XimenaPaulina Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 Great shot afosl! How did you capture that red spot there? Quote
afosl Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 (edited) Nice lighting Thank You. Great shot afosl! How did you capture that red spot there? Thank You. The red spot is a lens flare brought on by shining the light, un-diffused, directly at the front of the model so that top corner really shone. The flare was actually unintentional, but added a certain something to the model against the dark background. The drawback being here is that the black chin cannons seem to blend into the mechanism underneath. There's no definition, just a mass of black plastic. Edited November 26, 2010 by afosl Quote
Enpaz Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 Great shot afosl! I wholeheartedly agree. Great photograph, good lighting, and the (rather) new AT-ST is also nice, of course. Photos on! Quote
Brickdoctor Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 Love the background and the shot as a whole. Judging by the fact that the bluish greys look like old greys, however, you might want to adjust the white balance. I'm not sure if that was an effect you were going for, though. Quote
CommanderFox Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 Cool lighting afosl! and nice shot. CF Quote

Muchas gracias. This AT-ST is definitely the best one so far in minifig scale. Love the background and the shot as a whole. Judging by the fact that the bluish greys look like old greys, however, you might want to adjust the white balance. I'm not sure if that was an effect you were going for, though. The back ground is just a piece of black velvet material that sucks up the light. The light on the model is a normal halogen spot - about 20 watts. And although two came with a table top photo studio, the lamps are not specialized. They are typical of any bulb found in any supermarket so burn in the cooler end of the spectrum, i.e. yellow to red. Hence they bring out the warmer colours in the picture and neutralize the natural blue tinge of the grey Lego. I wasn't actually thinking about colour correction or D65 when I took the shot. Mostly I concentrate on the correct focus and on the exposure time so the photo isn't too dark or too washed out, or too full of digital noise which can happen when going to extremes of lighting and exposure time. And as I look at the AT ST now, under normal room lighting (yellow to red burning halogen spots - soon to be replaced with LED), all the blue colours have gone and the model looks like it was built using the older greys. Maybe next time I use the spots for photography, I'll look into manual colour correction on the camera. As far as I know, I tend to use the pre loaded settings for lighting/white balance (sunlight, fluorescent, tungsten, etc) and just click away. Cool lighting afosl! and nice shot. CF Thank you very much, Mr. Fox. Edited November 26, 2010 by afosl Quote

So this was a 'no-edit' type of photo (like smokebelch's) that you were aiming for? Quote
afosl Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 Ah. So this was a 'no-edit' type of photo (like smokebelch's) that you were aiming for? Apart from cropping to remove excessive empty space or background when necessary, I don't alter my photos post production. I'm very 'un-George Lucas' in that respect. I don't actually know how to use these photo shop type programs like Paint.net, even though I have it on my pc. If I can get it right in camera I'm happy and that's normally the way the photo will be shown. Quote
General Magma Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 I decided to do a couple of shots of my newly created, custom Savage Opress minifig. Great shots Magma and Spock! Loving Savage, Magma! You should create a topic in the MCW forum, to show him in all his glory! Haha I love the AT-ST Archoo shot dr_spock. Keep it up all! CF Quote

General Magma Posted November 27, 2010 Posted November 27, 2010 Does Savage Opress actually have a double bladed lightsaber? Yes, he does. He also uses that staff-axe weapon of his, as you can see in one of the Savage Opress trailers. Thanks for the comments, all! shadowreaperx Posted November 27, 2010 Posted November 27, 2010 Superb photography! The lighting, backgrounds, scenes, custom accessories are all great! How do people like you do this? It's amazing! Quote
smokebelch Posted November 27, 2010 Author Posted November 27, 2010 Congrats! I'm a little slow, don't recall you telling us that. No worries, mentioned it way back briefly- but didn't want to go off topic Thanks for the congrats- she's pretty darn adorable! Having a 6 month old daughter to raise at the moment does complicate things, may I just ask what her name is? She's called Hope (And despite my Star Wars obsession the 'A New Hope' SW referance wasn't bought to my attention till after my wife thought of the name- honest!) Any tips and idea's on how to get the lighting that Smoky gets? I've been fiddling around, but can't get it. Do you need anything special to achieve it? Thanks! Most of my indoor shots are just lit with a torch app on my Ipod Touch- wayyyy back on about page 4 of the thread I posted a bit about how I light my shots which goes into a bit more detail. Great to see some many new shots on here- great work everyone- wish i had the time to contribute more these days. To celebrate the thread hitting 100 pages thought id add a new shot, whilst most of the UK is covered in snow alas down in the south there's no sign yet, so its just an indoor one- Wampa Vs Snowtroopers by smokebelch, on Flickr I've always been fascinated by the deleted scenes involving the wampa from Empire Strikes Back. There was a big bit with the wampas attacking the echo base and being trapped in a room by R2-D2's bleeps, only for the unsuspecting Snowtroopers to blunder into the room later on during the attack and become Wampa fodder ;) A lot of the actual Wampa stuff wasn't actually filmed- but other bits n bobs were and snippets made it into trailers ie C-3PO tearing off the sign the rebels had put on the door to warn of its contents as the troopers attacked the base. So this is my small Lego recreation of some Wampa Vs Snowtrooper action ;) Quote
