Hello everybody!

With the release of Ep 7 slowly approaching, along with the numerous plans Disney has for the Star Wars franchise, I have a strong feeling that LEGO Star Wars is in for a complete overhaul. Not only are we in for a new trilogy of films, an animated series, AND stand-alone spin-offs, but it was also recently announced that, as of 2015, Marvel will be publishing all Star Wars comic books (http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/news/marvel-to-publish-star-wars-comics-in-2015-20140103).

So with all of this new material in store for the Star Wars universe, and LEGO having deals through Disney/Marvel/Lucasfilm, there is a likelihood that we could end up seeing sets based on the upcoming ST, Rebels, spin-off films, and comic book series, all in the works for roughly the next 5-7 years.

Do people think that Disney's involvement will force LEGO to change how they develop sets, at what pace they develop them, and at what times they get released? And do you think that this overload of new material will cause a lull in PT/OT sets, and perhaps thats why LEGO has made an effort to update the majority of the sets and characters from the current 6 films to make up for the dry spell ahead?

I think we will see a major lull in PT and TCW era subjects. (Although clones remain very popular so you never know.) I don't think we will see a substantial change to how Lego does things with regards to Star Wars. They have long had a good working relationship with both Lucasfilms and Disney. And they have a long history of supporting Lucasfilms specific marketing goals with their product line.

Case in point 2008 http://www.brickset.com/browse/themes/?theme=Star%20Wars&year=2008

Notice how focused on PT and even more, the new Clone Wars series, the year was? The only OT set was the Deathstar. I think we are now moving towards the opposite. Disney's marketing goals will be to focus attention on their new products, using the OT as the leaping off point. So they will be seeking to downplay or cleanse the fan pallet of the PT for a bit. The only things I see coming directly out of the Marvel side of things is maybe one or two comic tie in sets? Maybe we will see Minifigs of a green rabbit man smuggler and his partner a nearly naked platinum blonde? Other than that TLG probably already has a product matrix plan starting with OT and Rebels this summer, with Rebels peaking in the next winter 2015 wave followed by a huge Ep VII push to begin teasing early that summer and hit full force with an early winter 2016 wave landing in Q3 2015.

One interesting bit of news I saw today (and unfortunately don't have a link handy) is that Disney has designated a team to determine the canonicity of Extended Universe elements. This team will go through all the released material and decide what counts as being in the Star Wars universe (probably stuff like The Old Republic, Shadows of the Empire, and other things that don't disrupt the films) and what never "really" happened (Christmas special, stuff that takes place after Return of the Jedi that would place too many constraints on what future films will be able to do)

They also plan on having this team vet any new materials that are created, so that anything that takes place in the Star Wars universe from here on out will have a "stamp of approval" from a central body. This means closer integration between the Expanded Universe and the Movie Universe, and will likely mean that the movies will acknowledge the EU more than they did before. I think this also opens the doors for more EU sets from Lego, seeing as they will be more "important" to the overall story than they were before.

As far as the new films are concerned, obviously Lego is going to have sets focused on them, and this is going to cut back on the number of sets allocated to the Prequel and Original trilogies (especially when the films are released) but I think Lego and Disney will acknowledge that there is a desire among fans for the classics. And if the past is any indicator, I'd expect Lego to throw OT fans a rather large bone whenever the sets are very focused on a new property, similar to how the Sandcrawler was released in 2005 along with Episode 3 stuff, and the Death Star was released in 2008 with the Clone Wars.

One interesting bit of news I saw today (and unfortunately don't have a link handy) is that Disney has designated a team to determine the canonicity of Extended Universe elements.

I have heard this as well, though the article I read was very skeptical of any potential results, and said they will most likely scrap everything but the movies, because the rest is so ridiculously jumbled, and Ep 7 is supposed to be totally new material, so no Yuuzhan Vong and Palpatine reincarnations. The main guy who is in charge is on twitter @HolocronKeeper. The difference now for EU stuff getting in, is that it will have the same level of credibility (officially) as the movies, whereas before the movies were still considered more correct than everything else.

I am really excited about the designs of ships that will be created for this movie, as I feel they could come up with some very cool stuff that will pave the way for some awesome sets and MOCs.

Simple. Just do what I do and ignore anything that's not a TV series or Film (excluding the Christmas Special {except the Boba cartoon}).

There Disney I just saved you lots of dollars .

With the advent of new material we will probably see a decline in the number of redesigns (thats probably why theyre going all out with redesigning old models recently)

It probably also depends on the tone and the atmosphere of the new movies. Be it family-values-space-saga of the OT, the colorful-childish-action PT, or something darker and more realistic.

I doubt they'd scrap "everything but the movies"; I see no reason why the Old Republic material (from both the Knights of the Old Republic and the MMORPG video games) should get the axe- stuff that happened thousands of years in the past shouldn't have much of an impact on the new movies, and they were among the most popular Star Wars subfranchises; I don't think they would get the axe.

Similarly, the whole Shadows of the Empire event was created as a "Star Wars movie without actually making a movie" type of thing, with very heavy input directly from LucasFilm. With all the effort that went into making sure it fit into Star Wars canon, I don't see it getting chucked aside easily.

Finally, I'd like to think anybody with the job title "Keeper of the Holocron" would have quite a bit of fondness for the extended universe, and would try to do everything in their power to keep as much in canon as they could. I think the big post-ROTJ stuff will have to go so that writers aren't constrained and fstorylines aren't spoiled, and this will be a great chance to prune any continuity issues, but hopefully the rest will remain intact.

That needs to be updated. I can't believe it's already over 5 years old.

Well, if they do go forward with a top-to-bottom review of all Star Wars canon, I think an updated encyclopedia would be a very obvious byproduct of that- they'll have to find a way to tell the fans what remains and what is gone, right?

If I'm reading the dates right, it looks like the current version was released in 2008 and the prior version was 1998. That means they had previously updated right before a trilogy and again a few years after. Maybe they will do the same thing again?

I would like to see a duel of the fates set. the front part could be a small hangar with sliding doors to reveal darth mual. behind that could lead to the generator with a few of those pinkish bar things with platforms around them, a bridge leading up to at least 3 or 4 those trans-red shields, and at the end the pit. minifigs could include obi-wan, qui-gon, darth mual, padme in that purple naboo outfit, panaka, and 1 or 2 naboo guards. I would like droidekas too, but i'm not sure those qualify as minifigures.

Droidekas do count. the encyclopedia has them in it so don't be surprised

After all the hype, I was so disappointed with how mediocre that book actually was. But I might be a bit biased as I just don't like Steve Perry as an author much.

IMO anything written by Timothy Zahn is leagues better, and I hope going forward the franchise doesn't do anything to ignore or stamp out the work he's done in the EU.

To me a great premise for the Ep 7-9 movies would've been Timothy Zahn's trilogy (Heir to the Empire, etc.). But alas the original cast is far too old now.

Well I want Lego to make a geonosian execution arena or part of it, from the film Attack of the Clones and it should be a $120-$150 AUD set featuring the three arena beasts in mini figure form, (reek, acklay, nexu) and the set should feature a gateway and a stand for geonosians and a viewing balcony with the minifigures of Count Dooku, Nute Gunray, Jango Fett, Poggle the Lesser and Boba Fett. The arena should feature the execution poles and Padme, Anakin, Obiwan and Mace Windu with a cape before he lost it in the arena.
