He could think of one other like Omen who revealed itself to him, a chicken belonging to another hero... He addresses his companions. "How do we even know to believe these memoirs? It seems Melville lost his mind long ago. He could be making it up..."

Omen doesn't look threatened at all my Torc's movements, hopping up on the desk and staring right back into Hoke's eyes. '<Look, big man. You don't gotta trust me and I don't gotta trust you, but if you keep expecting a knife in your back, you're gonna be disappointed. All I want is my master back, and you're doing that anyway. This arrangement works for the both of us. How far d'you thing Scales over there would go to find you?>' quipped the feline, glancing at Torc. Hoke peels the note off the envelope. It's crumpled and hastily drawn. Inside the envelope is a heavy, magical artifact of some kind. Summoning Amulet Omen licks his paw as he stares at it. '<Hehehe. All used up, by the looks of it. Your bald friend and assassin lady might recognize it.>' Wait is Thalion still holding the staff, or did he drop it when he got hit by the first psychic blast? It's still on the table. "Yeah... So that staff is clearly bad news. We should figure out a safe way to carry it." Guts inspects the clamps, to see if they would be used to attach other objects to the staff. The clamps appear to be for holding the staff steady. Many of the other instruments are too fragile or magically-inclined for the heroes to make heads or tails out of, though it's a reasonable guess they're all for repairing the staff. The image of an impossibly dark void flooded his mind, leaving him permanently afraid for the foreseeable future. As Thalion touched the staff, an overwhelming urge to run away got over him. He didn't know why, but he found himself looking around the room for a blue box in which he could run, run to the ends of the universe and time itself. After the initial shock, he shook his head and got a hold of himself just as Mortimer was handing him over the gloves. He nodded and replied, but his word came out broken, "Th-thank y-you." He equipped the gloves instead of Emerald Hood, and used Craftsmanship to fix the staff.

There wasn't anythin' there then, but maybe somethin's changed. I think we should go back to the cannon room and see if this Veken fellow's hidin' outside the window instead, but I'll follow the rest of the party."

It hardly changes things now though, Melville is clearly insane and in position of a lot of power. He's a threat not only to Eubric but to all of Olegia. He needs to be eliminated. The shadowy aura dissipates as he picks it up. It now appears to safe to handle without the gloves - and bears a striking resemblance to the odd 'Cold Circle' diagram Hybros found on the table. Hybros brings the party back up to the gunport, carefully prodding upward under the window sill up above with his scythe. A furry black creature falls down with a thump, and morphs into a vampire form - the gangly, red-lipped man has an unholy aura around him, holding his black sword at the ready despite looking like he'd just been woken up from a nap. "...Hrrm?"
