smokebelch Posted December 28, 2011 Author Posted December 28, 2011 (edited) Had a bit of an edit on an old Sandtrooper shot as I was never happy with this one originally. Unfortunatly no new Sandtroopers here, but thought id post it up- Looking for lost droids... by smokebelch, on Flickr First I've heard of someone going to the beach in England in December, but it's now hotter than it was in September . Great photos smokebelch it's good to see your photography again. Thanks, its nice to be back Actually got some good beach shots over the winter- depends on the sun being out though! Which obviously given the british weather doesnt happen much! I think my very first 'Tatooine' Sandtrooper shot way back on page 1 of the thread was taken in January- just weeks after I'd taken the Snowtrooper shot in the snow Edit- Haha yeah both these photos were taken in the same week in February, just days apart- Thats the British weather for you! Mr Man Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 More photos, this time Clone Wars centered! Hope you like them! I love the split legs on the BD commander JackJonespaw, and the lightsabre effects but Dooku's hilt should curve the other way. (unless you're covering up his non CW face?). Edit- Haha yeah both these photos were taken in the same week in February, just days apart- Thats the British weather for you! 14C in December (on Christmas day no less) . Quote

Orange Leader Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Looking for the droids photo looks wonderful, great lightning and composition. Quote
iMaker Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 I have a question to ask Smokebelch, When you upload pictures how do you keep them in their high quality? Do I have to save it to something like PNG? Is there a way of doing that automatic? Id just love my photos not to be blurry online. Thanks. And brilliant pictures above. Do you use green screen for pictures? Quote
smokebelch Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 Looking for the droids photo looks wonderful, great lightning and composition. Thanks just lit by good old sunlight, always the best- though given the weather in the UK often a rareity! I have a question to ask Smokebelch, When you upload pictures how do you keep them in their high quality? Do I have to save it to something like PNG? Is there a way of doing that automatic? Id just love my photos not to be blurry online. Thanks. And brilliant pictures above. Do you use green screen for pictures? Best place to upload I find is flickr, its free for a regular account and you can upload your shots in full resolution and then link to them in any size you like. I just use JPeg for mine, ive only got a relativly basic camera and now edit my shots on my iPad so they are generally not large file sizes. Really am a pretty amateur photographer- always pleased when people think im a pro and have a full DSLR, only got a £100 camera! Started out taking shots with my camera phone All my 'outdoor' shots are taken outdoors, either beach for 'tatooine' or forest for 'endor' best light you can have is real sunlight. Just need a bit of patience, and take LOTS of shots- will usually take over 100 and get em down to a couple when editing. If you get down low (very low!) you can get a great sense of scale with lego in a real world environment- just takes some experimenting. All my indoor shots with Lego I just use a plain white piece of A4 paper as a backdrop- no real room for lightboxes etc, and this works really well given the small size if Lego Minifigs. Best thing to do to get your shots in focus is to maje sure you've got the Macro function turned on on your camera, most cameras should have this option. Hope that helps Quote
Mr Man Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 New shot of the new R5 unit Blacker Than Black by smokebelch, on Flickr That looks a beautiful shot smokebelch, the lighting looks like it was take inside the Death Star . Quote

I had a look at my Camera, sadly no Micro Vision. Though I have an option called Flowers. Its intended for, yes you guessed it, flowers. It works very well for minifigures though. Wish I could show you a test photo, but the batteries just ran out and the spare ones have just exploded. Quote
smokebelch Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 (edited) That looks a beautiful shot smokebelch, the lighting looks like it was take inside the Death Star . Thanks, as always still lit with my trusty old iPod touch I had a look at my Camera, sadly no Micro Vision. Though I have an option called Flowers. Its intended for, yes you guessed it, flowers. It works very well for minifigures though. Wish I could show you a test photo, but the batteries just ran out and the spare ones have just exploded. Yeah that'll be the macro function- they will often list it as flowers. Just make sure you aim it at whatever you want to be in focus in the shot, when your shooting using the macro function you get a very narrow depth of field, meaning you'll have whatever is in the background blurry but whatever the main focal point is nice and sharp. As an example using the shot you posted, you MAY find the camera would automatically focus on the escape pod in the background meaning the minifigs would be blurry. So long as you make sure you aim at the figs when focusing you should get nice result. Best of luck Edited January 3, 2012 by smokebelch Quote
iMaker Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 (edited) Okay thanks for the tips, tried again: I quite like the fact that the pod is blurry. Edited January 3, 2012 by iMaker Quote
smokebelch Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 Okay thanks for the tips, tried again: I quite like the fact that the pod is blurry. Getting there- shows what I said about the narrow focus- you have the pod blurry in the background, but also the Sandtrooper at the front is also a bit out of focus, where the Orange Pauldron Sandtrooper is in focus. Where they are stood apart there's gonna be no way round that, but maybe try having both Troopers together in the foreground the camera will then focus on them and they should both be sharp. Quote
Masked Builder Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 That R5 shot looks good! I can't wait to see some more shots from you. Quote

I'm not sure if the sandpaper doesn't look too yellow, though. Cheers Brickdoctor- yeah the sandpaper's not perfect, but was just a quick addition as had some laying around. Used a yellow light as well with that one. Would have ideally done a shot on the actual beach, but weather is horrible at the mo Here's another, again would have been better outdoors but have to make do with a quick indoor set-up Bad Motivator by smokebelch, on Flickr Quote
Brickdoctor Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 I like this one without the yellow light a lot better. Quote
