The Legonater Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 Not dead, but he's in very poor condition. I wince slightly, clutching invisible wounds. He'll need some very intensive care. If Helvetia is 'helping' then Nephilim is looking all the more likely. I swear fluently in some Duplovian dialect. I've never seen something go downhill this fast. Let's finish this, quickly.
Emjajoas Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 Mortimer shuts up, clenching his weapon and shield in-hand. Things were getting shaky. At least none of the party had died. Yet.
Myrddyn Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 Erik slides his wand out of, and back into, it's place on his belt, checking it isn't likely to get caught on anything when he draws it, sets his cup down next to the doorway, ready for him to grab if he needs it, and grips his axe in both hands. "We runnin' in yellin', screamin' and hackin' at things like whatsies this time?" He mutters.
UsernameMDM Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 Hoke should be level 52.2 I believe, if he started the last fight at 51.6. Does that factor in the XP from the kitchen puzzle?
UsernameMDM Posted June 24, 2015 Posted June 24, 2015 "What else did you see in your vision Dyric?" Hoke asks as he works the lock.
The Legonater Posted June 24, 2015 Posted June 24, 2015 I ponder upon the details of the vision, stumbling back in pain. I stay concentrated, ignoring the sensation of metal clamping around my hands. Melville's tortured Jules something fierce. He's been adamant on keeping Jules alive, for whatever comfort that is. All Melville's gotten is a name. He survived on the tenants of the Cold Circle - er, anguish, despair, agony - and though Melville had taken the name from him, Jules was, Jules was brilliant. He scattered the key, the key to the name, slowly spreading it one at a time. Jules couldn't access the name directly, but his fragments of memory - his memory was the key. I come back to my senses, clearing my head of the horrors I had seen. I don't know if that helps at all, but it's what I witnessed.
CMP Posted June 24, 2015 Author Posted June 24, 2015  I'm sitting here building the next set I need before realizing I don't even need it yet. Sorry. Hoke races the letters through his head quickly, and is struck by a possible solution. NEPHALIM (NEPHILAM) The lock doesn't appear to be budging. <'I imagine the order is important. Minus mine. That probably should've come a bit earlier. Melville has a knack for foreboding passwords. I don't think you know her quite yet. Jules...does.>' Omen didn't look particularly snarky for once as Hoke fiddled with the lock. "I don't have the slightest clue who Jules is talking about. I've shipped things to hundreds of clients over the years."

UsernameMDM Posted June 24, 2015 Posted June 24, 2015 (edited) Hoke tries again: MALPHIEN Edited June 25, 2015 by UsernameMDM
UsernameMDM Posted June 24, 2015 Posted June 24, 2015 Hoke nods at the assassin's suggestion. "Anyone else?"
JimBee Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 OOC: Pie, you forgot a few things with stats. Guts used some consumables I think and gave Hybros 3 Grand Tonics, Thalion used a Nostrum and Em used an Earthwyrm Fang. Also there are two spots in my inventory for Feathers of White. I think I should have four total. Hoke nods at the assassin's suggestion. "Anyone else?" Hybros shakes his head, and continues to glance between the combination lock and the door. He was anticipating to see what was inside with a worried look on his face. He had faced many trials in this fortress. "The last time that I was here, and we entered the final door, the course of history was changed. We let Reno Bonaparte go that day." He cast a sideways glance at Guts, but quickly returned his gaze to the door. He knew that he and Eric had slain Reno some time ago, but wondered if Guts knew the truth about the late renegade admiral. "I believe I made the right decision that day, and I plan on doing the same thing today. Melville is going to die and we are going to save Jules, no matter what it takes." He paused to look at Illdria. "When we leave this place I am never looking back."
Emjajoas Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 "Looking back is a mistake," Mortimer mutters. "Keep moving forward. Leave regrets in your wake." The words sounded like an echo, as if the Warden repeated them often-- probably to himself.
Myrddyn Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 "Maybe 'Imalphen'?" Erik says, lowering his axe disappointedly. "I've never heard of anyone with that name, but then I've never heard of anyone named Maliphen or Malphien either."
CMP Posted June 25, 2015 Author Posted June 25, 2015 Hoke should be level 52.2 I believe, if he started the last fight at 51.6. Does that factor in the XP from the kitchen puzzle? No, the Medal only works in battles. OOC: Pie, you forgot a few things with stats. Guts used some consumables I think and gave Hybros 3 Grand Tonics, Thalion used a Nostrum and Em used an Earthwyrm Fang. Also there are two spots in my inventory for Feathers of White. I think I should have four total. Hybros shakes his head, and continues to glance between the combination lock and the door. He paused to look at Illdria. "When we leave this place I am never looking back." I think I accounted for all of that...are you looking at older stats? I fixed the Feathers thing. "That's the plan." Hoke tries again: MALPHIEN Hoke shifts the last letter into place, and the door clicks unlocked. Omen's hair is standing up on end as he rubs up against the door, and Illdria moves past Hoke and grabs the handle. Instantly, the world blackens and the warps in the eyes of the heroes, a disturbingly familiar sensation. But their perspective is...different. Once bound to the table, experiencing the memories of another, this time they felt as though their minds were dragged into place by some other power, to observe something...else. The voice that echoes in their minds is much like Omen's - but colder, quieter, yet overwhelming many thoughts with his message. '<It appears warnings are lost on you, heroes. This was not unanticipated. But know even as your crass leaders toy with the bounds of mortality, your every action is a disgrace to the natural forces that have shaped this world. You claim heroism and the enforcement of what you perceive as 'right' even as you twist and warp the only true laws of this world: the forces that shape us. Life...and death. We let these forces permeate us. We are their agents. You have drawn the gaze of gods and demon lords, those that aspire to the titles, those would slay them all and proclaim mortal dominance over all the world. Know that you have also drawn our attention. Know that it is a mistake. You will follow us. You will attempt to destroy us. Know that when you do, you destroy the natural bounds of our world, and threaten the frailty of laws on which this plane was founded upon. I have given you these memories that you might know the name of the one who enforces these laws, who embodies their worship. And that you might see what happens when one betrays this natural order. Melville hoped for an unwilling servant...to control this one when his machinations became dire. But we do not tolerate traitors. Follow us. Do as will. Kaldr Hringr will persist. You will cease.>' The heroes are returned to reality just in time to see Illdria throws open the door to Melville's laboratory. It smells strongly of death, and the blood for the most part has been dry for hours. Jules' eyes have been quite violently removed. It appears he bled out some time ago. Illdria exhales in shock, her face completely slack in horror. If he's surprised at all, Omen doesn't show it, sharp eyes staring up at Jules briefly before averting them.
UsernameMDM Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 (edited) Hoke checks the barrel/crate with the sword and the nearby bench. "I guess we have different definitions on 'Natural Order'," Hoke mutters to himself as he takes in the scene. Hoke looks at the body and the damage done to it. "Who exactly was he captain?" Hoke asks, hoping to get more insight on what was transpiring,"And who is MALPHIEN?" he asks to no one in particular. Edited June 25, 2015 by UsernameMDM
Emjajoas Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 The Warden's gaze is instantly drawn to Jules' face. However, Mortimer looks away quickly, his visage paling visibly, his left hand cupping his eyepatch, fingernails digging into his forehead. "By the Gods," he mutters, his voice thick. "I'm sorry, Captain." He breathes deeply for a few moments before turning his attention to the scene again. He quickly walks up to the torture table and cuts Jules' loose, searching on and under the table for anything important.
The Legonater Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 This was Jules. Morosely, I trace the familiar lines of his wounds. I had barely met him, yet feel strangely connected to the bled-out man. After a moment, I stand. That seagull. That was Soonavask, er, Melville's familiar. I suppose it was less allied than Melville thought. What about you, Omen? What's your role in all this?
JimBee Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 I think I accounted for all of that...are you looking at older stats? I fixed the Feathers thing. I think Guts' stats are the only one not updated, then. The Grand Tonics are still in his inventory and he should be Lucky/Hastened/Encouraged. Hybros looks away from the sight, cringing in disgust. He had dealt with death and killed others before, but no one deserved this kind of torture. He furrowed his eyebrows in anger. "I will kill that bird too. It is the one who led us here, and the one who... ehehm, pecked the wizard's eyes out." He couldn't even bear to say his name. "Agents of life and death... I will show him. He sounds like Wren, an agent of chaos. If these forces are so natural, then why do they need agents?" He shook his head and stared at the ground some more, rubbing his head and still in shock. "And who is MALPHIEN?" he asks to no one in particular. "I am assuming it is the one that the bird spoke of, the one who keeps the order of life and death. A made up deity for made up beliefs." He turned to Illdria, and tried comforting her by laying on hand on her forearm. "Captain. We must go. There is nothing we can do for him now. We will return to the Magpie and figure out a way to get Zaises back."
-obelix- Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 He turned to Illdria, and tried comforting her by laying on hand on her forearm. "Captain. We must go. There is nothing we can do for him now. We will return to the Magpie and figure out a way to get Zaises back." Thalion stood silently over the Jules' body with a sad look on his face. He didn't like Jules, but nobody deserved to die like that. Maybe there was still something Guts or Hybros could do... After a few moments, he remembered something and looked at Omen, without saying a word, his face returned to normal. Than he turned to Hybros, "I agree. We should focus on what we can do and look for a way to save Zaises as fast as possible."
CMP Posted June 25, 2015 Author Posted June 25, 2015 Guts quickly checks the body and the syringe. Jules is completely dead. Guts begins an alchemical analysis on the syringe. It appears to be some sort of concentrated sedative - one to impair thoughts and judgment, but not to dull pain. Hoke checks the barrel/crate with the sword and the nearby bench. The barrel has a short sword stuck into it, and it appears to be full of nearly-dead embers. Judging by a series of burns on Jules' side, it was another torture implement used by Melville, along with several others on the bench. '<The Circle necromancers insist prolonging their own lives is justified because of what they do for the Lady Frostheart. When it comes to others...they see it as an insult. That includes your Norn relic. Malphien is a..important figure in the Circle.>' "He was...he told me about the necromancy up-front. Didn't hide anything, but...spared the details of all this. I know a lot of good people whose past chased them for the rest of their lives. I didn't want to see someone who just wanted some peace fall prey to that. I let him on the crew. Did what he thought was right...even if he was wrong." She closes her eyes and shakes her head. "I don't give a damn what he did before he joined the crew. He didn't deserve this." The Warden's gaze is instantly drawn to Jules' face. "I was probably too optimistic in thinking we'd...get him out of here." There's nothing but dried blood both on and under the table. This was Jules. Omen stared at the body once more before blinking up at Dyric and idly curling up by Jules' feet one last time. '<I see a lot of birds in my future.>' He turned to Illdria, and tried comforting her by laying on hand on her forearm. "Captain. We should focus on what we can do and look for a way to save Zaises as fast as possible." "...Yeah. There's nothing we can do here. We need to just-...." Illdria shook her head, looking determined once more. "We need to get the rest of my crew back together, blow the armored-up piece of shit out of the water, and make damn sure its captain goes down with it.." The party turned to leave - but Omen suddenly unfurled from his place and skittered over to Jules' hand, the typically bemusement back in his 'voice'. '<Heh, wait just a moment, heroes. My master gave us the key, but I think I've found the name the Circle is looking for.>' The old cat pawed at Jule's hand, hanging from over the edge of the table loosely, his clenched fingers unfurling. It seems Jules had carved something into his hand with one broken fingernail: a short code: EB08. "..I think I-...wasn't this...'soul person' supposed to be a client of mine? I keep records of all our contracts, this looks like the reference code for one of them. Assuming the Bonies haven't entirely trashed my cabin, we'll know exactly who the Circle needed. Who they killed Jules over..." Illdria frowned intently. "I'll have to have a look. Right after the Apocalypse is in pieces." The party heads back downstairs for the last time. The Magpie has been cleaned of all debris and corpses, and it looks like Melvin and Knife-Tongue have hoisted up some new sails. "Cap'n! She's in the best shape she can be...at the moment. Considerin' what the Bonies did to her." The dwarf pauses. "Cap'n, I think yer missing one...where's that ninja lady?" '<Gone, I thinks. Lost her spine somewhere along the way? Heheh, can't blame her!>' "Figures. Well, she handled herself against that...Kjorfalneire, and there's nobody left in this fort who's a threat. She and the Bonies'll leave eventually, I can't imagine this is the only boat out of here. We need to go. Melvin, was the cache undisturbed?" The dwarf hands over a sleek wooden case. Illdria pops it open and pulls out a pair of weapons, sheathing both. Balanced Rapier (WP: 20, ignores defense, secondary weapons also ignore defense, longsword, suitable only for marauders) Balanced Main-gauche (WP: 10, Riposte has a 1/6 chance of instantly killing the/each target, dagger, suitable only for marauders) She then consumes a Nostrum, Mead, and Smelling Salts, and takes the helm. The Apocalypse is gone - likely already in flight. Their exit is clear. "If you've got any preparations to make, do it now. I've got an idea in mind, but it involves a lot of relying on luck, and there's a solid chance that ship is crawling with Bonapartes, the undead, and who the hell knows what else. And we're going to be in the thick of it all." Myrddyn Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 Erik raised his weapon as he entered the laboratory, and emerged in silence, his shoulders slumped but his axe still held ready to swing. "If you've got any preparations to make, do it now. I've got an idea in mind, but it involves a lot of relying on luck, and there's a solid chance that ship is crawling with Bonapartes, the undead, and who the hell knows what else. And we're going to be in the thick of it all." "I'm ready. If your plan needs a distraction, Hoke could fly out on his dragon, and I could try magically flying someone over."
UsernameMDM Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 (edited) As the party lays out plans for attack, Hoke gazes upon the eyeless corpse. He looks over the cuts, burns, gouges, and finally, the blank, empty sockets where Jules's eyes once were. "Natural order," he again mutters to himself. As he continues to take in the scene, the same whispering voice creeps into his ear and snakes its way into his mind. This was the first time Hoke let it in. And that's all it needed. Hoke reaches for the small pouch tied around his neck. He empties the contents, a small orb colored with swirly black ink, Zoot's Plaything. Clenching the small orb in is his left hand, he removes his right glove and places the orb in his naked hand. He lets down the mental barrier he has held so long against the orb and lets it into his mind. He is suddenly overtaken with visions and he cannot control. Fear Pain Anger Chaos Death He comes to himself, barely able to keep his footing as his knees buckle under a sudden overwhelming dizziness as a malevolent cackle echos distantly in his ear. He looks down at this palm and sees the orb sitting there, a bit of its inkiness bleeding out onto his hand. "Use me," he hears. He closes his eyes and concentrates on the orb, feeling a quick sharp stab of pain that fades almost as quickly as he feels it. He opens his eyes to see a wickedly tipped spear, gleaming black like a starlit midnight sky. Almost on instinct, he reaches into his pouch and produces something wrapped in a dingy cloth. He unwraps the fleshly piece of meat, and Torc hisses. He then lowers the spear and skewers the Hyrda's Tongue down the length of the spear. The tongue gives up its gift as greenish acidic poison bleeds all over the spear which it greedily drinks in. He tosses the spent tongue on the floor with Torc promptly devours with a glob of molten fire. "Natural order," Hoke says again. He silently prepares for the coming battle. Hoke uses: Zoot's Plaything - Zoot's Order (WP: 39, 3 Poison, -1 SP to enemies) Hydra Tongue Mead Nostrum Smelling Salt Hoke's inventory has 2 Feathers of Flight listed separately. Should he only have 1 or 2? Edited June 27, 2015 by UsernameMDM
