other newly-obtained licenses as their initial marketing strategy. Edited by Dorayaki

The only in-house LEGO themes are the ones that have been totally franchised out, with TV shows and a long theme life. Everything else is licensed, which is a shame, since kids buy more than just Ninjago, Chima, and licensed sets. Chima and Ninjago are long-standing enough to still be relevant, though, while other in-house themes could fade into obscurity depending on how long Dimensions lasts.

Perhaps, but I was thinking if they can include something like The Wizard of Oz, an acknowledged cinema classic that lots of people to this day still see as kids but still a movie that came out 76 years ago, they could conceivably include some vintage LEGO themes (and in a sense they are, with Benny from The LEGO Movie). But I was mostly thinking about much more recent, current or even brand-new themes, such as Elves (which launched a mere two months ago) or the current iteration of Pirates.

My thought about the in-house licenses is that sadly, unless it's franchised like Ninjago or Chima, they're not going to get into the game. Think of who is making this game, besides Travellers Tales: WB Games. I'm guessing that this is their direct competition to Disney Infinity, disguised with Lego as to not look like a ripoff.

I'd love to be wrong though. I would die for a Fun Pack with Agent Chase and the old Agents HQ truck.
